Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Cha カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Book Club cherry_blossom Week 4pter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

  • For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers in the panels and the page number in the UI are always 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the UI page number, this will give you the accurate page number!

There’s a chunky textbox on page 41, but other than that, no kansai-ben, no archaic dialogue, and at first scan, no major new grammar points this week.

Note on Page Numbers

We reach the end of our first chapter this week, which means the page numbers start to diverge. I’ll include the page numbers for both the refurbished edition and original edition in the header from here on out. For most digital copies and hardcovers, you’ll follow the refurbished edition page numbers (if your copy has 196 or 256 pages). For older digital copies and paperbacks, you’ll follow the original edition page numbers (if your copy has 186 pages). As a reminder, the difference between the original and refurbished edition is that the refurbished edition has extra inter-chapter pages, so you’re not missing any store content. The 256 page anniversary edition has chapters 6 and 7, which are part of volume 2 in the other editions and are not in scope for this book club.

Wooo~ finished reading already~ that marks the end of the first chapter :eyes: so exciting.

page 41 陰なる活躍

あなたの陰なる活躍がこの近辺の平和を守っているんですわ

The 陰なる threw me off for a second with this usage of なる, but it’s just basically a fancy way of saying あなたの裏の活躍がこのあたりの平和を守ってる. Thought I’d post it in case someone else is confused too~

Random thoughts

:joy: I always loved the outfits in Sakura, but only now I’m realising how impractical they actually are :sob:. Having to perform all sorts of stunts while wearing random hats, flappy pieces of fabric, etc. being a magic girl is just not easy lol…

Yeah, I also loved the outfits, considered getting some as cosplay outfits at times :stuck_out_tongue:

But unlike some other magical girls, the outfits are not at all magical so double the work for Sakura there

 Big facts. She’s really made to work so hard, poor girl!

Already done with this week’s chapter.

On my previous attempts at the ABBC, I ended up dropping the book, but for now I’m able to read every week in advance and find time to be fairly active in the club. Hopefully I can make it to the end. :crossed_fingers:

A nice lighter chapter! I love Tomoyo and her making all those outfits for Sakura (and insisting on getting video of her in action).

The character profile box text was so small, I took a photo on my phone and zoomed in on that :joy:

My first batch of translations. Nothing really tricky this week, beside a couple details.

page 40

If you think about it, I was tricked by Korochan.

Ah, that’s not an easy thing (not sure about this one. What is she talking about ?)
EDIT : that’s probably something more like “there’s nothing you could do”

“The card captor protecting the city from the disaster of the Clow Cards”. It’s so cool !

With Tomoyo chan, we’ve been in the same class since 3rd year.

She’s smart and beautiful, and she’s the daughter of the CEO of the company called Daidouji (or something) corporation and so she has a lot of money but she is a very good kid. (that was quite a mouthful, but Sakura is piling up a lot of information without pause here)

page 41

She’s the only one to know that I’m gathering the Clow cards.

She helping me in all kinds of ways but…

Well, how many cards have you gathered ?

Only 3…

Give it all, Sakura !

Your secret activity is preserving the peace of the neighborhood !

page 42

Well, please have a video shot next time too !

Let’s also have a showy outfit !

[handwritten] I should be able to design it (I read デザイン はできる はずのよ)

Right.

My outfit when I go card-hunting.They were all made by Tomoyo for me.

page 43

Surely, for when doing something special, you HAVE to wear something suited to the occasion. (That べき looks like an exaggeration, like Tomoyo is saying that wearing a nice outfit is some sort of moral obligation)

So, I promise I’ll capture videos of those memories (There is a はず here that I don’t get. EDIT: it’s not a ず, it’s a お thank @zucchi )

She’s a good kid and all but, she may be a biiiiiiit… excentric.

(I’m skipping that text box, there’s nothing really difficult here. No grammar, only words: date of birth, favorite dish, etc…)

EDIT: …and the rest

page 44

Excellent ! Good, Kinomoto !
As usual, splendid athletic skill !
Eeeeh, ‘cause I love PE !

Brother and sister are both skilled !

Of course, it’s brother’s soccer club
High school training field is right next to us. (That’s totally not what she says. I struggle to read that part)
Yukito san !

page 45-48

I can’t see Yukito san ! Bother is blocking the view !
Sakura chan ?
(Smile) Yukitosaaaaan !!!
Saku…

Ahahahah !
Ah, Yukitosan…
Brother…
What ???

A bird ?

Sakura, are you all right ? Are you hurt ?
This surely was a bird… but, a bird so large… I can’t believe it.

A Card ?
To be continued…

Finished my first read as well. Didn’t use the vocabulary sheet and I think I still understood everything. I might read through it a second time though :muscle:

My thoughts on the parts you had questions about (+ a small thing on page 41):

page 40

“Ah, that’s not an easy thing”
(Just in case, the line in my version is
あら
なかなか
できること
でわ
ありませんわ)
I think this is a softer/fancier version of 仕方がない. Maybe
“Oh? Well, there isn’t much that can be done about it.”

page 41

Since this is まだ三枚 rather than もう三枚 I think “Still (just) three…” would work better here than “Already three…”

page 43

What I have on my page is
そして記念のビデオ撮影はお約束ですわー
Assuming we have the same, I think you may have read the お as ず since it’s elongated.
So it would just be 約束 with honorific お.
(Apparently お約束 can also suggest something being predictable or guaranteed, so maybe it’s more like “And I’ll definitely take a commemorative video!”)

page 44

I read:
どうして高校の運動場ととなりどうしなのよ
So pretty close to your translation, it’s just that it’s a question.
“Why are we next to the high school training field?”

nice to have a lighter week! I was a little worried by the first page, but the rest was easier.

The contrast between the way Tomoyo-chan and Sakura act around their crushes is really funny, Tomoyo-chan acts like a maiden in love and Sakura just goes feral

Really enjoyed this week, it’s nice to have a lighter session after last week. That doesn’t mean I’m not struggling, but only for a smaller duration

page 43

For anybody interested in the outfit of Sakura and what’s on it. This is a T shirt from a french brand called “Morgan de Toi”. On it is written:

Le tournesol nous fait tourner la tête.
Beaucoup. Passionnément. A la folie.
Je suis Morgan de toi.

The sunflower makes our head turn.
A lot. Passionately. Till madness. (french variations on the loves-me, loves-me-not motif)
I’m deeply in love with you. (french expression and pun with the brand name)

I know the brand but was a bit surprised to see it here! So I made some research and the T shirt was worn by Phoebe in a episode of Friends in 1997. Sakura’s manga started in 1996 so I guess the T shirt was famous worldwide at that time.

Wow, thanks for the trivia! I must admit, I glossed over the shirt, saw it didn’t make full sentences, and assumed it was generic french just for the sake of looking cool. Cool to know it was a real and contemporary shirt!

I guess I’ll make my first attempt at translations, because it seems to help to actually try and translate everything. Please feel free to correct any mistakes.

Page 40

SAKURA: If you think about it, I was tricked by Kero-chan.

TOMOYO: Oh no! There isn’t much you can do. I’m guessing that あら is something like “oh no”
The Cardcaptor who protects the neighborhood from the disaster of the Clow cards. Cool!!!

TEXTBOX: I’ve been in the same class as Tomoyo since 3rd grade. She’s smart and beautiful, and she’s the daughter of the president of a really big company, the Daidouji Corporation. She’s really rich but a good kid.

Page 41

TEXTBOX: Only Tomoyo knows that I collect Clow cards. She helps me in various ways but…
TOMOYO: So, how many cards have you collected?
SAKURA: Only 3.
TOMOYO: Keep going, Sakura!
Your behind-the-scenes activity is protecting the peace of the neighborhood!

Page 42

TOMOYO: Well, next time please also take a video, okay?
Let’s have the outfit also be showy!
TEXTBOX: Well then.
My outfit for card collecting was fully made by Tomoyo for me.

Page 43

TOMOYO: As I thought, when you do something special you must wear clothes to suit the occasion. Don’t really know how to translate the やぱり
TEXTBOX: She’s a good kid, but maybe she’s a liiiiitle unusual sometimes.
I’m going to skip all of the little things, because I’m too lazy to translate that all lol. Just seems like some basic information about her

Page 44-45

COACH: Looking good! Great, Kinomoto.
TOMOYO: As usual, wonderful athetic ability!
SAKURA: Hehehe, well, I love PE…

TOMOYO: Wow, both brother and sister are fantastic…
SAKURA: Naturally. Brother is in the soccer team.
Yukito-san!!!

Page 46-47

SAKURA: I can’t see Yukito-san!
Brother is blocking him!
Yukito-san!!

SAKURA: aaaaaaa
Ah, Yukito-san~!!!
Brother!
[Wind sounds]
SAKURA: What?!!

Page 48-49

SAKURA: A bird?!
TOMOYO: Sakura! Are you okay?
Do you have a wound? I’m guessing that the お is just honorific here, and the word is けが
SAKURA: Surely it was a bird.
But such a big bird?
Well, I never!
Was it a Clow Card?
[To be continued]

Definitely a bit tricky, and I had to look up a ton of words, but there wasn’t really any grammar I didn’t already know, except for べき, which I had to look up.

Yeah, writing out the translations is a great way to study! Honestly, I don’t like to dedicate the time to do that, but reading everyone’s translations and seeing if I notice anything that any of us got wrong helps me figure stuff out myself. c:

Page 42

Tomoyo’s line is “Please let me take a video” rather than “Please take a video” – see Japanese Verb Causative Form させる.

“My outfit for card collecting was fully made by Tomoyo for me” →
Literally, “My clothes for when I went searching for cards are all things Tomoyo-chan made for me.”
Maybe better phrased as “Tomoyo made all the outfits I’ve worn while searching for cards.”
The critical thing here is the plural – though Japanese doesn’t have plural nouns you can see in the pictures there’s a variety of outfits. Also, 全部 doesn’t refer to “she fully made them” but “they are all made by her”.

Page 43

“As I thought” looks like a fine translation, but btw, Tomoyo is using the more formal やはり, not やっぱり.

I’m all done with week 5 as well! I’m glad to see some more interaction between Tomoyo and Sakura! Like others here, I mostly did vocab lookups this week with little grammar that I didn’t know - I did have to look up causative but yay for a new verb form for me!

I have one question this week after reading everyone’s translations

Page 45

I took a shot at deciphering the handwriting on the bottom of this page. Here’s what I got:
どうしろ高校の運動場ととなりどうしなおす
I translated it as something along the lines of “How am I stuck with the high school’s sports field and that guy (her brother) being next door?” based on the breakdown of the sentence on ichi.moe. I also tried using chatgpt to do a break down but the translation it gave me didn’t really make sense in this context.

Did anyone else read this the same/different from how I did?

Page 45

I read this as どうして高校の運動場ととなりどうしなのよ
or “Why are we next to the high school training field?”

Oooh I see the なのよ and I think that makes a lot more sense. Idk why I thought it was お, it is definitely の  I’ve found it helpful to physically write out the characters I’m unsure of
