that’s weird, i don’t see anything like that for me. definitely just the first chapter though, it’s only 74 pages (when the full volume is somewhere in the 200s)

There are two versions available for free currently: One is the full manga but it is time-limited (until May 15th iirc) and one is just the first chapter but without time limit.
I guess that explains why your and @polv’s experiences don’t match

@curiousjp I wonder if you can make a Google Sheet that makes it easier to browse the long “details” post (esp. on mobile)? As long as a filter can be made, it isn’t that hard to browse limited time deals.
Furthermore, I am not sure about differences between “Fiction” (文芸・小説) and “Light Novels (ライトノベル)”. In any case, they are what I tried to get into, rather than simply “Manga” (マンガ) with speech clouds.

Fiction is the same genre as it is in English. ライトノベル is also a genre and it maps most closely to YA or Young Adult for English books.
Edit: I went and checked Bookwalker, and these are the genres (ジャンル) that they have listed, although they’re more like tags than anything:

This is where the confusion arises
It is translated in the App, but not in bookwalker.jp website (and pretty sure first tab of the app is also website, i.e. WebView)
BTW, Bookwalker JP made it inconsistent - supposed to be ジャンル.
There aren’t that many Tag’ifed genres, though. Seems like about 10. - ラノベ (ライトノベル); マンガ; 文芸 (文芸・小説); 実用; 新書; ゲーム; 画集; 写真集; 新文芸
Also, some non-genres - 特典; 完結 - though these don’t become カテゴリ, but rather Tags with bookmark symbol.

I wonder if it can also be filtered by カテゴリ, or more exactly, things like 小説 or ラノベ? (or maybe 実用, which is sometimes Manga style, sometimes Text style)
Also, add a filter in advance (and saved before sharing)?

Hi polv,
Unfortunately, I’m not quite sure what you mean here - if you mean “you seem to have already filtered it to remove 小説 etc. before saving it”, yes, that’s right. The program that filters the lists only deals with the manga category. Part of this is a holdover from when I was using mangaupdates as my source for ratings / tags, etc. Anilist (the current provider) does include records for ラノベ, although I’m not sure what their coverage is like. I don’t think they carry 小説.
I can think about expanding it, although it will need some thought about how to disambiguate series that share a title between their original forms and their manga adaptions.
Instead of doing my homework or dealing with my problems I play a Sci-Fi MMO FPS thing called “Destiny 2” about post-apocalyptic magical zombies that serve the unknowable whims of an alien golf-ball suspended in the sky above South America. The glowy stuff on my head is showing that I had the highest score for the current time limited event out of everyone in the social space I was in.

Yeah, I wasn’t going to comment on this until I had had a bit more time to look into it, but I’m still not entirely sure how 魔導師は平凡を望む even ended up in the list - there were also a handful of other novels that showed up in it as well unexpectedly (and actually caused a data model violation the first time as they didn’t have a series associated with them).
I normally generate the starting list from this url - 0円、配信予定を除く、セール・期間限定価格の電子書籍無料試し読みならBOOK☆WALKER - which most weeks seems to be entirely manga, but it seems it is not a rule that it has to be entirely manga - as you can see right now, there are seven 新文芸 items in there if you hit the filter on the left side (which drops you here). But those seven are only scraping the surface of the free stuff in the 文芸/ラノベ categories, so I’m not sure how they ended up there - and unfortunately my Japanese just isn’t good enough to tease it out by reading the site (at least quickly.)

A lot of those results are fake, though, especially in the ラノベ category. They are usually half manga preview half extended light novel previews and get hidden by the セール・期間限定価格 condition (which only returns real full books).
If I only use 0円、セール・期間限定価格, I do get

However, the free light novels I checked are ALL free extra collector stuff you only get for buying the associated novel. 配信予定を除く does remove those weird stuff, only leaving “real” free books. One thing I have noticed is that light novel are almost never free to keep, which is why you don’t see them often, but they do exist. 本好き 1 has been free to keep a few times in the past, for instance.
TL;DR: you select for free to keep (full) “books” (some stuff are just independent chapters…), which tends to be mostly manga. However, light novels happen to be given away as well, but very rarely.
