空の軌跡 // Trails in the Sky ⚔ Story Club・Week 11

Week 11 16th September 2024
Last Week Week 10
Next week Week 12
Home Thread 空の軌跡

We’re going to stop just outside the door of the person you want to talk to. The door is marked with an ! when you approach so you don’t need to worry about accidentally going inside. There should be nine main quest bullet points in your 手帳.

You may or may not have noticed chapters 1&2 of the hidden book available for sale in the market, those are the only chapters you can buy. All the other chapters are missable.

Side Quests
  • 山道の魔獣探索
  • 食材の収集
  • 東ボース街道の手配魔獣

All three can be done this week, though it’s fine to leave 食材の収集 for next week if you don’t have what need / don’t want to backtrack.

If you’re looking for books, a hidden one is now available somewhere. Specifically, talk to マルコ at ハーケン門, he’s in the bar. Go back in and talk to him after the blonde guy follows you out.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. Do any of the new NPCs stand out to you?

  5. What are your impressions of Bose’s Mayor?

  6. How do you think the whole pretend we’re not bracers plan is going to go?

Spoilers

N-level grammar stuff is pretty arbitrary, but hey, double N1 grammar points in this one sentence! Good practice if anyone is aiming for that stuff, and a nice reminder that we’re doing some very real Japanese reading here.

I have no idea how, but I kept missing the restaurant, which is just right there, when looking for it for the side quest.

The scorpions gave me my first game over by ganging up on Estelle really fast, and me spending some actions on crafts that did no damage, but on retry I unloaded the arts from the start and beat them. The other monster was the opposite experience, between the break abilities and Joshua’s craft to delay turns, it never got one move off. Also I found birds quite easy to get the back hit on to start the battle, so I fought all of them on the way for some free experience and items.

Pretty good vibes out of the mayor. Right before meeting her I talked to someone in the market who was talking about how their business partner (maybe relative or something too, I forget) was raising prices too high, so that was neat. The guy we meet at the border… well, everyone wants a piece of Joshua, huh? :skull: That aside, I was amused when he tried to join them and liked the dynamic he brought. Looking forward to seeing more.

There is no way they aren’t spotted as guild members, right? Either they get called out frame 1 or he is going to sense it and pretend to not know while outright misdirecting them, that’s my guess

Week 11 main story

The formal speech that the mayor’s butler and リラ the maid use made my head hurt. A hard reminder to do more studies on formal language :smiling_face_with_tear:

Maybell (I think that’s the romanized version?) seems more like a benevolent feudal lord than a mayor. Much more than the friendly, laid-back mayor of Rolent or even the old guy in the tiny village near Bose. The way she wants to undermine the army’s authority, and indirectly her queen’s, is kind of wild. I like her for it! Her situation also made me curious about what the title of mayor means outside of democracy, and I fell into a Wikipedia rabbit hole about the history of mayors. That’s normal, right?

The conversation with blondie was a bit awkward. Joshua can’t just rest, can he? Like @Daisoujou I enjoyed when he tried to casually tag along with the group, though.

On their identities being revealed: My money’s on them getting caught. It’d just be more fun that way

I just got the delay move for Joshua and it’s my new favorite thing. More turn order manipulation moves, please!

I chose to believe that he speaks literally and just sniffs people like a freak.

Summary

For me the most difficult was blonde guy’s flowery prose, I had to do a bunch of kanji lookups…

The guard at the entrance said to go straight for the general but of course I explored the rest of the fort first and there is a forbidding jail in the basement…
