よつばと!Vol 1 Discussion Thread (Beginner's Book Club)

I have really liked the interaction in this thread, with people asking and answering questions, even more because of it being Yotsuba!, one of my favorite manga and something I already planned to read beforehand.

So I would really like if this could continue, but I understand that perhaps the next book is going to be Kiki’s Delivery Service, which I’m slightly interested in, but not in the same degree as reading the next volumes of Yotsuba!

In this way, it seems that maybe the next week will be my last, but I’ll be here if you pick up some other manga in the future.

Kiki’s seems super hard compared to Yotsuba :frowning:

It’s always good practice to go a little bit over your level to learn new things, I would say that Yotsuba is beginner friendly, while a book like Kiki’s Delivery Service, while still being directed at youth, maybe is a little bit harder.

Most people in this thread should be able to read both, but Yotsuba is much more like a relaxing walk in the park, imo.

The other thing is the difference of reading manga on the computer, and reading an e-book.

yeah, when i first read yotsuba in japanese i was so excited because it was something i could read. and it took me a long time to find something else that i could read.
but obviously i didn’t read it that well because i missed the fact that she was adopted haha

Hey guys, please think about using spoiler tags. Several people are reading chapter 6 at the moment, but reading the thread normally inform us that Yotsuba is adopted. That’s definitely a spoiler.

Yeah, I’ve read like 92 chapters of Yotsuba! and I didn’t even know that :frowning:
Before someone else mentioned it some days ago.

As some type of external listening practice maybe?
And if you want to continue with Yotsuba! reading practice after the thread ends.

I found this youtube playlist: Manga reading Circle よつばと! 01

It’s interesting, their reading isn’t that good, except the guy that’s on the video, but at the same time you can see how he tries to tell them how to pronounce things, and understand new words and stuff.

He even has a small doc next to the manga page with vocab and explanations.

I’m going by the discussion in this thread
i didn’t know that until i read it in this thread, from someone who was (i assume) reading along with the pace of the book

I apologise though, i’ve spoilered it, hopefuly not too many people saw that

more seriously, I was not targetting you especially, I read this spoiler several times in the thread. I was just giving a reminder

yeah i went back and realised that people were quoting page 180 or something like that which is further than they are up to

Yotsuba 2 is coming after Kiki! I’ll be back for that, and I’ll see you here!

It’s fine to quote page 180, that’s in chapter 6 and we are reading chapter 6 at the moment.
It’s stuff that we are reading next week (chapter seven) or further in the future (further voumes) that need spoiler tags at this stage.

That is brilliant. And yes, the guy in the box really knows his stuff and is good at explaining it. I’ll definitely go back and listen to those. (Just a pity I can’t find them starting at chapter one, but I’ll listen to all I can wherever they are). Nice find!

Page 176

Okay, before I go to bed, a final question today.
On page 176 the mum is responding to Yotusba’s statement that she likes cicadas by saying:
いいわよね
Of course this just means “good”, but is followed by what looks to me like not one, not two, but three sentence ending particles.
わ - admiration?
よ - surprise?
ね - tag question
So, my question is, how would you put all this together?
I’m thinking something like: “wow, that’s good, isn’t it?”
(Making the whole thing “oh yes? wow, that’s good, isn’t it? cicadas”)
What do other people think?

Sure thing! I’ll see you there.

It’s really really good! I’m currently watching the second video, yeah, he had the idea to stream it after they had already started the reading club, but they do until chapter 30 something, so a lot to learn.

It’s also super funny, I’m learning and laughing with the voices they make. :joy:

I also found some for One Piece and Shingeki no Kyojin, but it’s not the same group and it’s not so good, so I dropped them.

Regarding your question, わ is a feminine particle, よ is for emphasis and trying to say that that’s what you think, and ね is like, right?

So she says something like:
いいわよね
That’s good! Isn’t it?

Pretty much what you understood from the sentence!

Thank you so much Kazzeon!

On page 119, Fuuka says これお隣に渡して書いてもらえばいいのよ.

I don’t understand what she meant by that. So I’d like more explanations on how to decipher this sentence correctly.

これ : this
お隣 : neighbor (respectful form)
に : Towards (or from since there’s もら a bit later in the sentence)
渡して : Te form of 渡す meaning to give/transfer
書いて : Te form of 書く meaning to write/compose
もらえば : Conditional form of 貰う meaning to receive
いい : Good

When I try to understand the sentence, it transforms into : Giving this to the neighbor would be good.
However, There’s a write and receive that gets left out. I don’t know how to make them fit in there (I don’t know how to explain what I want to correctly, I hope it is easy enough to understand)

So I was wondering what I was doing wrong.

They need to give it to the neighbor so he can sign it (and have it back I assume )
“We need to take this next door and have him sign it” - Yen Press translation

just posting to say your avatar is great :+1:

Thanks for the translation, but I still don’t know how :
これお隣に渡して書いてもらえばいいのよ transformed into “We need to take this next door and have him sign it”
