Note this club is based on the originally published series. If you have the bis version the content will be mostly the same but there may be differences in page numbers and chapter titles

Vocabulary

Please read the guidelines on the first page before adding any words.

Live Readings

There is nothing currently set up but if anyone is interested feel free to mention and we can set something up in the Discord server.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions, someone else might be struggling with the same thing you are and its a great opportunity to help each other out!
  • Please mention the page number and book version (orig or bis) if you’re asking help on a specific section so people can find it easily.
  • You can search to see if someone has already asked your question!
  • Do join in with the conversation even just to share your thoughts on the current chapters.

Page Numbers
For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the eBook location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Proper Nouns

Picture Name English Notes
シロクマ Polar bear Main character, owner of the cafe
パンダ Panda Main character, lazy regular to the cafe
ペンギン Penguin Main character, regular to the cafe

Discussion Questions

  1. Who’s your favourite bear so far?
  2. What do you think of Polar bear’s puns?
  3. What do you think of the bears’ made-up names?

Not entirely sure if I’m meant to read 雑誌にもよく載ってるんだ literally? As in, these are famous people who appear in magazines?

Not the people-- Panda is still talking about the cafe here.

Oh I see, the café is often in magazines so cool people go there. Since he was talking about お客さん in the previous sentence I assumed it was still the topic.

I think the keys are the も~ も~ structure and the use of し, which can be translated as “and also”. Panda is not so much talking about the guests as listing them as one of the appealing things about the cafe.

See: 〜し for "Not Only…but Also…"

Isn’t the panda the one doing all the puns?

Ah technically yes but polar bear is the one who sets up the scene for panda to say the pun for him mini spoiler(?) for ahead, polar bear does this with a lot of characters, he’s sort of the initiator of acting out the pun and the other characters are like “alright I’ll play along” and say it out loud for him

Cute chapters! I skipped over a lot of the inserts when I read it before, but the コーヒープレス tutorial on page 4 of the original print was fun too, I gotta pay more attention to these this time

Enjoying reading this again. Love the puns, a real USP of the manga. One thing I loved this week was the fishing jackets they wear on their fishing trip, it’s a cool look for a bear!

Now I feel like I’m missing out!

Same! @javerend Could you possibly upload a picture of said tutorial? I’m super curious.

This is the first time I’ve joined a book club ever and I’m really enjoying it!

I’ve only read the first chapter so far since it’s taking me a long time to understand what’s being said but I’m really liking it so far! Panda and Polar bear were really funny when panda was saying all those homophones. Polar bear is very funny!

I have a question though, what was panda saying about the sugar on the last panel of page 6 (orig)? From the context of the next page I’m guessing he’s saying something about not wanting/needing sugar?

Excellent, learned something in the first frame. V(te) bakari

Mine’s on page 58: しろくまレシピ (1) コーヒーをいれる
There are more throughout the book, but I won’t spoil it
(looks like I have a 2nd printing in 2017, if I’m deciphering the last page correctly)

Here you go! (this is the same method I learned to make french press coffee)

Welcome to Wanikani forums @japax! Glad you are enjoying the book.

You’re right, he’s saying sugar is not needed. He’s using いらない from the verb いる meaning “to need”. いらない is a way of declining something offered in Japanese (there are obviously politer ways!)

Ooh, I read it as being from 入る (as in, don’t put it in the coffee) but that makes more sense. I wasn’t familiar with this idiom.

I forgot how adorable and clever these were :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I really like panda’s reversible pseudonym

Just in case anyone isn’t aware, Japanese children play with letter writing and combine it with songs and drawing things. So you memorise a little ditty and if you draw the characters in the order you sing them you make a face or something. Here is an explanation of the famous one on polar bear’s face へのへのもへじ  and another one.

From a AJALT book called Wadaiko

And don’t forget to look for the little one line jokes/ comments at the bottom of the last page of each chapter

I was curious about how they handled the puns in the English version:

I am unimpressed.
