Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Cha カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Book Club cherry_blossom Week 4pter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

  • For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers in the panels and the page number in the UI are always 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the UI page number, this will give you the accurate page number!

How well do you remember the incantation from week 1? It shows up verbatim again this week.

Some fun new-to-me vocab this week (I liked 腹話術 “ventriloquism”) and of course Sakura’s outfit was so cute. I thought the action shot on page 61 was really gorgeous.

On page 55, where Kero is complaining about Sakura’s impression of him, did anyone figure out what 阿保な means? I couldn’t find a good translation anywhere.

It looks like a leader snuck into your kanji. It’s 阿呆.

Edit: Out of curiosity, I searched all the manga I’ve read where アホ is written in kanji. The only results were:

  • Some ancient characters in Flying Witch
  • An older police officer in Detective Conan
  • Kero

Otherwise, it seems to always be katakana (in my reading experience).

Ah that makes more sense - the only results for 阿保 were surnames!

Let’s go ! I had already finished this week. Things are getting a bit trickier, but still manageable. Next week looks harder, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

page 51

A huuuuge bird…

I didn’t see it myself…

Another kid too [saw it], I don’t remember who. EDIT: woops, it’s “she didn’t say anything”

page 52

Well then… The probability that we’re facing a Clow card is High ! (not sure about the exact way to translate that 絡む. I don’t suppose the card got stuck on a bird. So I guess the idea is that a card is involved, they are dealing with a card, etc.)

Right !

I say, we have no choice but to return together to the “crime scene” [the place where this happened].

sakura sunglasses, Pocky (it’s that long thin biscuit coated in chocolate. We call them “Mikado” in France)

The crime scene… you mean school ?

Indeed ! Because criminals always [certainly, without a doubt] come back to the crime scene ! (That osaka ben さかい again. I love this for some reason.)

Lately, Kero has been absorbed in detectives shows rebroadcasts

I myself love [name of a detective show here]. (this reads like “the league of secret innocent detectives ? Probably made up, but I guess it would be an anime where kids solve mysteries ?)

Tomoyochan is so [something] (thats the second time in the book we use しぶい… and again it’s hard to translate… Quietly refined ?)

(Maybe I’ll come back to the handwritten part later.)

page 53

Sakura ! It’s time to be a card captor !

Then, let’s (put on) this outfit today ! (I tried to express a lyrical spring season !)

Knock knock !

How about some apple pie that I tried to bake ? (that てみたんだけど indicate some uncertainty about that apple pie, but that sentence is weird. Maybe I’m missing something)

Thaaaaaaaanks !

Pretends to be a plushie →

What? Is Tomoyo chan the only guests ?

Ha ?

page 54

I could hear the voice of another person but… A lively Osaka ben one…

Ah, that’s me !

Nandeyanen ! Nandeyanen (Now Sakura, that’s kind of offensive)

Practicing ventriloquism with that plushy ?

Indeed…

… How could you make someone as cool as me a ventriloquist doll…. (It’s weird how kero face rarely gets very expressive)

You still angry ?

page 55

NATURALLY !

Someone as cool and stylish doing something as stupid… (part of the sentence is omitted after を, I suppose it’s “having to do” or “being made to do”)

Nandeyanen ! Nandeyanen !

Kero chan… I was kidding… (I can’t read the sentence before that one, even tho it should not be hard.)

page 56

I’m sorry ! I’ve made you wait !

No, I have just arrived.

Well, miss…

Yes. If I contact you, please come to meet us.

page 57

If he can be seen that would mean trouble, so he hides as a plushie.

Good evening !

These people are your bodyguard, right ?

When I’m going out at night, Mother would be worried if they don’t come with me. (This makes absolutely no sense, 8 years old Tomoyo can just go out at night and then send her bodyguard away, but hey let’s suspend our disbelief here ^_^)

When it’s late at night or something, bodygards always come to check on her. (I have trouble understanding this whole sequence. Did her bodyguard just droped her by the school ? Did they just come to see where she was ?)

On TV and such, it’s men, but they are all women.

Tomoyo chan told me that it’s something her mother decided, but I don’t really understand (oof, is this about the fear of potential sexual assault ?)

Wow ! There aren’t that many elementary school students with bodyguard!

Well ! There are not that many students who can use magic powers. (smile)
)

Those pages 56-57 are kinda tricky. I’d be curious to know what everyone think.
Edit : I had misread 小学生 as 小学校. Everything makes sense now.

page 58

Suits you well, Sakura !

Ah… I’m not so sure / it’s nothing

No, as a seamstress, I’m [satisfied by how it came out]

Right, I should not forget to take those back before going home. (We saw on the previous pages that she came on rollerbladea. She has to take them back home afterward, otherwise her father would guess that she snuck out at night)

What ? Kerochan ?

There is.

There is clearly a Clow card in the school.

page 59-62

It felt like this during PE, too ! (now look at that warrior look on Sakura’s face, isn’t that cool)

It’s her ! THE FLY CARD !

Key that conceals the power of shadows, reveal your true form to us ! By the contract [that binds us], I [Sakura] order you ! RELEASE ! (OMG SHE SAID THE THING)

Windy !

Ah ! Don’t ! “Fly” is…

Let the wind become binding chains !

Kyaaaaaaa !!!..

I am laughing so hard, spoilers

Tomoyo is so savage

Had me giggling for a bit … “There aren’t many elementary school kids with bodyguards” – “there aren’t many elementary school kids who can use magic” :sob::fire:

I love the flowers so so so much here on this dress. I’m just imagining how it would look IRL embroidered on… so pretty (there look like separate pieces sewed on because they’re protruding, but it would look really cool if they weren’t). With the flowy skirt, it also seems fairly ok to move in as well~ still, like nearly all outfits in CCS, not quite suitable for fight situations… but it’s ok. Supposed to be pretty~

Done hehe

So I have a couple questions.

page 58

忘れず what’s with that ず? Is that some grammar point I don’t know yet?

Page 62

I don’t understand what’s happening here. What’s happening in the sentence
戒めのくさりとなれ?

page 58: 帰るまえに忘れずに取って帰らなきゃ
https://jlptsensei.com/learn-japanese-grammar/ずに-zuni-meaning/
帰るまえに before leaving, before I leave
忘れずに without forgetting
取って帰らなきゃ must take and return

page 62: 戒めのくさりとなれ
となる means to become. The verb is in imperative form. “Become a chain of caution!”

Yeaaah I recognized a kanji I just learned!

焼 → bake

Small victories are still victories

Thank you so much! Just today I actually watched the Tokini Andy Quartet lesson where ずに got explained. Even though I’m sure I wouldn’t have recognized it here without your explanation. It’s just such a nice coincidence :heart_hands:

No problem! This is the Absolute Beginner Book Club, so it’s totally normal if you don’t know every grammar point yet. You’ll pick them up soon enough!

Just finished this week and things are going pretty smoothly for me now  I was a bit confused for some of the panels on page 59 but simboubou’s translation helped me clear up all my questions

There are so many moments that are making me laugh in this manga! Including this one, The smiley emotion and flower are so funny and then Sakura stressing

More spoilery plot things

I’m excited to hopefully see some sort of battle for next week! I’m curious how Tomoyo will be taking part or if she’s just a bystander

I understood it as

page 51

“None of the other children said anything either”

他の子も = the other children also
なにも = nothing
いってなかった = didn’t say (言う)
し = (adding reasons)

So literally “The other children also nothing didn’t say…” The double negative is confusing, but this is what I think is meant (also, I confirmed it using AI and Google Translate).

This week was good, but I think I enjoy the funny/slice of life bits the most. Like theapple pie scene this week was fun! The pace of the club has already picked up a lot, but trying to stick with it!!

I’m done the week’s reading! Woo, just in time. I’ve been busy prepping for my trip to Japan, but I’m glad I was still able to keep up!

So nice to be able to actually read the incantation in this week’s reading instead of struggling through it word by word, whoo.

Week 7 thread up!

Caught up with this week’s reading! Feels good to be on track  And reading through the incantation was so much easier this time around!

Finished just in time for another week - some parts were challenging (I keep having to check Osaka-ben over and over again) but overall it was a fluid read. I get so nostalgic when Sakura says the incantation words - I vividly remember the anime scenes I used to watch so much
