Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Cha カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Book Club cherry_blossom Week 4pter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

  • For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers in the panels and the page number in the UI are always 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the UI page number, this will give you the accurate page number!

Hi all! A pretty easy chapter and my least favorite Sakura outfit so far, haha. I liked how Sakura came up with the solution for fighting this card.

I had a question if anyone had resources for a verb form I hadn’t seen before - when Sakura and her friends are talking about the pool monster (p 108), one girl says she ‘おばれそうに’ and Google translate has this as “almost drowned.” Is the “そう” a verb ending for “almost” that I’m not familiar with?

Also from Touya’s character info, it says his least favorite food is “ganmodoki,” so I had to look that up - Ganmodoki (Japanese Fried Tofu Patties) がんもどき • Just One Cookbook Not sure I’d be into this one either.

Yeah, そうに is a N4 point that indicates something “seems” to be a certain way. It’s a little more widely applicable than that direct translation, which is why the English translation went with almost to capture the nuance better.

Did a first read, and while what’s happening is clear enough, I can tell I missed a bit more meaning than usual. I’ll try to sit down and do a proper translation again.

So, I did a couple pages:

105

Right, no way.

But it might be a bit dangerous this time

It made the inside of the water bad. (not sure about the double past here)

Could you see something ?

Nope, nothing. Only water wrapping around [the foot]

So, maybe it was the “water” card.

106

It surely was a Clow card ! Well, if I catch and return il[to the book], we can go swimming again !

Well, it’s not that simple.

Because the “water” card, among the clow cards, has the highest magic. Making the four elements “earth”, “water”, “fire” and “air” is quite difficult.

107

On top of that, it’s a card that uses magic to attack. It’s very violent !

But if you bring the cards you have, it’s out of your reach.

108

The cheerleading lesson is over.

Thank you very much !

You foot was pulled and you almost drowned at the pool again today, I heard

I’m scared… If the teacher can’t figure out the origin, they said they would have no choice but to close it down.

(Remenice mode) But if I can match the four cards or something…

109

Nope, nope.

While it’s a similar high-level magic, using Windy, you won’t win against Water (Windy is too nice). Also, like water (actually water みず here, not the Water card), it doesn’t have a shape, so it’s hard to catch

First, you have to keep them together, and not spread them or line them up. The cards you have now are not good enough. (I’m realy struggling with this one, I fairly sure I’m wrong)

Are you ok, Sakura Chan ?

It’s nothing, the lesson was rough, so I’m a bit tired.

(I’m skipping the weird font, but I think it’s about them being surprised that Sakura, of all people, is tired after PE.)

I really struggling with what Kero says in page 109. Google translates gives something that makes sense, but I can’t exactly parse it.

I’ll take a stab at what Kero is saying in the last flashback panel on page 109

Page 109

まず ひとまとめにして ばらばらに ならんように せんとあかん
First of all, you must bundle them together to prevent them from getting scattered (I’m assuming this is referring to Sakura holding all the cards out of the book?)

With a bit of help from chatgpt, I got that ならんように = ならないように
and せんとあかん = しないといけない

いま さくらが 持ってるカードじゃ 無理や
It would be impossible with the cards you have right now (referring to capturing the water card)

I’m stopping for today at page 112 and will probably read the rest of this section tomorrow. Some farfetched speculation: I’m getting suspicious of Yukito because he’s so nice   and since Sakura is always getting distracted by him, what if he is actually a bad guy who knows Sakura’s mission and is trying to mess it up!! (As I said, very farfetched haha)

I only just realized after I saw your translation that I apparently let myself get complacent this week. I apparently just breezed by without fully absorbing what was written on the page - whoops. I’m going to go back and re-read, while trying to slow down a bit this time. As far as this section, here’s my shot at translating… (Thanks and kudos to magglett for the Kansai-ben conversions!)

Page 109

The way I’m interpreting the 4 lines in these panels is this:
同じ高度魔法でも風では水には勝てん. 風はやさしいからな.
Even though it has the same high level magic, you can’t win against Watery with Windy. Windy is too gentle/nice.
それに水みたいに形のないもんはつかまえにくいんや.
Also, something like water which has no shape is hard to catch.
まずひとまとめにしてばらばらにならんようにせんとあかん.
First you have to gather it all together, and then not let it break up into pieces/droplets [again].
いまさくらが持ってるカードじゃ無理や.
For the cards Sakura has now, that’s impossible.

So, to me, it seems like Kero is still talking about water/the Watery card in line 3, rather than Sakura’s cards… He says something needs to be bundled/gathered together, and then not allowed to break apart/scatter, but he doesn’t actually specify what that something is. Since Kero was talking about catching water in line 2, and then doesn’t specifically mention Sakura’s cards until line 4, my assumption is that the subject hasn’t changed yet in line 3, which would make the ‘something’ still be water…

Aaaah, good catch, I think you are right, he’s talking about the water.

And indeed, Sakura doesn’t use a card, but instead an (extremely efficient) freezer.

I had a funny feeling when I read ないすやで さくら!It was like “Is it what I think it is?”

I think these were pretty easy:

Page 110

Need to catch Watery card quickly
Someone will really drown
But… how to catch water…
Sakura chan
(cleaning in progress)
Yukito san!

Page 111

Thank you for yesterday
It was yummy
Finished the club?
Y-yes!
It’s cheerleading club right
Have you mastered baton twirling?
S… still bad
Touya said he was hit by the baton during practice at home
Ugh
As thank you for hotcakes, how about going to eat shaved ice next time?
A!? Is it ok!?
Of course

Finished this week! Loved the end of the chapter! Spoiler thoughts Great problem solving by Sakura to get this card! Kinda funny that it was Yukito’s suggestion of shaved ice that gave her the idea to use the freezer.

My favourite word from this week is もちあるけろでんわ

Had a rough week reading wise so just now wrapping this up a little late, but I feel like so much happened in this week!

The trick for the water card was really cool, and I’m most excited to see the shaved ice date in the next chapter!! Although something tells me it will be interrupted haha

Alright! Just finished this chapter. Going a little quickly as my priority is to catch up! I definitely don’t understand everything, but I do think I understand enough, at least.

Chapter thoughts

I like the part where Sakura’s friends from the cheerleading club are all like, “even Sakura is tired?!”

Also, good job with the capture, Sakura! Though, you can definitely ruin a freezer/the food in it by trying to freeze too much stuff at once, so it’s lucky it worked out!

That was quite a satisfying way for the chapter to end!
