2024 Winter Challenge Summary

Read: 51/60 days
Total tracked reading time in Feb: 20 hours, 4 mins

I managed to complete 4 manga over the past two months, which I’m really chuffed with after only managing to struggle through Horimiya at the end of 2023. I can absolutely feel improvements with my reading speed and comprehension, especially of longer sentences, and I’ve doubled my vocabulary by reading just these four.

可愛いだけじゃない式守さん Vol 1

For March, I think I’ll pick up the next ABBC book, and also continue with Bungo and the Bluelock spin-off series.
I also really want to start reading some longer stories, so I bought 5分後に意外な結末 for the Switch and I’m having a go at those every now and again.

Haven’t updated all week, but I’ve read every day, and finished re-reading ハイキュー!! Vol.2

Since I’ve only really been doing this challenge during February I’ll continue for at least the first half of march and then I’ll see if I take a little break before the next one.

My goals for the following weeks is to keep reading a weekly ハイキュー!! volume and go back to reading the ABC book I dropped, 傲慢と善良

３月２日 ー 魔女がいた街, a short story by @kilightit. I didn’t have much time to read today, but these Twitter one-offs are a really good format for days like this.

  • 火(ひ)の車(くるま) = desperate financial circumstances
  • 腐(くさ)っても鯛(たい) = even rot, it’s still a (highly valued) 鯛(たい) :fish:. 真鯛(まだい) appears to be highly valued.
  • 押(お)し出(だ)し = presence; demeanor
  • 生(い)ける屍(しかばね) = living corpse; walking dead
  • 直立不動(ちょくりつふどう) = standing stiffly upright. Absolutely no movement.
  • 固(かた)めの盃(さかずき) = a cup for pledge (mutual commitment) :wine_glass:
  • ざっくばらん(.) = outspoken; frank
  • 柴刈(しばか)り = firewood (cutting and) gathering. 芝刈(しばか)り also comes in IME, but it’s lawn mowing. I have never considered that 柴犬(しばいぬ) uses a different Kanji from 芝生(しばふ).
  • 灯火(とうか) = a lamp. Has another reading of 灯火(ともしび).
  • 出不精(でぶしょう) = stay-at-home; homebody. 外出に関して不精(ぶしょう)なさま.
  • 光輝(こうき) = brilliance; gleam. The second Kanji is 輝(かがや)く.
  • 孵(かえ)る = to be hatched :hatching_chick:. Paired with 孵(かえ)す. Talking about a 卵(たまご) :egg:. The process before is 孵化(ふか) :chicken:.

I thought it was cute! The quality of the scan on bookwalker is a little low, though, so some of the furigana was a bit hard to read. Brought back memories of Horimiya…
