Speaking of which, now confirmed that I’ll be flying for 25 hours during the next readathon… This is either going to be the worst or best day of reading japanese in my life. Or quite possibly both at the same time.
waaaa (//u//) I thought this was going to be a slow burn romance. Turns out the start was super slow for a reason. …Is this why there are 10 books in this series?!?
What a bliss, having a chance to read the whole day long… A lot happened in the chapters I read. It looks like we’ll see again this albino girl at some point. The future will be likely a lot about opium as well, not only grasshoppers. And Maomao got another hairpin. If only she stopped being ignorant about what it means.
Continuing the first trial segment for case 5, didn’t quite get through the first witnesses’ evidence. She has an annoying habit of speaking in kana instead of using kanji for words I already know, but I guess it’s good practice for recognising them based on the kana…
Slowly getting through Frieren. This volume is kind of simultaneously a drag… but I’m glad I watched the anime first, because it’s making it easier to decipher the somewhat meh panelling.
I was able to read everyday of this week, still super busy but I was able to make the time!! It really helps having a physical copy of Maison Ikkoku to read when I cant use the phone. MI is def on the harder end of books for me to read if only bc of all the brand new words but i can follow along well enough with the translated version next to it; and I am learning a lot of useful words (retaining them is another thing but at least i have some exp with them now). I gotta hop over to the library this week to grab vol 3 of maisson ikkoku!
For SR I’m close to catching up with Yuyu’s podcast and still working on the summer Story; not sure if I’ll start a new story once I’m caught up with Yuyu or just go through their Grammar in a Nutshell Series while I finish the short stories series~
Had a really good day of reading yesterday. Managed to complete the first story in the light novel I’m reading, made progress with Phantom Busters and also started Look Back ahead of the club because all my other books I’m reading are physical and I wanted something digital I could read on the couch last night.
I originally only had one of my goals for this year to read one light novel, but having managed to get through 20 pages over the weekend with fairly little pain, I’m feeling more optimistic about this. I’m tempted to give 君の名は a go once I’ve finished my current one (which will probably be around start of May?), as it’s been sat on my shelf since I started my Japanese journey back in 2023.
Think that’s novel number 3 for the challenge and number 5 for the year, assuming I remember how to count. I had more time than expected to read over the last few days around touristing. I still have the second volume to get through now as well, but I’m counting them as two books because, well, they’re 2 books. I’ll start with volume 2 when I get home in a day or two.
Very good novel. Reading it again in japanese now reminds me that it’s a quite un-murakami-ish novel, compared to his later stuff. Also, thankfully all the bits I don’t like as much are in the second volume, so I haven’t got to those yet. (Mostly the completely unnecessary section where わたなべ sleeps with レイコ, of course)
It’s also my highest level novel completed so far as according to natively - but it’s probably not the actual hardest. The gap between level 28 and 32 isn’t drastically bigger than any potential rounding error it feels like, and knowing the source material knocks it down a few pegs.
Anyway, onwards and upwards. Great pace for the year so far!
only a small amount of psycho-pass, i’m struggling to focus a bit today. as i have in previous challenges, i’m using a randomiser to help me get through my digital backlog and it gave me this forgettable but nicely drawn isekai manga adapted from a LN. the main character is a cat-person (with upsettingly human hands) and doesn’t have godly powers, which makes a change from isekai’s usual schtick. read the only three chapters of it i have, so it’s not going in the table.
edit: finished girl, woman, other, and what an excellent book. gah.
