Finished chapter 4 of hina chan, took notes again in my study log, I’m enjoying the process, it helps me really think about the sentences rather than skimming even if I get the general idea. Active reading™

  • Decided after wrapping Yuru Camp 2 I should jump to something easier… but failed, because テレワァク与太話 had no rating so I couldn’t really judge it effectively… my guess is it’s at least as difficult as Yuru Camp if not moreso, because the main character starts with a long set of complicated monologues and the secondary character speaks in kansai-ben! I think this is the Sweat and Soap author? I think it’s good though, I’m pretty drawn in already, and it’s a one shot so it’s relatively low investment. I’m going to plug away at it I guess.

Second month in . Daily logging has filled my home post, but keeping a single list has made it easier for me to check at a glance how the challenge has been going so far. This will be my home for :crossed_fingers: daily updates during May. Onwards!

Logs and thoughts
  1. Second attempt at Kiki-Mimi Radio on Satori, ‘easy’ version. Compared to last month, the first episode feels more approachable, but it’s still a steep jump from Sakura and Suzuki. I’m using all available options to make the experience more enjoyable, including adding spaces… for now.

  2. Five episodes in, and I’m slowly being drawn into the story. I was surprised to hear another actor voice one of the characters, besides the narrator. Word of the day 周り, the 5th synonym that I have learned for neighbourhood! Apparently there’s a 6th one waiting for me in level 40 :joy:.

  3. Reached episode 9 and it’s getting weird :face_with_spiral_eyes:. I wasn’t expecting anything surreal from the few comments people have posted about this series. Looking forward to the next development. The word of the day was one of my leeches from a recent level: 思わず == unintentionally . Let’s see if it sticks after seeing it in the wild!

  4. Read a couple more episodes. Episode 10 contains several sentences with no unknown vocabulary, so I can focus entirely on the grammar. Grammatical structure of the day: the “suffering passive”!

  5. The same sentence structures are repeated over the next 3 episodes. I managed to read once through episode 13 and got the gist of it, before I listened to the audio. Some words I recognized from an earlier Tadoku book, like カエル :frog:. Word of the day: 見回す I couldn’t find it in WK, but for once, it’s not too difficult to guess that it means to look around!

  6. Episode 14 had a few tricky sentences. I should spend a bit more time on Bunpro !

  7. A few more episodes in, and the story went from cheerful to unsettling. The suspense is growing :face_with_peeking_eye:. I’m bumping into more words that I understand because I recognise individual kanjis… but it turns out are not taught by WK, like this one: 予感 premonition

  8. I feel like shaking up the narrator for reacting so slowly and being so passive… beggars belief. I would have skipped the rest if I were reading in more familiar languages, but I’m enjoying the challenge of deciphering Japanese sentences and discovering common expressions. Word of the day 調子 state/condition/groove

  9. Finally the narrator is taking action. Kudos to the voice actors, it really adds to the experience… and how nice to realise that my long struggle with 役場 is finally paying off . One aspect of Satori reader that I particularly enjoy are the insights it gives into Japanese culture, and how that translates into the language. Word of the day: 防災無線 wireless disaster prevention system!

  10. Kiki Mimi Radio :white_check_mark: . First time seeing one of my most persistent leeches in the wild: 勝手. What a curse that the most “irregular” words are the most commonly used . I’ll take it as an incentive to read more!

  11. Back on Tadoku, level 3 book all about onsen. Lots of facts that put me in a nice lull…ready to sleep

  12. 4th (?) attempt at reading “Hole in the wall” on Satori. Being more familiar with the kanji should have made it easier to get through the first 2 episodes . Well, not so much after all! There’s an awful lot of kana that leaves me scratching my head. Some of it makes sense in hindsight あっという間 == a blink of time; the time it takes to say “Ah!” .

  13. Busy day, but managed one more episode. The story is great for learning about Japanese houses. Searched for 廊下 and got back delightful images.

  14. One more episode, this time I read through the whole page and got a few whole sentences right . It helps that the easy edition is quite repetitive. Kanji is now less of a hurdle than the kana vocabulary and grammar.

  15. Reached episode 7. Some good examples where knowing individual kanjis still leaves me clueless 目覚まし “eye memorize”?! Aha, 目覚める should pop up in my lessons in the next few days, hopefully I will remember to associate it with :alarm_clock: !

  16. Forced myself to go through one more episode. Is that really yet another term for ‘skillfull’? Nope, the notes say うまく is the adverbial form of うまい which I learned as 上手い, but totally failed to recognize from the hiragana spelling..

  17. Read 5 pages of Dr Slump on bilingualmanga and that’s way more fun than anything I’ve read before… completely zany  .

  18. Read this little gem on Tadoku: 蛙:frog:. Even in its very simplified form (lvl 3), I felt this must be the work of an established writer. Sure enough, the story is by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, the author of Rashōmon! I only knew of the eponymous film directed by Akira Kurozawa, but manga fans will recognize Ryūnosuke Akutawaga as the main character of Bungo Stray Dogs. The real person lived such a short life, it seems fitting that someone decided he should continue to live on in people’s imagination .

  19. Back to Hole in the wall on Satori, episode 10. The action is picking up, but it’s tricky to keep the suspense going when explanations for the term « to be sandwiched » is longer than the actual episode  . Read a few pages of Dr Slump vol 1. Very few kanjis, but the entertainment factor is so much higher.

  20. Two more episodes on Satori. Even with all the crutches, it’s a time consuming exercise to go through each sentence several times. Kanjis from the current WK level are popping up, which is always satisfying… plus I get a free refresher for my next review!

  21. Managed a few sentences on Satori without the translator. First time seeing 初めてin the wild :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:. Dr. スランプ is hilarious. Most words are written in hiragana or katakana; it’s often after reading the (very loose) translation that I can guess what the kanji would have been. One exception today: 野球!

  22. Lots of reading today, and first encounter with 相変わらず , one of my nemesis on WK! Besides Hole in the wall on Satori and a new episode of Dr. Slump, I did a set of reading practice sessions on Bunpro. The short dialogues are very helpful to me; they focus on a few grammar points and provide more natural examples than the lessons.

  23. The recall sessions on KW have become a drag, leaving little to no time to read. Drastic choices are needed. One episode on Satori had barely any unknown kanjis, and yet I got stumped on almost every sentence . Time to bid KW goodbye and spend more time on bunpro grammar, simply reading and studying the examples.

  24. Busy day, managed a couple of episodes on Satori and finished one episode of Dr Slump.

  25. Lots of reading today, reached episode 22 of Hole in the wall. Managed to read a few of the Japanese subtitles on a craftsman’s video and that made my day !

  26. Another episode of Dr Slump, I’m slowly starting to recognise words I learned on WK in their hiragana and katakana spelling. This is good practice, especially for reading katakana. Hole in the wall is getting easier to read, the last couple of episodes contained only a few Kanjis I didn’t know. Stumbled on a Sōseki short story on Tadoku (lvl 5), this looks amazing, keeping it for later. Even in its simplified version it seems daunting. A link is provided to the original text :open_mouth: … something to tackle maybe in 10 years time?!

  27. Finished volume 1 of Dr Slump.

  28. Read through episode 26 on Satori. Slow and steady, learning tons of grammar. Started Vol 2 of Dr. Slump, the interface is a bit buggy on my device, which sometimes means no translation… can’t say I understand what I read, but it’s easy enough to figure out what’s going on with the pictures alone.

The kanji looks so close to 脳 , it stopped me in my tracks. This is going to be fun to try and recall correctly on KW without mixing it up with 苛める :upside_down_face:

Still not great at doing my daily updates, but here’s my first month summary!
image

(since doing my listening challenge, ‘watch time’ no longer counts watching stuff with eng subs, which I did a lot of this month while half paying attention to the spoken language)

30/30 days read, finished 2 volumes: volume 1 of my ヤニ吸う reread and volume 1 of 僕の心のヤバイやつ. Lots of my page counts came from just kinda random stuff, some pixiv and twitter stuff, reading random chapters of stuff for book clubs or for test reads, but I also started a new book book! 怪人二十面相 | L28

I talked a little bit about it in my study log as well, but I also really fell in love with 宝石の国 1 | L30 this month after seeing that the last chapter was releasing, and did a very loose reading of the first 7 volumes in japanese before things got too hard for me to follow what was happening without treating it more seriously. Not counting any of that for my stats, but go read 宝石の国 it is very good.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to sit down and finish something I start, but having a lot of trouble with that recently, just starting new stuff left and right.

Depending on how things shake out, I might be starting umineko relatively soon with some people… which would mean I have to find a way to focus on something for a pretty considerable chunk of time before that, though

had no internet for a while so today was a good day to start 探偵(たんてい)ガリレオ by 東野圭吾(ひがしのけいご) which is a series of short detective mystery stories and the first in this series. it’s a little tricky, with some rarer kanji, minimal furigana, and basically none for names. fine for 良介(りょうすけ) less so for 龍男(たつお) or whatever 一之 is supposed to be  but i’m having fun so far! only about 23 pages in tho (about a third of the first story). it’s quite long too, 300-smth pages, so i’ll be reading this for a while i think

today’s nhk article was this one, plus the entries on Vmasu and Vmasu as noun in aDoIJG

words that stood out:

ずんぐり - short and stout
唖者(あしゃ) - (a) mute, a mute person
子機(こき) - telephone extension, cordless phone. the base unit is called 親機(おやき) which is cute
ポリタンク - plastic container, like a water/petrol tank

I’ve been absolutely terrible at tracking once again, but I’ve been reading something every day. I’ve been making slow progress on 傲慢と善良 and ハイキュー!!

:notebook_with_decorative_cover: :video_game: :cherry_blossom: :shamrock: May 1

Read some 傲慢と善良 and ハイキュー!! Vol.6, almost done!

:notebook_with_decorative_cover: :video_game: :cherry_blossom: :shamrock: May 2

Finished 傲慢と善良 at last!! This book took me forever. I’m glad I finished it in the end and it was always interesting to read the comments in the book club threads but now I’m hoping to get to some shorter books that can also keep my interest as this one was a bit of a slog at times. Not sure what those will be yet.
Also finished ハイキュー!! Vol. 6! This is were I was last time I was reading this series so now I can go onto previously unread content, yay! ( I mean this is still covered by the anime so I know what happens but still new in its own way…)

1500 more characters from the VN Island today. I could have read more, but I just got to the end of a scene and didn’t want to start a new one. It’s my first VN, and while it’s definitely too difficult for me, I’m really enjoying it! There’s something about just getting one sentence at the time, and having the time to analyse and understand it before going to the next sentence, along with the voice acting and the drawings in the background… It just draws me in and I can read way more at a time from a VN than from a book!

I tried Tandem a bit today because I saw it mentionned several times here on the forums. It seems like a great app to engage with natives, I wrote with a few people and could understand them easily, but wow I can say almost nothing, it’s a bit embarassing with all I have read so far :x anyway it was fun to try, but won’t commit to it just yet. Want to spend more time still on improving my reading and listening skills before I worry about writing or talking.

・ 今はもうない - Switch Back (59% → 62%) Almost done with week 5.
・ 拝啓見知らぬ旦那様、離婚していただきます〈上〉(64% → 100%)

The book I finished reading has points worth criticizing: lack of proper consent, domestic violence, so many rumours and misunderstandings, メンヘラ stalker, the female lead is super strong-willed but really weak to sexual advances? smh

The dialogue is hilarious though. So many quips, especially the female lead be roasting everyone, haha :fire:

  • Nearly done with ダン飯6. This isn’t the most useful of metrics because it’s sort of a series I’m super into and I’ve already read the english, and I already did a scanning pass over the whole thing so I’ve ‘read’ it before, but I am finding it’s getting a lot easier to read on a per-chapter basis… at least until I slow down to scribble all over the pages anyway. I just really enjoy reading this series!
  • Read a bit more テレワーク last night. This really is quite difficult, I can’t tell if more so than ダン飯 but I just happen to know more dungeon vocab at this point. I think at least definitely moreso than ゆるキャン△ (though, again, not sure if that’s just because I’ve already seen those episodes of Yuru Camp but I haven’t read ahead in Telework). I do have to keep looking at someone else’s translation to fully get it. Ah well, it’s still reading … and it’s reading I want to do, which is the crucial thing.
