How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 5 reading, you will need one of the following:

• the original edition (OG) or refurbished edition (RE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 5 (softcover, hardcover or digital)

• the anniversary edition (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 4 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

• The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

• Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

• To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

• The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

• To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

I haven’t read Cardcaptor Sakura before, but I have had a few things spoiled for me, so I’ll be careful to keep my mouth shut.

Finished the whole chapter already. Really easy one, with no new lore dump, Kansai ben, male speech, or Kaho just saying things.

A couple sentences were a bit harder, I’ll ask about them when I am at a computer.

同じ大学で数学教えてる教授でね
いつも長い休みはその別荘ですごすんだけど今回の連休は海外んだって
で、わたしたちがお泊りしてもいいんだ

This one took me a while because the mention of 数学 made me think this was about Kaho, and then I didn’t parse ですごすんだけど correctly. But once I got it, it’s easy enough.

“A math teacher from the same university as always stag at this country house during holiday, but this time they went to the sea, so we can stay there.”

Didn’t know about this expression “うれしくてつい” to mean “to be so happy that [I messed something up / did something I didn’t mean to”. Neat !

Not sure what that 貸してもらったんです is here. Is it Sakura speaking, saying the house was lent to them ? Looks like it, but it doesn’t answer the man’s question.

Why it Sakura father so surprised that she went and meet this guy ? He sent her this way and knew the guy would be there.

Mild spoiler (but come on, we all saw it coming) and I anticipate next week but, is old man Sakura’s maternal great-grandfather, great-granduncle ? Has to be great-grandfather, right ?

I also found this section really smooth (I love you Kero, but you hurt me ). I got through it way faster than I expected.

Did anyone else get the vibe Sakura was about to be murdered when she wandered into a big empty house to search for a strange man or have I played too many mystery games?

The vibe was extremely weird indeed “hey can you try this outfit that belonged to may granddaughter ?”, but hey we’ve seen worse things in the previous volumes.

I was kinda wondering if old guy would turn out be a clow card, like “the lonely” or something

We’re watching the anime with my SO, for now we have not caught up with the book club. I wonder how different things will turn out to be.

Sakura says she came from the cottage, then when the man says he didn’t know they had a daughter Sakura’s age, she says it’s that it was lent (to her family).

Finished chapter 2 already ! Quite a cliffhanger this one, but I’ll wait to debrief it.

It feels really nice to be reading Sakura again. I know I’ll not always have the time to participate, so I’ll keep reading ahead, and go back to discuss specific points as we progress.

As folks have mentioned, there wasn’t a lot of difficult vocabulary this week, but it was a good one for grammar practice!

I didn’t previously know about the grammar structure:
Xえば + よかった

Using the example sentence:
カバン 後ろのトランクに入れとけばよかったね
(said by Yukito to Sakura)
Not knowing how this grammar structure worked, my instinct was to translate like this:
“If you put your bag in the rear trunk, it was good.”

However, this isn’t particularly grammatical in English.

It turns out that this grammar structure actually means
“If (you) did X, it would have been good/better,” or more simply “You should have done X.”

More generally, Xえば + past-tense means “If (you) did X, Y would have happened/you would have done Y/etc.” This is called the “past unreal conditional.”

In this case it would be:
“You should have put your bag in the rear trunk.” (Maybe there’s a softer way to phrase this since Yukito said it, but the meaning should be okay at least.)

Also, in this chapter I learned that よろしく isn’t only used as a greeting.
X によろしく means “to send your regards to X.” (That’s only one translation, though.)

Finished the the third chapter, this one was significantly harder.
Reading ahead kinda defeats the purpose of the book club, but those periods where I have the time and energy to read japanese come and go, so I have to make the most of it.

Hopefully it still helps to have others working towards the same goal, though, even if the pacing is off. We can still cheer you on, while eating your dust. がんばれ！

I have a similar problem with reading too fast, though. I’m reading other stuff, too, so I don’t get too tempted to jump ahead. It’s not like I perfectly understand everything, though, so maybe it’s a sign I should read more carefully? It’s kind of a tough balancing act.

Also, haha, uh, I guess Sakura knows what she’s looking for in a friendship? I didn’t even notice.

Agreed, I’m happy you’re reading and giving us updates even if you’re not reading at the same pace as us, @simboubou

@mildlyrebelliousmint This is just my biased opinion, but I think, generally speaking, when it comes to language acquisition it’s better to read more material but understand less of it than to read less and understand more of it.

It’s not like I would expect Japanese people to give me a full hour to read a restaurant menu or respond to a question – quick, “good enough” understanding is super valuable in day-to-day life.

If something comes up a lot and I feel like not knowing it is significantly hampering my understanding, that’s when I like to dig in and look it up properly – if I have the time, of course.

That’s a really good point. It will probably be a really valuable skill to develop. Plus, I do sometimes find myself picking up stuff contextually, too. I guess my brain is doing its work with the the whole pattern recognition thing.
