スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり・Behind the Supermarket, Smoking With You 🚬 (Beginner Book Club) - Reading Volume 3

I had written some numbers earlier but I believe they were wrong. I fixed my script and now I’m pretty sure the numbers are correct. It looks like this:

Title Chapter Characters

So pretty evenly distributed.
I personally like the plan

Edit:
It might be hard to have an idea of what the numbers mean if you have nothing to compare them to, so here is another example with the first volume of Yotsubato!

Title Chapter Characters
よつばと!01 1 5142
よつばと!01 2 1456
よつばと!01 3 1653
よつばと!01 4 1437
よつばと!01 5 1371
よつばと!01 6 1289
よつばと!01 7 1408

スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり has more chapters but about the same amount of characters, so I think that confirms that the pace should be fine

I still didn’t finish reading ロジカとラッカセイ but apparently once you get a taste of these book clubs, it’s hard not to join them

I’ll finish ロジカとラッカセイ this week and get all ready for this book club!

Hi everyone, I found yesterday about this club and will be reading with you all! @javerend thank you for the suggestion, it is definitely the type of story I like!

I’m not sure if I’m early or late but I managed to finish the first chapter.

@eagleflo and whoever else contributed to it, thank you for the spreadsheet. It was absurdly useful. Would have taken twice as much if I had been looking for those words by myself. If similar spreadsheets will be available for the next chapters, two chapters per week is definitely doable.

P.S. I already love 田山さん. I’m also happy the author decided to make it clear since the first chapter.

You’re early; the club will start in a week and two days:

Once it starts, a thread to talk about the first week’s content (the first chapter) will be made.

It looks like Gigguk, one of the big anime / manga YouTubers has made an entire video about ヤニ吸う!

til that Gigguk blocks Japan :smiling_face_with_tear:

Only one week for us to (officially) begin reading now  I will post a reminder in the main thread of the BBC by then as well

Added chapter 3 to the vocabulary sheet. Removed some repeats this time but tried to keep it as approachable as I could.

I’m certain there will be people who will fall in love with this and want to binge, so I’ll try to keep ahead.

Nice! I just learned 裏 on Wanikani today, so now that I can officially understand and read the title I feel ready to start

Added chapter 4 to the vocabulary sheet.

(Mostly to bump this thread so that everyone surely notices that the club is starting soon!)

Thank you! I just started with the first few pages today and am already wondering if I’ll be one of them. The vocab sheet is sooo helpful. This is the first time I’m having a halfway satisfying reading experience with any manga I’ve tried.

I’m really looking forward to reading this book! It’s ready to go on my Kindle. :slightly_smiling_face:

Added chapters 5, 6 & 7 to the vocabulary sheet.

There’s also one extra / omake page called 後日談ごじつだん for each chapter, placed after every two chapters. Made separate sheets for them as well. (They can be pretty hard to read since it’s completely handwritten Japanese, so feel free to check the full transcription from my website.)

Our time draws near!

And once more before the club officially starts: chapters 8, 9 and 10 plus extras have been added to the vocabulary sheet.

I'm not big on disclaimers but I'll say it this once: I've assembled these by mostly by hand and mistakes are inevitable. I'm just a level 23 and this was my first ever manga in Japanese that I've read cover to cover. I know more advanced learners are unlikely to need the vocabulary sheets to begin with, but I'd appreciate a quick glance through from someone who actually knows Japanese.

With that out of the way, let’s enjoy this one! :sunglasses: Our んははは counter starts at zero.

Thanks for the hard work so far, I (and several others, I am sure) really appreciate it :slightly_smiling_face:
I’ll have the thread for chapter 1 up in a few hours

I’ll admit I only skimmed the vocab sheet, and idk the context yet for the sentences where you found these words so there may be mistakes based on that, but at a glance it looks good! Thank you for taking the time to go through and fill out the vocab sheet!

Some feedback:

  • Yes, アホ is Kansai dialect for ばか (went ahead and removed the question mark you put there)
  • Generally we try to keep the amount of definitions for a word to a minimum and only put the relevant definition(s) for that context. This is partially to save space and partially to clarify what meaning is meant. For example in chapter 7 you have どれくらい as “how long; how far; how much”, but we’d only keep the meaning that fits in the context of the sentence you found it in. No need to go back and change things though, I’m sure we’ll narrow down the meanings as a club, it’s not a big deal just something to keep in mind for the future

The time has come, fellow Tayama enjoyers! Week 1’s thread is here. Feel free to ask any questions you have! See you there!

I’m not one of the advanced learners, but as one of the low level readers who uses it all the time I found those for chapter 1 and 2 perfect. With the occasional “wait they’ve missed this word, what does it mean?”, followed by 5 minutes of selecting radicals on jisho, only to find out the word hadn’t been skipped, it was just the second time it appeared in the same chapter. I’ve learned to trust that Excel now, all words are there.
Thank you again for all the translations! Wouldn’t be able to follow without it.

Also this is unrelated to the book club but how does one use the jisho program listed in your website? I’ve played around with a few languages in the past (Python, Java and C) but know nothing about Rust. Do I just install Rust from the official site and then run (or probably compile first) “build.rs” from the Windows command prompt?

Rust binaries

Install Rust - Rust Programming Language has a guide on how to install rustup, which in turn should install cargo and add ~/.cargo/bin to your PATH environment variable for you.

After that you can just cargo install jisho. After that jisho should be available from any terminal you spawn. (This should be the same process for any other Rust-based tooling.) I’d be interested to hear if you get it to work!

It is, thank you! The instructions made it super easy. I’m not sure what the policy on github is but I’d put the installation process even in the README.md for those of us with limited knowledge.

At first I was getting only question marks instead of kanji/kana. Enabling UTF-8 in the Control Panel (Region → Language for non-Unicode Programs) did nothing. I also tried chcp 65001 on the Console but again nothing. I finally found another code for Japanese (chcp 936 or also chcp 932) and it works! It still doesn’t look as clean as the one you have on github but I’ll find the right number eventually.

I’ll report on the program after using it some more!
