How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 2 reading, you will need one of the following:

• the original edition (OG) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 2 (softcover or digital)

• the refurbished edition (RE) ofカードキャプターさくら Vol 2 (hardcover or digital)

• the anniversary editions (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 1 and Vol 2 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

• The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

• Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

• To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

• The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

• To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

Week 0: Pre-Reading Period

Happy holidays, everyone! We are currently in the pre-reading period of the ABBC Offshoot: Card Captor Sakura Club.

Vol 2 reading will officially start on Jan 4th, 2025. If you want to read with the club, you’ll want to buy a copy of カードキャプターさくら vol 2 before then!

If you’re here early and can’t wait to get started, you’re welcome to read ahead! Here’s some tips for you:

• you are welcome to make notes on your own and prepare translations in advance for later weeks’ discussions

• you are also welcome to pre-fill the vocabulary sheet!

• if there’s anything you really want to discuss about what you’ve read, and it can’t wait until the official start of the club, please mark which week’s reading you’re discussing and of course, make sure to spoiler tag everything.

• I suggest not reading more than a few weeks ahead, because the discussion will return to chap 6 pt 1 when Jan 4th comes!

Even if you’re not reading ahead, if you have questions or comments about CCS Vol 2, feel free to post them in this thread!

Let’s go ! I’m already halfway through (but I need to slow down and read ひとりぼっち too). Only a couple pages were really challenging, the rest was simple enough.

So many awesome reveals already that I need to debrief. I can’t wait for the club to start !

Decided to pick up しろくまカフェ to read on my own and also participating in the 一人ぼっち book club to distract me so I’m not reading ahead, but can’t wait to get started with everyone properly in January! Especially after simboubous comment… much to anticipate!!

Ok, I’m going to set the book aside because I’d finish it over the holidays if I keep going.

So far, this is pretty much in line with volume one, and I suppose some chapters would be readable in one week. We’ll see how this goes.

I didn’t end up jumping right back in as I said I would. Cracked open the first bit today…whew that’s a lot of big words! Took me way too long just to translate the first 4 pages. My goal is to have at least the first week translated before we start up again, hopefully the first and second week. But we will see I also added some translations/pages to the vocab sheet for the first week.

Alright, I’ve read the first seven pages! That’s enough for today.

Grammar Point: ねば

I had some trouble understanding おさめねば in the handwriting section, so I figured I’d write about it here.
Base verb: 収める (おさめる) - “to capture on film”
ねば appears to be a shortform of ねばならない, meaning “must”
So おさめねば is “must capture (on film)”!

Thanks for this, that was definitely a tough one.

Probably not gonna post full translations, at least for this week but I enjoyed reading this part a lot. Coming back to CCS after some time has made me feel pretty good about reading speed and general grammar improvements! Hope everyone else is seeing similar. Excited to hopefully properly meet tomoyo’s mom next chapter!! I really love how much personality each character has in this manga happy to be back reading this again!

Confused about this part from page 11

誰も勝てないんだもんな （だれもかてないんだもんな）

Does this mean something like nobody can win against Sakura, or Sakura can’t win against anyone?

• I have not met Tomoyo’s mother even once, and so I look forward to it. But I have never heard a story from Tomoyo about her father. Her father passed away, she doesn’t even know what he looks like. She has a lot of complicated feelings about it.

I read this with the も referring to the 誰 as “also, who can win against her” (who as in “no specific person”). Open to being wrong on this though, it just made the most sense to me grammatically in the context

It definitely translates as ‘nobody can win against Sakura’ (I remember this scene from the anime, which I’ve watched with subtitles far too many times ), but if I try to break it down…

The way I read it, there is no ‘against’ actually present in the wording of the sentence.
誰も - No one / Everyone (according to Jisho, it can translate to both depending on context)
勝てない - Can’t win
んだもん - somewhat childish sounding way of adding an explanatory tone or emphasis (I think?)
な - huh/right?
In other words, 誰も勝てないんだもんな actually works out to something like ‘Everyone can’t win, huh?’, with an emphasis on that being part of an explanation or excuse. If we use the context of them talking about Sakura being fast in the previous sentence as part of that tone of explanation/excuse, I think we can assume it’s more like they’re saying ‘everyone else can’t win’. Or, to use more natural-sounding English - ‘no one else can win’.

So, I think I would translate that whole panel as: “That fourth-grader Kinomoto… she sure is fast, isn’t she? No one else can win, huh?”

I think @Dimsumwitch ‘s page translation is right, but maybe for the wrong reasons? The も particle is often found with question words, and when paired with a negative verb, becomes negative. In a simplified example for this 誰も勝てない sort of reads as “everyone can not win” tofugu explains it best though so just check out this section - there’s a helpful table too Japanese Question Words: 何・どこ・だれ and More

I really like this breakdown! I just wanted to add, I’ve actually been thinking that in context, I’d probably translate this sentence as
“That fourth-grader Kinomoto sure is fast, huh?"

I think it makes sense not to mention Kinomoto’s gender, because after this Tomoyo goes out of her way to mention Sakura-chan’s first name (and to use “chan,” which is typically used for girls). Then she emphasizes that Sakura-chan is ”とても可愛い”. This implies to me she thinks the boys don’t understand who Sakura is.

Furthermore, on page 12, when Sakura actually appears, the boys are embarrassed and go “あれが木之元?”, confirming that they definitely didn’t know who Sakura is. They are also enthused on page 13 about the fact that she really was cute (“ほんとにかわいかったも！”).

I think the boys may have overheard someone talking about a person named “Kinomoto” who was really fast, and assumed they were a boy.

Alternatively, the boys may have actually seen “Kinomoto” on the field doing her serious face in her sports clothes, and then they were surprised when she showed up smiling in her cheerleading clothes instead. In this case, they may have known “Kinomoto” was a girl, but they didn’t expect her to have a cute side, so they didn’t think to refer to her with “chan”.
