Ruri Dragon 🐲 Week 10

p123

She’s saying “Let’s act like high school girls”

Oh, because they are not? What age do we think they are? I don’t remember that they mention the school year, maybe there was an indication when they talked about Ruri entering school?

p123

They are JKs, it’s the same feeling when you tell someone to act like an adult finally. Or like “Let’s do like high school girls do”.

p123

If it helps, you could think of it like ‘We’re high school girls, so let’s act like it!’. That’s more of a vibes translation than a direct one, but that’s the gist of it

Together | do JK (do things a high school girl would do) [imperative volitional form, would normally be JKやる] | emphasis
Let’s act more like high schoolers!

p123

I don’t think it’s like that, and it’s just a happy “Let’s do some high school girls things!!

So it’s not like they are not acting like high school girls already in general, but she’s just happy to do some extra stereotypical Japanese high school girl things now.

That’s the way I meant it, it’s just hard to put into words.

small correction

Just a nitpicky thing here because I don’t want someone to go searching for something wrong, it’s the volitional form here, not imperative. It’s a bit confusing because saying “let’s ” does seem like a command but this is a special case kind of command that gets its own name called volitional.

Ah thanks. I knew I shouldn’t drive into grammar making things, I never remember the terminology. Vibes based translation all the way

Trying to cram the rest of the chapter tonight since I haven’t really had time this week. Having trouble with a certain line. Any help is much appreciated.

Page 120

Here’s my understanding. I’ll say I’m not 100% on this line as well so if anyone else wants to jump in be my guest.

p120

One thing to note for this is that とこ is a slang form of ところ, which should help.

[the context is] [my] first impression is | stuff like your persistence(?) <— || and stuff like the strong look in your eyes
That’s right. [I’m not great with your type of personality either, because of] my first impression [of your personality], which is stuff like being determined/persistant and having a strong sense of purpose (lit ‘strong eyes’)

I think the そういう is in response to the そうだった…

I thiiiiiiiink that’s what she means, anyway. I’m really not sure I have the right 決める meaning down, but eh.

I currently have 決まる and 決める as leeches, because I can never remember which is “to be decided” and “to decide.” I probably just need to come up with a mnemonic for it in my own head at some point. :frowning:

That’s something you can easily get with exposure to them so I wouldn’t worry about them being leeches.

Page 120

I think the first とこ is the whole そういう第一印象で決める. So: “Like how you decide by the first look”. Probably refering to a few panels earlier when Ruri said she initially misjudged her because of her hair color.

So, something like “Like how you judge people by your first impression, or how your eyes convey strong emotions.”

(I just checked how a fan translation handled the later part, and they used “glare at people”, which I kinda like.)

that makes more sense to how I intuit the use of で particle clauses. Gah, the nesting in jpn drives me crazy sometimes

Thanks. The とことか just kinda melts together in my head but I’ll have to get used to it.

I somehow managed to cram translations for the entire chapter over yesterday and today. I’d rather not do that again. It’s kinda weird seeing something like Starbucks show up in a manga. It grounds the story quite a bit. Not a big fan of Ruri’s new friend but we’ll see how it goes. Not that there’s much of this series left, sadly. :sob:

Chapter 4: Starbucks is Scary

Pages 112-115

Ruri: I don’t understand the whole lesson.

Yuka: There’s a one week gap.

Ruri: Everybody in class understands it, right?

Ruri: It’s painful because it seems like I’m the only one who was left behind…

Yuka: I know, I also have that experience.

Ruri: Ah, Yuka, help me.

Yuka: I’m doing the best I can to keep up with you.

Yuka: Why don’t you get someone around here to teach you?

Yuka: Look, this place is full of good people like Yoshioka. I’m certain he’s intelligent.

Yuka: You’re not on goods terms?

Ruri: Someone like Yoshioka talks to me excessively, but…

Ruri: Honestly, it’s hard for me to talk with boys.

Yuka: What about that Kashiro next to you? The one with the pigtails?

Ruri: Her two-coloured pigtails are very threatening, don’t you think?

Ruri: She’s so cheery, it’s scary.

Yuka: That’s prejudiced. Cheery people aren’t particularly scary.

Ruri: I mean, Kashiro said it.

Yuka: You didn’t learn her name yet!?

Ruri: I’m not very good at…remembering people’s names.

Yuka: Ahh…it can’t be helped anymore.

Yuka: I’ve taken notes, so make sure to pull through somehow next time.

Ruri: [I don’t know from the look of the notes. What do I do?]

Ruri: [Why is high school so severe?]

Ruri: [I was only absent for a week and I came to speak a language nobody understands.]

Ruri: [Following the dragon, it’s Urashima Taro or me.]

Pages 116-119

Kashiro: You don’t understand because you had a week’s absence, right?

Kashiro: Are you alright? I can teach you.

Ruri: No…somehow…

Ruri: …I’ll do my best by myself.

Kashiro: Oh? Are you alright? I don’t know, you know?

Kashiro: Ahahaha!! You’re sinking a ship…

Kashiro: You’re being strangely stubborn…

Kashiro: It’s no good if it’s impossible, Ruri.

Kashiro: You’re not that smart, right?

Kashiro: Ah, sorry. I meant more than me.

Kashiro: That’s a serious comeback, isn’t it?

Kashiro: When it’s like this, borrow strength from people.

Kashiro: Hey, I’ll lend you some.

Kashiro: Last week, you did the cosine theorem, right?

Kashiro: This is the continuation of it, here’s what we did until yesterday, it’s not very different.

Kashiro: I’ll give you a light explanation, hm? First of all…

Kashiro: Right, this is everything. Do you understand?

Ruri: Perhaps, you’re extremely smart…!?

Pages 120-123

Ruri: Sorry, I was thinking that you weren’t able to study very much for a long time. Due to your hair colour.

Kashiro: Ahaha! Doesn’t that seem stupid? Cruel.

Ruri: I…it’s not like that. But, honestly, I’m not very good with people who are intense.

Kashiro: I’m also not very good at dealing with you.

Ruri: Is that so?

Kashiro: Like how you judge people based on first impressions and the way you look at people.

Ruri: Even though you were coming to talk to me…

Kashiro: You’re hard to deal with, but I don’t dislike you.

Kashiro: Since you’re cute.

Kashiro: If you talk to someone and see that it’s easier to deal with, that’s good.

Kashiro: It’s hard to deal with, but all you have to do is get on good terms with them and they won’t become your enemy, right?

Kashiro: I don’t like not being very good at it, you know?

Kashiro: I want to be friends with you since I’m next to you.

Kashiro: So, Ruri, we’ll talk more.

Kashiro: It’s alright if you’re bad at it.

Kashiro: Besides, those horns are really cute!

Kashiro: I really like them!!

Kashiro: There’s a study meeting after school today.

Kashiro: You’re not part of any extracurricular activities, right?

Kashiro: That’s perfect, isn’t it!? Starbucks came out with a new drink!

Kashiro: Let’s do high school girl things together!

Ruri: …and that’s what she said.

Yuka: Oh, that’s good, right?

Ruri: Yuka, save me from that place.

Pages 124-127

Yuka: You’re making things worse again…

Yuka: …it’s not a particularly scary place.

Ruri: It’s when I went before…!

Ruri: Everybody was playing with their computers and it was scary.

Ruri: Everyone seemed very smartly dressed…

Ruri: …and I was in ordinary clothes which was embarrasing!?

Yuka: You care too much about people’s appearance…

Ruri: Please, Yuka, come with me.

Ruri: Let’s go to the study meeting together!?

Yuka: I can’t today because I have a committee meeting.

Yuka: You were saying it before, right?

Yuka: You want to try and drink a Frappe.

Yuka: You really want to go, right…?

Yuka: Go and have fun!

Ruri: The photo of…Miyashita? And…

Mikura: I’m Mikura!

Kashiro: Two more people came to help out!

Kashiro: Shall we make our orders?

Kashiro: Don’t worry about it.

Kashiro: Good! I’ll get it.

Ruri: No, I’ll do it by myself!

Starbucks Guy: Sorry to keep you waiting. Melon Frappuc…uh, horns…

Pages 128-130

Ruri: Hey everyone, is it a okay for a moment…?

What’s funny is I just saw Starbucks in the Komi Can’t Communicate book club as well.

全然 modifies the verb (it’s an adverb), not the noun. She doesn’t understand the lesson at all.

Nothing here says “you”. She actually means the class. Or like “keep up” in general.
“I’m doing my best to keep up”

It’s not that she’s certain, since in English that kinda gives the vibe that she has no idea but he probably is smart. Instead “He is certainly smart” is a better translation here.

This is said by Ruri, notice the missing tail on the bubble.

Wouldn’t make sense with the next line. This says “So she’s called Kashiro-san”

ノート見ても is “even looking at the notes”. “Even looking at the notes, I don’t understand”

Subject is “みんな”, since that’s what が attaches to. Therefore the “everyone” is doing the “わからない言語で喋る” part of the sentence.
Breaking that down, it starts off with a modified noun:
わからない言語 → a language [I] don’t understand
So everyone is talking in a language she doesn’t understand.
And the “ようになった” part is basically “it’s like”.
So put together “I’ve only been absent for a week, and now everyone seems like they speak a language I don’t understand”.

龍の次は → after [becoming] a dragon
浦島太郎かわたしは → did I turn into Urashima Taro? (I don’t know much about this, but the important part is that the guy went for let’s say an extended vacation and came back quite a bit later)

p116-119

“It’s hard coming back, isn’t it?”

p120-123

話してみて is 話す+てみる or “try to talk”. “If you talk to someone and it eases the difficulty, that’s great” or something along those lines.

p124-127

She cares to much about what others think.

Went a bit light on the help after the first section. Partly because I’ve felt that even if it wasn’t like entirely correct, they are close enough to chalk them up as translation difficulties, and partly because I myself have no clue about how you could make them sound more natural or more accurate.

I’m not ‘worried’ about it. I’m annoyed that my getting words crossed in my brain isn’t unique to English (my native language.)
