I still donโ€™t understand this Sentence.

What? If itโ€™s this Kind of face. That face? This face? Not to know I give a pinch once.

How would this Sound more natural?
Does giving a pinch mean the one you do to yourself when you think your dreaming and want to wake Up?

In one of the earlier Stories the Word for Gossip/rumour was combined with another Word to a new Word. But I donโ€™t know which Stories it was.

Sounds better than my translation.

I really hate it that there are so many words that have so many completely different meanings.

Rough:

({(Kazefukitougeใจcalled, lonely)mountain pass}

Clean:

Apparently, on the outskirts of a certain Village, there was a lonely mountain pass called โ€œKazefukitougeโ€.

Kazefukitouge is
Kaze = ้ขจ wind
Fuki = ๅนใ blowing
Touge = ๅณ  mountain pass

Which brings us directly back to:

Yes, ใจใŠใ‚‹ can mean โ€œto pass throughโ€
One place I study says โ€œOf courseโ€ is ใใฎใจใŠใ‚Š=ใใฎ้€šใ‚Šโ€ฆ And also ้€šใ‚Š can be a roadโ€ฆ
And Man! ้€šใ‚‹ has so SO many meanings!

But I think in this case, ใชใพใˆใฎใจใŠใ‚Š means โ€œas the name saysโ€
In this entry for ใจใŠใ‚Š=้€šใ‚Š, it is meaning 7. I think youโ€™ll see start noticing ใจใŠใ‚Š around often as you consume content, in places where it means โ€œin that wayโ€โ€ฆ
Then the sentence means: As the name says, the wind blows through the mountain pass.

You are right that ใใ‚‹ใใฆ means (itโ€™s) dark and โ€ฆ Itโ€™s the ใ„ Adjective ใฆ connecting form.
โ€ฆTofugu on ใ„Adj and ใ

Here where I pulled the ่ฆ‹ใ‚‹โ†’ without looking ่ฆ‹ใšใซ fromโ€ฆ This grammar point where ใš substitute for ใชใ„ as the negative form
BunPro Verb-ใš

The ใพใˆ I think itโ€™s a mumbled, flustered version of him calling the ไบบใ‹ใ’ โ€œใŠใพใˆโ€, but he left off the honorific ใŠโ€ฆ
โ€ฆใŠๅ‰ (ใŠใพใˆ you; used to be honorific, now quite casual N3 Anime Top 100 )

So then that section โ€œใใ‚‹ใใฆใพใˆใฟใšใซโ€ could mean (Itโ€™s) dark and (I) didnโ€™t see youโ€ฆ

(Which is BS, because he was scared, and charged into them on purpose, like a battering ram, but kept looking at the ground, so he could say โ€œOopsy!โ€ for a purposeful act)

Re. Page 132, sentence 1:
Interesting to me, an Internet search of โ€œJapanese grammar ใŠใ† sentence endโ€
brought up this 2018 Wanikani forum thread (!!) which seems directly pertinent! I guess itโ€™s kind of an ancient ghost sentence ending particle?

All that casual speech with the ใ˜ใ‚ƒโ€™s Iโ€™m not certain about โ€ฆ
I know for sure that โ€œNounใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„โ€ means โ€œit isnโ€™t Nounโ€โ€ฆ So then that seems to support your instinct that โ€œNounใ˜ใ‚ƒโ€ is like โ€œNounใ โ€โ€ฆ

I do know that ใช as a sentence-ending particle is wondering, thinking, musing, and that the ใ‚ is item drawn out to show longer thought/musingโ€ฆ So I think thatโ€™s what ใชใ‚ is doing in p.133 sentence 3โ€ฆ
Example: JLPT Sensei on ใชใ‚

This Renshuu discussion of ใ˜ใ‚ƒ and ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚ was interesting {especially the part about ใจใซใ‹ใ(anyway) being derived from an old adage ๅ…Žใซ่ง’ (rabbitใซhorns)!} โ€ฆ But it didnโ€™t seem to address what weโ€™re struggling with
I just shrugged and gave up after concluding, as you did, that it didnโ€™t seem negativeโ€ฆ

This is Stack Exchange on sentence-ending ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚, and they sound pretty authoritativeโ€ฆ
OK, I canโ€™t focus at the moment to try to apply that to these sentences. sigh!
I think they said that ใ˜ใ‚ƒ is always short for ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ (when itโ€™s where that might have been), and that broke my brain at the moment! :sweat_smile:

PLUS my friend who is teaching English in Japan mentioned a school-kid language trend of ending things with ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚“ (really loud) (are Japanese starting to do โ€œsarcasmโ€?) (in theโ€™80s, we would say something and then after a reaction began, say not!)

You did REALLY GREAT on your interpretations, CherryAppleใ•ใ‚“ :star_struck: :+1:
I feel like a LOT of people (1) do not try to restate what they read in English and (2) do not try to understand every single word and every single particle. They just go โ€œUh huhโ€ฆI think I get the gistโ€ and keep blasting through content.

Me, I like breaking it down, because someday, I want to speak naturally in Japaneseโ€ฆ So I feel like I need to understand the choices of including a sound (particle, word, conjugation, formality level, ai yi yi!!)โ€ฆ I call that โ€œintensive Japanese studyโ€, and do some every month, but not a whole lotโ€ฆ Itโ€™s exhaustingใญใ‡ใ‡

I felt like maybe that sentence-beginning ใง is a casually-shortened version of ใงใฏ (โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€)

Oh, thank goodness! Since itโ€™s only my 2nd story in this book, I thought it was โ€œtypicalโ€!

BTW, AWR, I think you nailed the interpretation of the encounter in the mountain pass! inter alia

I once read a comic strip (I think it was in The New Yorker, but I couldnโ€™t find it online) where a man and a woman nearly ran into each other rounding a city cornerโ€ฆ He moved left to avoid at the same time she dodged in the same directionโ€ฆ So then he moved right to give way, but she had also adjusted course to the same direction. And then they tangoed it was called "streetcorner dance* โ€ฆ Very well done!

For me with the previous chapters it felt like:

  • too hard
  • a bit easier because I learned Something
  • too hard again

If you Play Videogames I would describes it as this: I Just started the Game and the monsters have a higher Level than my Charakter. Then my Character Levels Up and the Game becomes easier. But then the monsters get suddenly a big Level Up and I struggle again to Fight them.
