How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 6 reading, you will need one of the following:

  • the original edition (OG) or refurbished edition (RE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 6 (softcover, hardcover or digital)

  • the anniversary edition (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 4-5 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

  • The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

  • Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

  • To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

  • The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

  • To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Schedule:

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

Week Date Chapter Pages (RE) Page Count (no inter-chapter art)

2 Sep 6 24 51-98 45

Vocabulary:

The vocab sheet lists three sets of page numbers: OG (original edition), RE (refurbishment edition) and AE (anniversary edition). When adding page numbers, please use printed page numbers for consistency, even if you are using a digital edition.

*Note: I’ll only be putting in some more difficult vocabulary sporadically, but you’re welcome to add your own translations if you’re interested in doing so!

Note: On occasion there have been differences in dialogue between the editions. If the vocab sheet contains words that you can’t find in your manga, please check if it’s for a different edition than yours!

It’s Volume 6 Time!

It’s a new volume, and our first reading pace increase of the series! We’ll be reading the entirety of chapter 23 this week. Remember to pace yourselves!

Excited to try out the new reading pace - good luck everyone! We should introduce a pace regression option in the next poll in case members find that this was too much!

Yep, I’m planning to do so!

Wow! What a chapter. Really just throws you straight into the action and doesn’t stop! I’m finding (even with a dictionary always in hand) that I’m starting to read with a good enough pace that I can actually get somewhat immersed in scenes and feel the intended pace of the manga. Starting to get somewhat handy with the ios Japanese keyboard too thanks to my constant use of ichi.moe and jisho.org hahaha

I laughed out loud at Li knocking out Yukito! But also imagine getting knocked out by like a 12 year old…….

Nice to finally see Kero in his true form too

Also first time in a while I’ve changed volumes at the same time as everyone else. Feels good to put another book on the finished pile :flexed_biceps: good job everyone!

Yeah this chapter was really great - lots of good moments, and not too much dialogue either haha. On the subject of iOS keyboards, are you talking about the swipe keyboard? I recently finally made the switch over to it and my typing speed has slowed down SO much compared to the roman keyboard… hope to get like you soon

With all his magical training, Li could probably knock out any of us with just a touch :joy:

And yeah, this was a great chapter! I’m excited to see the Clow Cards all collected.

I’m not sure what the official name of it is, but it’s the one that has a 3x4 grid with a “root” sound in each square. Forum kept giving me issues uploading images, but it looks like this.

I did find it incredibly slow when I started using it, but once you get used to the layout and some of the logic (ie ち is under た because it is a dulled t-sound) it gets faster. I get lots of practice looking up kanji  I also love having a huge library of unconventional kaomoji at my fingertips!

Clamp suddenly realizing the story needs to move forward so the last elemental cards just appear here in street.

One Kero sentence I couldn’t entirely parse:

page 39

最後のカードが「火」やのうてよかった
What’s that やのうて here ?

Remember, in Kansai, だ becomes や. And this のうで is Kansai for なくて.

だ + なくて = じゃなくて

In context here, Kero is saying:

Standard Japanese: 「最後のカードが『火』じゃなくてよかった」
English: “I’m glad the last card wasn’t ‘Fire’.”

I don’t see this one often from Kansai dialect in manga, but it does come up rarely.

Here's an example from 舞妓さんちのまかないさん.

As a maiko-in-training, Sumire has earned her own name as a maiko. But her childhood friend Kiyo, now the cook for the maikos, continues to call her Su-chan.

Another maiko-in-training reminds Kiyo of Sumire’s new name.

“Kiyo-san, it’s not ‘Su-chan’, it’s 'Momohana-san.”

Yeah, I was thinking as I read it that it was nice that our first one-week chapter had a number of pages with not much text in them.

Yeah, I had already read that first chapter and it was actually the reason why I suggested we read some chapters in a single week.

Week 2: Chap 24

Here’s our second week of reading a full chapter! I hope last week went well for you – if you’re struggling to keep up, hang in there and we’ll be back to two weeks per chapter next week!

It’s the final card! How exciting! The stakes have really gone up… I’m already wondering what’ll happen next week!

Check out the home post for details on the week’s reading.

When we saw the reaction of Li when meeting Yukito, I initially thought Yukito was a clow card. But hey apparently I wasn’t too far of.

Week 3: Chap 25 Pt 1

Alright folks, we’re back to two weeks a chapter! We’ll continue at this pace until the end of the volume, at which point we can consider the reading pace again.

Last week was quite a shocker, wasn’t it? Maybe we’ll get some clarity this week – or maybe just more questions!

Check out the home post for details on the week’s reading.

Nothing much to say about this week besides Omg!!! :scream:

AE page 70, Kero says “封印したカードを使て月に勝てたら”. I thought it was interesting that they are using the specific furigana of つこて in the manga. I’m assuming it’s つかて with a kansai accent?

You are correct on the Kansai.

Here’s an example from another Kansai-dialect character:

And from the same series, I encountered the following while reading on Friday:

I haven’t seen this usage outside of Cardcaptor Sakura and Detective Conan.

With you on this, wow what a jaw dropping chapter and we’re not even half way through. I remember complaining through the early volumes that it was a bit formulaic and it felt like nothing ever really happens, but this was totally worth it
