Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent spoilers. Some folks are reading JoJo for the first time and have never watched the anime either. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the volume or series than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections. For other Parts, please label the Part before the spoiler, for example “Well we know 2 [character] survives because they’re in a later Part”
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labeled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Comprehension questions for Chapter 6 : 過去からの手紙・過去からの手紙その1 (Participation is totally optional! Included as comprehension and discussion points)
Who is the man on the first page of the chapter? What has he done according to the narrator?
What is Jonathan’s graduation status?
How did they win according to Dio when he talks out loud?
What are JoJo’s and Dio’s majors?
What does JoJo find strange when Dio asks him to wait?
According to the sound effects (and what he says), what’s George doing a lot of?
What’s the meaning of having a high nose here?
What’s Dio’s opinion of JoJo’s major?
What does JoJo confront Dio about on the stairs? Why is Dio on the stairs rather than the butler?
What a revelation! That Dio poisoned his dad…as a 12-year-old
I was pretty pleasantly surprised to see JoJo and Dio getting along so well at the beginning, but then it’s revealed that they’re just putting on appearances, which makes more sense.
Jack the Ripper, who murdered many women in 1888.
He’s about to graduate from university!
They were able to win because of Dio and JoJo being a good combo.
JoJo is studying archeology, and Dio is studying law.
He thinks to himself about how even though it’s been 7 years since Dio was adopted, and even when they have nice conversations about how they won by working together, he doesn’t have any feelings of friendship towards him. It kinda reminds me of when they first met, when JoJo tried to brush away Dio’s antagonistic actions as misunderstandings on his part and tried to suppress his gut suspicions.
Coughing
Being proud
He’s skeptical about whether archeology can lead to making money
Dio takes up George’s medicine because it’s getting difficult for the butler to go up the stairs due to his age. JoJo confronts him because he saw Dio swap the medicine packet with something else, and also he just read a letter written by Dario before his death 7 years ago about his dying symptoms, which are the same as what his dad has been experiencing.
They totally fit them! JoJo seems pretty idealistic, so it makes sense that he chooses to study something he’s passionate about. And it also makes sense that Dio chooses to study something more “practical”, that is probably more certain to lead to a higher-paying and more prestigious line of work. Being more familiar with law could also allow him to use it to his advantage (like knowing that he’s now of legal age to be able to receive the Joestar inheritance), and also there are associations between law and power.
It’s definitely in character for Dio so I wasn’t surprised! But also it’s like wow he couldn’t wait a minute longer to get rid of George as soon as he didn’t need him anymore I feel kinda bad for George since he’s so proud of Dio and treats him completely like family (even if he wasn’t the perfect father sometimes towards JoJo, he doesn’t deserve to die)
I think it’s funny that Dio’s going for George first. Like if George died, wouldn’t Jonathan get his money first? So shouldn’t Dio go after JoJo first lol?
Yeah, like he took in an unrelated orphan, definitely not a bad guy.
Oh yeah, that’s true! Although maybe the inheritance situation is more like they would both get a share? But yeah, usually in Dio’s position it would make more sense to get rid of the other inheritors first. But I guess it’s more like he views JoJo as a rival, and would rather beat him physically/mentally than just getting rid of him, which would not be as satisfying.
Although Dio’s treated like family, he didn’t take the Joestar name and he doesn’t get the same level of reference as JoJo gets from the staff- JoJo gets the young master addon and Dio gets san.
That’s quite a good point! I wasn’t sure if he views him like that here, but I guess he did when they were kids, didn’t he?
He’s angry that Dio didn’t spend his money on getting alcohol for him instead, and he wants Dio to sell his mother’s dress and use that money for alcohol. He thinks Dio should know to focus on spending his money on alcohol, and I think it’s the “ってんだよ” that indicates this? (He feels like “I’ve already told you this”)
She died because of the hardships that Dario put her through (seems not clear what exactly, but presumably his spending habits played a part?)
He says that he once saw a person with the same moles on their ear, who lived a chaotic life but lived to 183, and implies that Dio might have a similar fate.
I was a bit confused by him saying “その薬, 今回が最後でいいよ” on p.155 by the way. He’s saying that he hopes this is the last time Dio will buy this medicine? Not really sure what he’s getting at, if anything.
He threatens that their friendship will be lost if JoJo looks into the medicine.
He really wants to protect his father and the Joestar family.
JoJo says that from the very start 7 years ago, Dio didn’t have any goodwill towards JoJo and his dad.
By the way, I feel like this scene is very reminiscent of when Dio grabbed Jojo’s wrist soon after they first met (when JoJo reached for Dio’s suitcase), except that this time JoJo is not immediately overwhelmed.
Sure but also, if he was willing to throw bottles at his own 10-11 year old son (just figuring that if Dio and JoJo are 12 in the part of the story that we see and that’s nearly a year, that Dio’s probably younger than 12 in this scene), I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw them at an adult woman as well.
I think that’s a good interpretation of it. He’s selling Dio poison and ideally the poison should kill whatever’s being poisoned at some point, right?
That’s a great callback! I never noticed it before. Thank you for sharing
I’ll be opening a new thread for the 石仮面 arc, but I’m about ready to pass out, so please forgive me. You can preview the questions here for now though.

Summary
Ah ah ah aaaaah!
The older guys use some less common pronouns. What are they and what do they imply?
Who uses a different politeness register? Can you explain why?
Where is Jonathan going and why?
How do you feel about Dio’s plan?
Why won’t the driver go the whole way?
Can you break down the meaning of 知っててきた p 179 of Tanko and the featured pic/meme?
What connection does Ogre Street have to the medicine and why does Jonathan think he might find some answers there?
I’m not in any rush and I’m guessing most others aren’t either? So I’d say please take as much time as you need especially if you’re having a rough time!
Thank you! That’s very kind of you. It’s the opposite of times being tough in this case. I had a super busy and amazing week that included seeing the Phantom Blood musical and there’s just not enough time in a day for me to get everything done lol.
