Reading Vol. 12・ふらいんぐうぃっち・Flying Witch (Beginner Book Club) 🧹

In the true spirit of Flying Witch, the book club members are equally chill, haha

It sounds like everybody is low-key keen to keep going with Volume 4 - and I’m assuming most people would favour a start date right after Volume 3 (perhaps with a one-week break). I’ll make a thread for volume 4, but then perhaps somebody here could volunteer to do the weekly ‘discussion start’ posts? I can guarantee I’ll forget some weeks otherwise

I’m really a terrible candidate for this (generally disorganized and forgetful) - but if there are no volunteers then I can do the weekly participation polls

(Although I have no idea about when people would want to start volume 4 - there are quite a lot of book clubs coming up :woman_shrugging:)

Gotta be started and finished before June, or else we risk a mid-air collision between Makoto and Kiki.

This is not an actual timeline suggestion.

I think I’d pay money to see that particular crossover.

And I just realized, I’m reading three manga that all have a character named Makoto in them. (Flying Witch, Sailormoon, and Rental Oniichan.)

When do you want to start volume 4? (some suggestions)

  • 16th May (directly after volume three)
  • 23rd May (one week break after volume three)*
  • 13th June (directly after Laid-Back Camp ends)
  • 20th June (one week after Laid-Back Camp ends)
  • defer decision until later in the year

*does involve a one-week overlap with Kiki!

Nice! I’ll put a thread up for the 16th of May then :slightly_smiling_face: and probably will plan to put one up six weeks later for volume 5 too, unless people specifically ask for a break

Volume 4 thread is ready to go!

Somebody needs to volunteer to post the weekly discussion start posts / participation polls starting next week - you can just copy directly from the volume 3 thread. Please reply here to confirm if you can do it!

Also, there will be no page numbers / page counts for this volume unless somebody can be bothered to give me the last page number of each chapter, but I think you’re all on eBooks anyway

Everyone still happy and ready to go straight into volume 4 next week?

Thanks for setting all this up :slightly_smiling_face:

Ch. 22 - end pg 104

I can post the chapter polls and update the OP if no one else volunteers

What time do you usually post them?
(Other readers: if I’m late posting a poll, feel free to post one!)

Thanks

For next week, I’d post around 2020-05-15T19:00:00Z. Basically just aiming to get it up ~Saturday morning in Japan.

I’m so happy we keep this up. Even if I don’t use the thread a lot for questions because I use the manga to just read and not stress out about not understanding 100%. So I guess I don’t have questions I might otherwise have. But just knowing there are some people who also read this each week is a nice motivation boost and (it’s fun, too). :+1:

I’m enjoying this series so much that I think I’ll keep reading all the volumes until either I get bored of it or they stop publishing it  The slow pace and beautiful scenery is kind of like a relaxing holiday (I only found out today that most of the scenes are based on real landscapes and buildings), and it’s comfortable to read something nice within my reading ability.

Thank you for creating this book club, I probably wouldn’t have discovered this series on my own!

This seems to be fairly common. I’ve seen photos showing places from よつばと!, 三ツ星カラーズ, and of course アリア. I always find it enjoyable seeing comparisons between a drawn scene and a photo of the actual location =D

Yotsuba is slightly the odd one out in that list, because though real places were certainly used as the inspiration for locations in the manga, the manga’s locations are not explicitly those places. Flying Witch, Mitsuboshi Colours, Aria, Yuru Camp, et cetera, and so forth, are all actually set in the locations they appear to be, so you can literally go there and visit the same areas.

Well… for Aria, at least, you can visit Old Venice. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can follow Elon Musk to Mars Neo Venezia if you want. :stuck_out_tongue:

I accidentally started the discussion about Vol. 5 in the Vol. 4 thread - sorry about that! I’m trying to make up for this by continuing here

I’m assuming that we are indeed continuing with Flying Witch; so the most interesting question is: When do we start?
In the past, we had a long (2.5 month) break after Vol. 1, a two-week break after Vol. 2, and no break after Vol. 3. If we want to continue this trend, we should have started last week already :joy_cat:

Now, seriously. I have no idea how many of you already have the full series and/or read it as ebook, and how the chances are for getting books from Japan (I’m hearing mixed reports…)

To figure all of this out, I’ve prepared a little poll :upside_down_face:

  • Immediately after Vol. 4 is finished (i.e. June 27th)
  • I’d prefer a one-week break (i.e. July 4th)
  • I need more time (please specify in the thread)
