Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

(Pretty much all of the recent comments mention this manga, I notice.)

Page 135 first panel, what exactly is the reading for ✕2? エックス? タイムズ? にばい?

In Digimon Xros Wars (the only other place I can immediately recall seeing something like that written), it’d pronounced “クロスツー”, though considering デジクロス is also the power-up activation phrase, that reading might just be thematic rather than typical.

Done with this week’s reading. It felt easier than last week, the situations were a bit more straightforward.

Story thoughts:

I’m glad that we’ve moved into a new phase of the story, where the two girls are together again (and being somewhat awkward about it). The top half is p.122 is a drawing style that we haven’t seen in a while, I’ve missed it.
The interaction on p. 129 was hilarious, with Aya’s “I was into her first” attitude.

p. 131

Why is Koga-san so startled here? Are they late for PE class because they were listening to music together? Koga-san says あっち側に行くとこだった (I was just about to go over there), and Aya says あぶない. Not sure how to place all this in the proper context.

Also, I can’t quite make out the handwritten text at the bottom of the page:
なにこの○○?

Them being so absorbed in the music they forgot about PE class is how I interpreted it, yes.

The handwritten text I’m not too sure about, it looks like 空向 to me, but the only thing I can find is there are some people who use that as an online handle, so I doubt that’s it

Neither of them cared about PE. The problem was that the music was so good they almost died. あっち側 = the other side, in the figurative sense. The other side of the River Sanzu, the afterlife, sort of thing.

空間. The 冂 with a line through it is a 略字 form for the 門 radical.

Ah, I see. They’re really into their music, aren’t they? :open_mouth:

Oh, thanks for that. I think I knew about the use of these types of simplified characters, but I don’t think I’d ever seen them in the wild like this (except for 才 instead of 歳, I suppose).

…and that was the last club I had to catch up to! Finally I’m up to date everywhere

(Now I gotta keep myself from just finishing it up…)

Man, page 121/122 really is Mitsuki’s duality perfectly condensed.

Also:

He continues to be a representation of the reader

Whaaat? That’s the least amount of awkward interaction we had since the beginning! I’m so glad they are just casually hanging out in the CD shop, sitting on the floor and talking, and doing stuff together in school. It’s such a major step up from before :smiling_face_with_tear:

Bit early this week as I’m busy later on :airplane:

Nothing wrong with early. Since it’s the Easter weekend, I have today off work, so I’ve got some time on my hands. :slightly_smiling_face:

I was just thinking to spend some time today to read ahead for tomorrow’s start of week 9. Perfect this way.

This week’s section was cute, I like that Aya knows her identity and I like seeing them actually hanging out.

Has anyone made a playlist for this manga yet? :grinning:

I put one in the initial thread I think, but you can always just listen to Radiohead - creep as a starter

actually, looks like warner music have just announced a soundtrack LP release

I would say the chances of an anime are pretty high tbh

Tracklist:

  • Heart shaped box / Nirvana
  • Walk this way / Aerosmith
  • Higher Ground / Red Hot Chilli Peppers
  • Loser / Beck
  • Black Hole Sun / Soundgarden
  • You Give Love A Bad Name / Bon Jovi
  • Coping Mechanism / Willow
  • Say It Ain’t So / Weezer
  • Shine / Collective Soul
  • Mister Brightside / The Killers

Phoar, what a list! No Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead though. Also honestly, I prefer the Run DMC/Aerosmith version of Walk This Way, but that might break Mitsuki’s brain
