Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Cha カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Book Club cherry_blossom Week 4pter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

  • For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers in the panels and the page number in the UI are always 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the UI page number, this will give you the accurate page number!

This is the last week of the book club as the ABBC book club. However, @zucchi in the home thread has volunteered to run an offshoot club, so that will be starting in the future (possibly with a break for Christmas)

Hope you all enjoyed the book club! For those who have finished their first manga, congratulations! Hopefully the experience will help you read more in the future, whether it’s the offshoot club for card captor sakura, future ABBC reads, or independent reading.

For those who did not finish this manga, don’t feel bad. I failed to keep up with my first club too, back when it was ルリドラゴン. You’re of course free to follow along at your own time, the threads for this book club will be open for a long time yet, or if you want to try something a little easier, the next ABBC book club is a volume of Doraemon and starts in one week.

Alternatively, if you feel like you want something a little more challenging, the Beginner Book Club is also starting a new manga next week with ひとりぼっちの○○生活 (not to be confused with ぼっち・ざ・ろっく, which the Intermediate Manga Club is currently reading, but is even harder).

Also if you’re reading the anniversary edition and going “Wait, the club is over? There’s two chapters left!”, then it’s worth mentioning that chapters 6 and 7 are part of volume 2 for everyone else. So if you join the offshoot you’ll get to read them with a club too, or you can read them on your own time if you’d prefer that option.

Thank you so much for running this club!! I remember asking whether or not it would be a bad idea to join back in August (maybe?) when I was pretty early on in Genki I and had just gotten started on WaniKani. I had only done graded readers, so every page was a massive chore when we got started. Since then, not only have my skills picked up with reading, but I’m about as far into Genki II as I was Genki I, and I gained the confidence to read a handful of other easy manga concurrently with this club. (On Yotsuba vol. 3 right now and I know it’s the cliche 1st manga but it is so cute I genuinely love reading it) Thanks so much to everyone contributing to this club week after week too, it’s been a blast! Hope everyone had as good as an experience as I have. Also, now that I’ve finished volume one, I’m itching to read more, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for the offshoot club as well. Well done everyone!

And of course, my translation for this week!

Pg 172
  • This time, I’ll try to use a receiver (here’s your part, Kero).
  • If there’s something there, you surely should pass the knowledge to us.
  • Don’t do anything stupid.
  • Right.
  • Look!
Pg 173
  • Like the photo showed, that woman…
  • Sakura’s mother??
  • But, why this time does everyone see the same thing??
  • Fly!!
Pg 174
  • Mom? Why are you here? Is there something you want to say?
  • A!
  • Sakura!
  • Sakura!
Pg 175
  • Mom!
  • It’s painful… mom…
  • Why?
  • Are you lonely? Did you want to be here with me?
Pg 176
  • If it’s really Sakura’s mother, I wonder if she’d put her in danger [flashback].
  • This is wrong!!
  • My mother wouldn’t do this!
Pg 177
  • I understand!
  • I’ve seen that pattern!
  • It’s a Clow Card!
Pg 178
  • Where’s the card?!
  • Probably in the center of the pond!
  • Water!
Pg 179
  • It’s the card!
  • Return to the form which you should be, Clow Card!
Pg 180
  • It’s the Illusion Card.
  • I see, so that’s why everyone saw various things.
  • What do you mean by that?
  • It’s a card that can show people what they want to see.
  • There are varying things in each respective person’s heart that it can show.
  • So of course everyone sees something different.
Pg 181
  • Speaking of which, before, when I was passing through here, I was thinking of the Great Penguin King.
  • Just before, we saw Sakura’s mom. She showed us the photo. Her mom of course came out because we all were thinking about it.
  • The other day I thought to help, and I was pushed and flown away…
  • Sakura’s happy feelings of being able to see her mom, just that strength must have done it.
  • But I’m happy.
  • My mom is not all alone in that pond.
Pg 182
  • If we could meet, I’d be pleased with it, but…
  • I’m more happy that she is in a beautiful place up in the sky.
  • Of course, Sakura, your perseverance makes your mother relieved.
  • Well, this time maybe she was a little worried, probably.
  • Agghhh, I’m soaked again.
  • That’s fine!
  • I thought something like that might happen.
  • This time I came prepared with a change of clothes!
Pg 183
  • Ehhhh?? The new semester starts today?!
  • Brother! There’s probably morning practice starting today!
  • I have a motorbike, so still plenty of time.
  • Here, your bento!
  • Thanks!
Pg 184
  • Bye, mom!!
Pg 185
  • This time I was just a little worried, so I came, but everything is already fine.
  • See ya!

Thanks for doing this thread every week! I can safely say I never would’ve finished a whole manga in Japanese without a weekly thread to post in

This last section was very sweet, definitely easier to read and parse by the end! Some passages were still difficult but I feel like I learned a lot.

I’m sticking with ABBC for at least one more book but might try my hand at full translations next time.

See you all in the Doraemon threads!

It has been so lovely reading along in the club with everyone over the past couple of months  I just finished up the final section and had so much fun with the whole volume. This is my first time doing a whole book with a book club and I can tell my reading has improved so much and I have gained a lot of helpful tips that will carry me through more reading on my own time. Thank you so much araigoshi for hosting this club!!

I think I will take a break from clubs for a little bit, mostly because I bought the wrong volume of Doraemon (I have just plain old volume 1) but will definitely look out for a future club for this series! I really want to continue on I still don’t fully trust Yukito

The ending to this volume was really nice and I’m glad it mostly wrapped up and didn’t end on a big cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what sort of stuff Sakura and the team continue to handle! I might try to post my translations for this final set of pages later next week

My favourite moment from this week:

I love the little headset for Kero  so cute

Thank you @araigoshi for running the book club, and thank you everyone for participating in!

Having a weekly thread was a very nice source of motivation. The translations I did at the beginning were also a very nice exercise, and I’m happy it could help others.

My last book club was Horimiya a year ago, and Sakura felt significantly easier. I feel I could go back to Rentaru onichan or Horimiya and finish them without too much trouble.

I’ll be reading the BBC next week. The ABBC looks really simple, so maybe I’ll also keep an eye on it, we’ll see.

Congrats everyone who’s done! It was so fun reading with everyone . I was happy to finish it along with everyone else.

Although it definitely felt like a manga targeted more towards a younger audience, it was still surprisingly fun to read. Going into it, I knew I was going to enjoy the art because a long time ago, I liked the anime’s art as well, and other works by CLAMP are also gorgeous… but it was genuinely fun being able to read the manga in Japanese~

The most challenging part for me was the kansai ben, since I rarely get to hear it / consume media that has it, but by the end of the volume, some of the different grammar stuck with me so I didn’t have to look it up~

@araigoshi thanks for hosing the book club!

And that’s it!! Chapter 5 done!!! What a sweet note to end on.

Thank you again @araigoshi for running the club! Congratulations to everyone who finished, and thank you for everyone’s participation.

Also, I’ve posted about it in the home thread, but I figured I’d post about it here too!

The Offshoot Book Club Home Thread Is Ready!

I’m excited to read vol 2 and onwards with you folks!

If you’re planning to read with us, please go to the thread and answer the polls re: when you would like to start the club, and what pace you would like to read at.

The earliest this club will potentially start is Dec 14th, so make sure to answer before then!

Also, if there are any issues with the thread or anything is unclear, please let me know!

Well, I finally got around to reading this just in time for it to end, lol. Oh well, it was a good read, and I plan on going マイペース for the offshoot club, too.

I need to join the chorus of “thank yous” as well. I haven’t read this section yet, but like others I would have never read this far without a little community to help me stay focused and motivated. My reading skills have definitely improved. I find I study Japanese in waves (eg will go really hard on wanikani for a few weeks, then nothing for a few weeks), and the book club has made sure I’m at least doing something every once in a while so my skills don’t totally stagnate. There was a lot of material in this series that was more difficult than I expected, and I don’t think I would have challenged myself to work through it without everyone’s help. Thank you everyone! I will see you in the offshoot thread and maybe also some of the other (A)BBC threads too :star_struck: :cherry_blossom:

Adding to the well-deserved wave of thank yous, araigoshi!

This wasn’t my first time reading manga, but it was my first book club, and I really enjoyed the experience! I did end up a bit delayed on the reading for the last couple weeks, but I’m caught up now and looking forward to the start of zucchi’s offshoot club. Congrats and thank you to all the other participants too - reading other people’s translations here was definitely helpful!
