Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ใƒใ‚ฟใƒใƒฌ. If youโ€™re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current weekโ€™s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I donโ€™t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current weekโ€™s reading (including trigger warnings that havenโ€™t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the โ€œHide Detailsโ€ or โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ options. The text which says โ€œThis text will be hiddenโ€ should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of โ€œHide Detailsโ€, the section in the brackets that is labelled โ€œSummaryโ€ can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=โ€Chapter 1, Pg. 1โ€]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the โ€œHide Detailsโ€ option.

The โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

This is an example of the โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ option.

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasnโ€™t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select โ€œin this topicโ€. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! Itโ€™s fun, and itโ€™s what keeps these book clubs lively! Thereโ€™s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, thereโ€™s a very good chance it has crossed somebody elseโ€™s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Hey all! Apologies for the thread being a little late. I havenโ€™t had time to fill out the vocabulary sheet yet, so if any community members would like to contribute that would be appreciated. Otherwise, Iโ€™ll start filling it out on Monday.

I tried to add the vocab for ใ—ใซใŒใฟ ; I might not have been as thorough tho.
We have ใคใ a couple of times with different kinds of meanings. For one of them I wasnโ€™t entirely sure if I picked the right one :woman_shrugging:

You can also think of it as a non-literal โ€˜attach/stick toโ€™ because someone accompanying someone else is โ€˜sticking to themโ€™

I only now got around to read ๅฑฑใญใ“ใฎ ใฐใ‘ใ‚‚ใฎ and there were a couple of sentences where I struggles with the vocab, but this time around I just had the vocab sheet open for a change (so didnโ€™t really try without). Grammar note for the picky readers who want to know everything:

ใพใถใ—ใ„ ใปใฉใซ

ใปใฉ means โ€˜extentโ€™

Literal:

You could just say โ€˜candles were burning,โ€™ but the ใปใฉ here marks just how far something goes, usually describing an extreme. So many candles! So much burning!

A short while ago, you turned the futon and saved the patient.

This is your question from the other thread about when Mohei shared his life force. It was when he turned the futon and went against the natural rules of life and death- that patient was supposed to die but didnโ€™t.

Page 74 Sentence 1

ใชใ‚“ใจใ‹ ใ†ใคใ—ใพใ—ใŸ

ใชใ‚“ใจใ‹
somehow or another

ใ†ใคใ—ใพใ—ใŸ

it transferred.

Mohei is narrating how heโ€™s trying to transfer the flame from his almost-burnt-out candle to the new candle. Heโ€™s worried because he doesnโ€™t want to die, so his hands are shaking. But in the end of this sentence he manages to do it.

Page 74 Sentence 3

Yes, to break it down even further on how we get there:

ใ‚‚ใ† ใ„ใกใฉ
one more time

ใŠใพใˆใฏ
You

ใ„ใใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹
potential form of ใ„ใใ‚‹ to live- to be able to live.

@CherryApple Do you have any more questions about the ending of the story?

Thanks for explaining my mistakes. I think I understand the Plot of the Story now.

Mohei was pitying himself for being poor. Then He Met a Shinigami who suggested making Money by kniwing which Patient is going to die and which Not. He offered Money to the Shinigami of the patients who should have died but also lost some of His life force every time. The First Shinigami Shows him the candles which represent the life force of every human. He also Shows him the candles of His wife and child and His own, that is very short. He then transferres the fire of His own candle to a new one but accidentally blew it Out. I assume that He is dead now.

Not quite, the scam is this:

  1. Know whether a patient will live or die (by being able to see the shinigami)
  2. If they will live, Mohei โ€œhealsโ€ them (claps his hands)
  3. He then takes money from the families of the patients, as payment for the โ€œhealing.โ€
  4. If they will die, Mohei just says โ€œthereโ€™s nothing to be doneโ€ and leaves, which means he doesnโ€™t get paid.

What happens at the end of the story is that he comes across a very rich patient who he knows will die. He wants the money (he doesnโ€™t get money when they die) so he turns the futon of the patient so the Shinigami is on the opposite side. The patient lives, but because he turned the futon and interfered, Moheiโ€™s life force is depleted. So this is the only time he gives his life force.
He probably could have continued on scamming if he hadnโ€™t gotten greedy.

Then yes you got the candle part correct.

Note that ใงใ‚ใฃใŸ is modifying ใ‚‚ใฎ, so โ€˜the thing that they metโ€™
ใ‚‚ใฎ is the topic (marked with ใฏ) so:

Literal: The thing that the brothers met when going to the mountains to search for their friendsโ€ฆ

Natural: The brothers went searching for their friends on the mountain, and met somethingโ€ฆ

Page 75 Sentence 1

ใ‚ใ‚‹ ใ‚€ใ‚‰ใซ is the same kind of thing as the first couple of stories which started with ใ‚ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ใซใ€ an equivalent of โ€˜once upon a time.โ€™ ใ‚ใ‚‹ใ‚€ใ‚‰ใซ would probably be phrased differently in English, but I assume itโ€™s just a continuation of the folk story/fable type of writing style. Maybe like In a village on a mountainโ€ฆ

Then, ใใ‚‰ใ™ is kind of like how one spends their day-to-day life. Itโ€™s connected to ใ‚„ใพใง ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚’ ใ—ใฆ, so itโ€™s describing that they spend their day-to-day life hunting on the mountain.

The whole thing is also constructed as a noun phrase.

In a village/in a certain village, there were brothers / brothers lived

What kind of brothers?

ใ‚ใ‚‹ ใ‚€ใ‚‰ใซใ€ใ‚„ใพใง ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚’ ใ—ใฆ ใใ‚‰ใ—ใฆ ใ„ใ‚‹ ใใ‚‡ใ†ใ ใ„ใŒ ใ„ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

Natural:
In a certain village, there lived two brothers who spent their days hunting on the mountain.

Page 75 Sentence 2

Letโ€™s break this down by looking at the beginning and the end.

ใตใŸใ‚Šใฏใ€[โ€ฆ] ใใ ใกใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

Remember to connect the current sentence to the previous sentence. We were just talking about brothers, so ใตใŸใ‚Š is probably not describing two entirely new people- itโ€™s referring to the same brothers.

The two of them [โ€ฆ] were raised.

Ok, so now we have an idea that the sentence might be talking about how they were raised.

Working backwards:

ใ“ใ‚ใ„ ใฏใชใ—ใ‚’ ใใ„ใฆ

Hearing scary stories

[ ใ‚„ใพใง ใŠใใŸ ] ใตใ—ใŽใช ใงใใ”ใจใ‚„
