Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent spoilers. Some folks are reading JoJo for the first time and have never watched the anime either. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the volume or series than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections. For other Parts, please label the Part before the spoiler, for example “Well we know 2 [character] survives because they’re in a later Part”

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labeled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

This is an example of the “Blur Spoiler” option.

Chapter 39: 血戦! JoJo&DIO・炎と氷ジョナサンとディオ その 1 Questions
  • How does JoJo plan to defeat Dio?
  • How does Dio feel about hamon? How does what he says reveal about what he believes his status is?
  • What does JoJo do that impresses Speedwagon?

The minions in this chapter are named after members of Led Zeppelin. Here’s a Robert Plant song

Chapter 39

Wow, pretty shocking to see Dio get cut in half! And then “come back” to life! :fearful:

He plans to make some sort of opening (apparently by throwing roses) and then use Bruford’s sword to send Hamon into Dio in one instant so that Dio doesn’t have time to freeze JoJo’s blood

He thinks Hamon is absolutely disgusting and below him. He feels that he’s someone of higher status who shouldn’t be touched by it

He moves to Dio’s right side to take advantage of Dio’s new blindspot

I’m not sure how Pluck turns into courage but sure. It is interesting how they did it with blood in the anime but here the P is just put onto it over the panel

Ohh so that’s what led zeppelin has been up to lately! Good for them

Only Dio can smile with half his head lol

  • What can JoJo do with Dio’s vampire extract?
  • How does Dio compare himself to JoJo? What comparison does he draw?
  • What does JoJo believe about humanity?

There’s a wonderful figure based on the last couple of pages. I’ll try to share a pic later

Chapter 40 questions

He can eject it from his body!

Dio says he sees JoJo as a human might see a monkey. It’s like he’s said before, he considers himself to be a more advanced being than humans. (Though different species aren’t actually hierarchical)

That people can do anything as long as they have the conviction (I don’t completely agree with this but I guess it works out for JoJo ).

Chapter 40

Yep!

The way you’ve phrased this makes me feel like Dio intentionally sounds like a typical 1800s European, but now you’ve got me wondering if Araki would be aware of that viewpoint. He went to a Christian school, so I wonder if he would have read Western literature from that time.

Conviction is pretty important in the series as a whole, so you can expect it to come up more in the future. I feel like the way JoJo is is more tolerable than your average shonen protag at least

It was

It was a few chapters ago. Araki was just lazy that day (probably).

Chapter 41: 悪鬼の最後!・炎と氷ジョナサンとディオ その 3 Questions

I don’t think I paid enough attention in previous chapters, but it’s interesting that on the 5th page of the chapter Dio feels pain, which Zeppeli said before that vampires don’t feel, right?

  • What is Dio shooting out of his eyes? What does it resemble?
  • spoiler for midpoint of the chapter Why do you think JoJo cries and passes out?
  • What does Speedwagon say about the world? How does Tompetty respond?
  • What can we learn from the newspaper reports? What do they conjure about JoJo and company?
  • What does Speedwagon say he’d do for JoJo and Erina?
  • Do you think Speedwagon will ever pay his bill?
  • What do the loading crew say about their job?

Chapter 41 questions

I don’t really remember either, but I feel like Zeppeli said that about the zombies? Or maybe Dio is feeling a lot of emotional pain in the moment from being fairly thoroughly defeated.

Body fluid, which is pretty wild! It resembles a light beam.

He still has affectionate feelings for Dio so deep down is sad that he ended up having to kill him (as far as he knows). He probably passes out because of all the physical exertion all within one day, and the only thing keeping him going was the adrenaline, which is now gone.

Speedwagon says the world was just saved (because Dio was defeated). And Tompetty agrees and says that’s not an exaggeration.

JoJo and co destroyed the mask and are under suspicion by police for the mass disappearance of people from Windknights Lot, Wang Chung stole a boat the same night, and then JoJo and Erina got married! A lot of time is passing and everyone’s slowly settling back into their normal lives for now.

He says he’ll go to help them if they’re in trouble no matter when and where they are!

Doesn’t seem like it. He’s kinda bumbling and has probably completely forgotten about it :upside_down_face:

The box is extremely heavy and they don’t know anything about it, just that Wang Chung told them last night to get it onto the ship.

Ah, maybe I’m conflating the musical with it

Lol, I love the thought ngl

You could say that hamon made his blood boil :drum:

Yep, I absolutely agree

True true

Great answers on the rest :ok_hand:

Chapter 42: 恐嵐への序曲・炎と氷ジョナサンとディオ その 4 Questions
  • Right off the bat, we got bird symbolism again :eyes: For anyone who hasn’t seen the anime, what do you think this might be alluding to?
  • What does the priest realize about the chest?
  • According to himself, why has Dio appeared in this state to JoJo?
  • What does Dio say about the relationship between them? How does he describe it? What does Dio want from that relationship?

Personal thoughts
re the priest, I love that a man of god who has lost god and his symbol of that god found Dio on the ship

Will share to natively and whatnot tomorrow

Chapter 42

I thought the birds were supposed to be like Erina and JoJo? It seems like the weak bird reminds Erina of when she was bullied and felt alone as a kid, but then the other bird joins to comfort them. And that makes her cry tears of happiness that she and JoJo are together.

It’s locked from the inside!

Dio has come to realize that he respects JoJo (quite the change in opinion!) so he wants JoJo’s body for himself

He says that they have a very entwined fate where they’re more like one person than two. So he believes if he can fulfill that by obtaining JoJo’s body, he’d be able to live forever, which is interesting logic  (but maybe not wrong?)

That’s true! And the cross fell on Dio’s chest

  • What problems does Jonathan realize he’s facing?
  • What does Dio not allow Wang Chen to do? What does he say they will do?
  • What does JoJo ultimately do?
  • How does Dio react to JoJo’s actions?

Chapter 44 questions

He makes fun of her about not understanding what’s going on. It’s reminiscent of when he made fun of her when they were kids

He can’t breathe, so he’s having trouble using Hamon

He tells Wang Chen not to humiliate JoJo, and to just quickly and painlessly cut his neck

He’s able to focus the small amount of Hamon left in his body to defeat Wang Chen and also somehow manipulate him to grab onto the ship’s screw shaft

He understands that they’ll lead to the ship exploding, and he seems pretty nervous

She’s very confused about what’s going on, but she’s also very calm, and says that she will die together with JoJo

I can’t believe it!
