しろくまカフェ: Week 9 Discussion (Chapters 17 and 18)

I just now tried to figure it out without looking at your outcome, and I independently came up with the same thing. 「サケも獲り放題だったし」

It makes sense since (as I’m learning right now) 放題 attaches to a masu-stem verb, as is the case here, meaning “to do [verb] to one’s heart’s content”.

Edit: 獲り = とり

Just wanted to post to say that I’ve finally caught up again, though only sort of. Due to work and family pressures the past couple weeks I had to stop doing line by line translations for myself and just read as much as I could without the vocab sheet/a dictionary/Excel handy. I’ll go back and fill it in later, so now I have two bookmarks in the book. On the upside, I’m surprised at how little I’m missing? There was some dialogue in Grizzly’s chapter between him and Polar Bear that I didn’t quite catch, but most of this has been unexpectedly easy and enjoyable.

I guess I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their insight and helping me have the confidence to try reading.

I’m totally not gonna read the chapters only today :eyes: So you’re fine :joy:

And I’m glad that you have that confidence \o/ Sometimes I just realise that I’m reading some weird squiggles and here I am complaining that I may not fully understand some grammar :upside_down_face: :DDD And we’re reading the native manga now, but also the one with puns /o/

I also thought it was a bit too much for Absolute beginner, but we’re still reading it /o/ Even if some people left because it was too difficult, they can always go back to the threads when they want to read it \o/ Just reminding about that again:3

Why is the a-stem of 怖がる (怖がら) used together with (what I presume is) a contracted する?

EDIT: actually, I think it’s a contracted 怖がらせる.

What do you make of the little author’s note (精一杯は伝わった)? What meaning of 伝わる is used and what is it referring to?

It’s meant for panda-kun trying really hard to be cool and wild like Grizzly!

In this context, it means something like:
(Not sure if you look cool or wild but) I understand how hard you’ve tried.
