We kept bouncing off the first hundred kanji ourselves, so we built the thing we wanted: something that shows you the strokes in order, lets you trace them, and doesn’t ask you to pay before you know whether it helps.
100 Kanji is a free iOS app covering the N5 starter set. It has stroke-order animation for each character at a speed you can actually follow, trace quizzes so you draw it rather than just recognise it, spoken readings for both on’yomi and kun’yomi, and a home-screen widget with the kanji of the day. No account, no subscription, no ads.
It is deliberately small. It does the first hundred and stops. If you are past N5 this almost certainly isn’t for you, and we would rather say that up front than waste your download.
We built it and we maintain it, so this is our own thing we’re sharing. Happy to take the criticism if the stroke data or the readings are off anywhere, that’s the part we most want to get right.
