ドラゴンボールSD (Dragon Ball SD) · Volume 2 Discussion 🐉

I just caught up (yay!). And I was going to say the same, I fell so smart that I basically could read through the whole chapter and knew almost every word.

I am looking forward to reading these chapters because I basically don’t remember anything about the Red Ribbon

You changed your avatar - I didn’t recognise you for a second! I agree it’s nice being able to read this fairly easily and primarily enjoy the manga rather than it being hard work. I don’t know about knowing nearly every word - I looked up about 40 when I went back and read for the second time. But I understand enough that most of the time I don’t know a word I can take a reasonable guess from the context.

I did like the word 忍法 in this chapter - ninja arts!

Ha! I changed my avatar, so I could be a character like everyone else (I am “Terry” from Toriko).

I mean I still had to look up lots of words, but by comparison was “nearly” every word . I think the difference is that it was the first chapter I was able to read from beginning to end and fully understand what was going on, then I went back to get nuance and specific vocabulary. Definitely feels like an evolution!

And I’m glad we are keeping up with this club!

So, the SD manga still surprises by going much quicker… they totally skipped the beginning of the tower and a bunch of silly moves by the ninja.

Also, this chapter stripped away my “arrogance” from last week, thinking that I could understand everything. On the first 2 pages there was already so much vocabulary that I didn’t know :frowning:.

About the joke page in-between chapters…

Summary

Is that the creator of the android from DBZ? Since they were created by the Red Ribbon anyway?

Me too, I’ve been enjoying it a lot

I know right, they teased Major Metallitron and then completely skip him, lol. Though it does seem like they use the inter-chapter jokes a lot to give a nod to the storylines or characters they have cut out, so maybe I should have seen the writing on the wall with Metallitron

On a different note, I am not sure who fills in the vocab list, but it’s uncanny how close their vocab level is to mine. I rarely have to look up something that isn’t already there, and there is hardly ever something in there I already knew

I think it’s Micki who fills out the spreadsheet? I was also doing it on volume 1, but when I fell behind I stopped for a bit in volume 2.

I also find it very similar to my level, which i great!

I am all caught up with this week’s chapter for once! I am going to re-read it and see if there are any questions, it’s been a while since I posted Any

By the way, I am curious on what everybody’s level is in Japanese, since we are such a small group?

I’ve been using Bunpro and Genki/Tobira for grammar. Currently halfway through N3. For vocab I am using the ‘badger’ books and I am halfway through N3 there as well. For kanji I use the Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course, currently at 1400 kanji. I’ve recently picked up listening practice so I can do the Wanikani mock N4 and N3 in July. As for speaking… absolutely zero experience lol. I am too scared and overwhelmed by all the choice to try iTalki

Ahhh that’s why we’re similar

I’m also halfway through N3 on Bunpro and study books and feel my overall level for grammar and vocabulary is somewhere between N3 and (very low) N2… I know some advanced things, but then I don’t know some of the more basics from N3.

For listening, I watch anime, but I started listening to the audio books on repeat for the books I am reading (e.g: convenience store woman). I am using the hyperpolyglots techniques of listening to the same thing over and over again.

My speaking is also somewhere N3-ish, I’ve been able to continue my classes 95%+ in Japanese only (though very often I have to reduce to speak like a child (or Tarzan) to be able to communicate. I’d say definitely get on italki, find whatever teacher and if you don’t like them, dump them and start with a new one. It’s better to find a teacher that fits your style of learning. If you want, I can send my teacher’s profile on DM, I really like her and the classes are very informal. In the beginning it was painful to even complete a sentence, but after a couple of months things get much easier!

It’s great finding people at a similar level and with a similar interest in reading this manga! I’m probably around mid N3 level for grammar and vocab. Hitting level 60 tonight in my kanji learning so my kanji knowledge is more around N1!

All my grammar learning the last couple of years since finishing Genki 1 has been from looking things up online as I came across them in bookclub. I’ve been working through Genki 2 the last few months and finding that I know most of what is in there already, although the consolidation has been nice.

I’ve been filling in the vocab sheet, glad it’s been helpful. I’ve also been putting some of the words into my anki deck, especially ones that look like they might come up again in the manga. なまいき is my favourite from the last few weeks!

I’ve deliberately got a week ahead just to give myself a bit more leeway when we start reading the next volume of シメジシミュレーション next week.

Page 107 - I couldn’t see why Android 18 was so annoyed at ハッチャン suggesting her name could be ジュウハッチャン. I couldn’t see an obvious pun, perhaps she just doesn’t like him changing her name, but maybe someone else saw a pun in there?

I’d love to have a recommendation! But I think the DM functionality is turned off, due to some bad stuff happening in the past?

@Micki, thanks for filling in the vocab spreadsheet! :pray:t2: And congratulations on hitting level 60, it’s quite the achievement!

@Micki Congratulations on your level 60! That’s a beautiful golden badge you have there!

Have you thought about trying some of the intermediate book club books? I am still finding them a little hard for a mid-N3 grammar level, but they are slowly getting easier and I am finding that I come across lots of Kanji to practice readings and acquire new vocabulary.

For grammar I’ve been finding useful learning the patterns “in the wild” (via manga or books) and adding them to Bunpro. This way I learn them in context and keep practicing it so I don’t forget.

@Phryne: My teacher’s profile is the following: Learn japanese with Kara - An japanese tutor from italki
She’s kind and patient. I just do conversation with her and she corrects my Japanese on the chat is quite helpful. Either, if she’s not a match for you, find someone who is it’s been super helpful in improving my Japanese learning!

I felt so dumb that I only got the ハッチャン name at the end of the chapter!

As for the joke If you are familiar with DBZ, number 18 has a very “serious” personality, she’s rarely smiling or in a good mood. So I think she was just “angry” at the suggestion of being called a cutesy name… like “Don’t you dare call me that cutesy girly name!” Anyway, that’s how I took it when I read the chapter

About the end of chapter character I forgot its name but is was another monster cut off from the SD version, before finding the final boss Goku and 8-chan fight him for 2 chapters or so

He’s Buyon, The Jiggler! It’s a shame he gets left out, his defeat is Goku’s smartest moment so far!

I can tell my reading speed has been going up. It helps that we don’t get Master Roshi anymore, his style really tripped me up.

I am not sure what to make of なまいきいいおってガキのくせに on page 108, mostly the いいおって bit.

Not sure about なまいきいいおってガキのくせに sorry.

Second panel on page 126, there’s a hidden joke here. In the original manga she didn’t have a submarine because she had brought her father’s capsule case by mistake. When she opened the capsule in her father’s case it was full of pornography!

Favourite panel this week:

I think it could be a contraction of 言いやがって, as per this:【~しおって what does it mean】 は 日本語 で何と言いますか? | HiNative
