Hi all! I’ve been a Wanikani user for a few months and I recently discovered I could use Kanji Study to learn the stroke order of the kanji. I have created personalized groups in Kanji Study so I could study the stroke order based on Wanikani levels and not the default groups given by the app. I have seen that Kanji Study also does SRS, but before getting it as an extra extension, I wanted to ask if you can customise it so you’re only queried on the customized groups and not on the Kanji Study default groups. My goal is to be able to study stroke order but following Wanikani’s structure so I don’t get confused studying different sets of kanji at a time. Many thanks for your help!!
I don’t know the answer - but thanks for reminding me that I was planning to get the Kanji Study app for my tablet
Edit: deleted some stuff since Kokinshu knows more
The app is super helpful for referencing kanji. Make sure your default layout is set to your custom set and then if you use the Kanji Study app like a dictionary, when you click on the word and then the kanji you can see where it is on your custom set (eg, WK).
I’m not sure if I understood your question right but, you can totally choose yourself which kanji you want to put in the SRS. If you already made your personalized groups, you have to keep your finger on the kanji for a second or two and then a little window will appear : you will have the option to add the kanji (or to remove it) in the SRS.
edit : to be faster, you can keep your finger on 1 kanji, and then choose “Select the character” before selecting all the kanji of the group, and then you press the three little dots in the superior right angle and select the option to add them in the SRS.
You absolutely don’t have to follow the order given by the app ; in fact, in the parameters of the SRS window, you can even choose “0 daily new kanji” or something like that, to stop it from appearing on the screen. You can choose to only add kanji yourself from your personalized groups.
Your response prompted me to try it again and I found all sorts of options I didn’t realise were there
This is not obvious and I never noticed this thanks!
So I played with it from scratch now that it looks more useful, and as far as I understand if I set the automatic srs to 0 daily new, then it will only show me the ones I add manually? Interestingly I see it doesn’t add them as new cards for today, it scheduled them with the soonest review tomorrow.
I wondered if it will add cards where I manually use the study tool, this seems to be no unless I use the migration option. Otherwise, I need to manually add them using the processes you mentioned.
Do you have any insight on what it means for kanji to be filtered out (maybe since I’m on the free version those are just kanji it’s not going to show me for now? ). It’s not the same as ignored.
I have to say it looks more interesting then when I first tried it out when it was released, but it’s hard to get my head around how to best use it now that I’m further along.
What app is that!?
I need that, cant find it
Glad I could help !
Yes, that’s exactly that.
In the SRS parameters, there is an option when you can choose to use the exact studying time of the kanji so you don’t have to wait at least a day for studying it. I like the fact that there are a lot of options to personnalize it, you can also reset everything if you want a fresh start.
I’m honestly not sure because I don’t remember having seen that sentence before but yes I think it’s because of the free version, the SRS probably doesn’t allow other kanji that the ones who are provided for free.
It’s true that if you are already using an other method for kanji, it might be repetitive and overwhelming to use a second SRS ; but I think that if you focus only on the kanji that are the most difficult for you, it could be useful again. The writing practice, and the KKLC sentences for reading it in context are so useful, I remember when I started I had a hard time with this kanji : 曜 ; but when I just wrote it again and again, the muscle memory finally ingrained it in my brain
But right now I’m taking a break from it, I’m honestly tired of always being in front of a screen for my Japanese practice. I will just focus on WaniKani right now, and if I need to practice writing I will just do it with a pencil and some paper
6000+ kanji for a very low price (you can practice the kana and 100 kanji with the free version), writing practice, SRS (not free unfortunately) with a nice Tanuki that evolves like a Pokemon, no subscriptions, and several add-ons (a little bit expensive but very useful). An amazing Japanese learning tool !
