Studying Japanese has really made me aware of this sort of thing. I work at a hospital and hear all sorts of weird (english) dialects and slang, and it makes me wonder if some of these older patients who do not have english as a native language even understand the nurses.

Could someone help break down this sentence for me? I’m mostly confused by how なんか is being used. It doesn’t seem to fit the “something like” meaning so does it somehow translate to “why”?
なんか can act as a sort of softener, which is useful, when you tell your friend that they look horrible
“Hori… your face looks awful… are you alright?”

Sorry to drop by a thousand years later but I don’t understand this handwritten sentence at the bottom right of p.17. I just recognize 見る, こと and ない at the end, and some particles. The other words doesn’t make sense to me put together…

Would it help to know that 由紀 and 貴子 are the names of two of Hori’s friends? Yuki and Takako, respectively.
Not recognizing names still trips me up at times. See the second tabof the Vocab list linked in the first post, when it doubt. It has the kanji names for all characters appearing in the volume.
