Overall good progress except that I skimmed through roughly 20 boxes when the MC summarised the current political situation. I have deciphered it before but didn’t understand all of it back then and I didn’t feel like fully comprehending it today either. Just didn’t have the patience for it since I’m feeling rather down. Maybe the third time’s a charm when I encounter this part again in another playthrough.
Not a particularly useful for future me update but I read every day (even today- colors and then JoJo after I finish my reviews). I’ve finished vol 10 of SBR. I put in little sticky notes to track my practice overnight. If future me wants to go back and count the pages, I should be able to. I think I finished it Sunday night? So between then and the previous post I did all that reading iirc.
I’ll be hella busy but I hope to read a lot this year. Oh and also I’ll probably make the next season’s thread in 2-3 weeks
finished the last two chapters of sherdock and it was a super uncomfy plotline and i hated it! terrible note to end on! wanted to read more psycho-pass than i did, especially cos i know i won’t have time tomorrow, but oh well. needed to find a kanji and jisho’s search wasn’t working with me, had to use kanjipedia instead. for eng book i’m gonna attempt seven sisters by lucinda riley, even tho i’m very much not the target audience. i ended up with a copy and feel bad getting rid of it without trying it first.
Depends on what you mean by new and old. You mentioned in your post that you’ve re-read some previous manga – was that something you’ve read long in the past or just the other day?
I rarely do re-reads, at least not much with Japanese content. I’ve only reread the novels わたしの幸せな結婚 1, 2 and 6 which I had read one year prior, in order to prepare for book 7 which was going to be released soon.
I tend to look up close to every word I’m unsure about. Call it intensive reading if you’d like, it doesn’t feel particularly feel like that to me, just normal. (I’m referring to the topic of intensive vs extensive reading.) I’m reading for entertainment and I don’t think I would enjoy having to read something twice unless I very much enjoyed the book (which I did for わたしの幸せな結婚). Though I also wouldn’t enjoy not fully understanding what I was reading either, which is why I tend to look up pretty much all words I’m unsure about. I’m genuinely curious about new words. That’s why at this point I don’t have to do as much lookups as before. Depends on the series and genre, but I go longer stretches sometimes pages until I find a word I feel like I want/have to look up. And sometimes I do 5+ lookups on just one page. It varies a lot.
As for when I did reread わたしの幸せな結婚, I had to look up a lot of words, but way fewer than during the first time.
I feel like understanding grammar and the overall sentence structure is more important to picking up nuance than just understanding vocab, but that could be just my experience. Though it depends on the vocab too, some words have certain connotations compared to their synonyms, so that’s also an important part of nuance. One can’t always learn everything about a word just from a single lookup, after all. Sometimes it takes several lookup of the same word in different contexts. That’s also why I’d rather read a lot of different text than, say, try to remember or SRS a vocab list to perfection. Looking up a ton of words is good SRS in and of itself, in my opinion
If I reread something, it’s for the story/plot (I tend to mark my favorite scenes with green highlight on bookwalker where I’m certain I’m going to want to read it again. I have quite a few of those in for example Honzuki or romance books, ehehe ). I’ve reread quite a few of my favorite scenes from Honzuki now that I think about it
Finally wrapped a long investigation segment in 蘇る逆転。I gave up and consulted a hint book because I got tired of trying to figure out what the game wanted from me, turned out to be something simple.
Started a (simple) LN, 少女マンガじゃない! 1, which was quite a relief after エルフさん - much easier (and shorter), and seems like it’ll be easier to dip in and out of.
February 17
I read ten pages Dーダーク・ロード 2―吸血鬼ハンター 11. There is some fighting and the book gets more and more interesting. Of course I would read more if it was easier but even just ten pages is good progress.
All familiar parts today which allowed for faster progress.
I’m fairly certain that I’ll have an amusing session tomorrow as one of the silliest scenes is about to take place.
