oh god that was the correct interpretation of that article? I couldn’t figure it out but i was just like ‘surely they didn’t give the writing prize to a statistical analysis machine, i must be translating this wrong’

Yeah, she’s being pretty open about using AI directly for writing parts of it. Which, given the content of the book is aaaalllmost a neat gimmick, but it’s hard to separate that from the other issues around AI and treat it as a neutral writing tool in this context for me. It’s a bummer. I probably wasn’t gonna read it anyway, but now I’m definitely not. Curious to see if the akutagawa prize club ends up reading it, and what their thoughts are on it, though.

ふしぎ駄菓子屋 7 pages in Ch 3. This chapter is stretching my comprehension, I will go back to see if a reread sorts me out but I think I’ll need some lookups due to their being some elements I haven’t read about in Japanese yet.

Read a little before bed on the 18th (yesterday), finishing off chapter 1 of Alice 10th which was one volume and 30+ pages long (basically I’ve managed to read one manga chapter so far this year, I finished my first volume before I finished my first chapter ). I flipped through the rest of the volume and chapter 2 doesn’t seem to end in this volume, so the suuuuuuuper long chapters continue.
And today, I have so far read 2 pages. I’ll probably read more Alice 19th later.
@lucylavelle and @ChristopherFritz, how is the light novel version of Orange? I’ve been thinking maybe I’ll read that because I know I’ll enjoy it since I liked the original manga. But I’m always leery of adaptions because they can be all over the place in quality. Sometimes they differ a lot, but the difference is good; often the difference just make it different or worse. Sometimes it is very faithful, and most of the time that is good, and sometimes it is bad because it doesn’t fit the new format.
So basically, what you thinking about it so far? Not sure how far either of you are into it, but you two are the only ones I know that have read it even a little. Thanks!
I enjoyed the little I read, but since we were still going through the manga at the time, the material was a bit too fresh for me to fully enjoy the light novel. As such, I didn’t read enough to gauge the quality.
I’m sure I’ll get back to it (start it over, as I didn’t get very far) eventually.
The material wasn’t any more difficult than the manga, except that you get a lot of words uncommon in manga due to having narration.

another ouran chapter, another good one. a few trickier bits than yesterday’s (it was kyouya’s pov) but doable. also finished the rest of あなたはブンちゃんの恋 which was probably pushing it a bit but i didn’t want to put it down so here we are😅 about mushi-shi’s difficulty level i think (in the low 30s on natively), maybe a bit higher, i was slowed down a bit by having to look up a bunch of doraemon stuff in the middle. i only have vol 1 so i’ll have to look into getting the rest of the volumes at some point (though it doesn’t seem to be finished unfortunately)!
guess that handwritten ouran kanji!
answer: 級 apparently. it’s the right half i really struggled to work out
today’s nhk article was this one, plus another granblue bnha collab chapter (the end is in sight! still can’t work out when uraraka’s dialect comes out but at least she used a ~へん as well as a や this time), and the entry on につき in aDoIJG
words that stood out
桜蘭:
錚々 - eminent, distinguished
面々 - every person, everybody
家族団らん - harmony in a family, sitting in a circle as a family and enjoying conversation
ブンちゃん:
五分刈り - close haircut
自腹 - paying one’s own way/out of one’s own pocket

Only intensively read one page of Goosebumps last night, and there were a couple sentences that I was having so much trouble parsing. So I gave up. I think today will be a reading/japanese study day for real this time, I’m totally not just saying that like I’ve said every other day right before taking a 3hr nap or whatever…

街の少年
Progress - page 47/47 complete!
This ended and got wrapped up quicker than I thought it would. It was a pretty fun read, wouldn’t have minded if it were a chapter or two longer really.
May start the next story tomorrow, will see how much time I get, I may have to skip weekends.

Actually remembered that I’d seen 食戟のソーマ volume 1 was available for free for a short while (aka limited period free, so temporarily extended sample really ). I loved the anime. Sometimes I find fan service really annoying, but somehow I kinda enjoy it for this series, maybe because it sells the eating tasty food experience in an interesting way? xD
So I’ve already planned to get the manga, but I thought I’d try the first volume. I’ve read 3 chapters in it so far—I think—and reading it entirely extensively. And if I hadn’t seen the anime, it would all be waaay over my head. As soon as they start talking food and flavor and such, I’m lost.
Why do I like all these weird aristocratic and fancy language loving manga? (Ouran ) (Okay it is also food domain vocabulary, but not only
) I will finish the first volume, but it is definitely not on a read-soon list because there would be pages where I looked up every other word, and I ain’t got patience for that.

So as mentioned last week, I picked back on the LN of 本好きの下剋上 (or rather, the junior version of the LN of 本好きの下剋上). I started again at chapter 4, as apparently I’d left midway during that chapter so starting the chapter from the start was easier than remembering my location from last time. It went better than last time I read this section (0.18 pages/minute, compared to 0.06 last time), but I’m still very very slow.

And somehow this week got very busy, very small reading today and nothing yesterday
I read ten level N5 articles from Watanoc and four Level one stories.
January 19th!
The final chapter of volume 1 of この美術部には問題がある! today.
I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this manga at the beginning, but each chapter got a little better and by the end I was enjoying it.
I’m going to pause reading it now that I’ve reached the end of the volume, since I have so much other stuff I want to read - but I may go back to it and read the next volume at some point in the future.
I’m only (almost) 4 chapters in, but I’m really enjoying it so far! It seems to follow the manga faithfully, but a bit more descriptively since it doesn’t have images to rely on.
Every now and then it uses a panel or two of the manga to illustrate a page so that gives me a nice feeling of nostalgia whenever it happens.
Its pretty easy to read, probably about the same as the manga, but of course much more text-dense.

I’ve learned the difference between love and 憧れ. First in the anime Yubisaki to Renren last week and now the topic showed up again in Silent Witch. I feel like I haven’t really known what the word 憧れ is supposed to represent until recently, so it’s neat to see how it is used with this kind of distinction. As in, admiration (attraction) doesn’t have to be love (romantic).
Day 19
奥日光 episodes 23 24 25 26 27 28, yomujp article about plums, and I reread the first page of また、同じ夢を見ていた. By now I’ve seen most of the vocabulary on that page on Jpdb, so I understood a bit better than the first read.
Jan 19
- ARIA chapter 14
- シャドーハウス chapters 145 and 146
- 舞妓さんちのまかないさん chapter 14
Seems like lately Fridays have often ended up being good reading days for me
Jan 20
- Feeling like I needed something low stakes so read からかい上手の 元 高木さん 6 | L16 without lookups. Missing bits here and there but it’s so low stakes i cbf’d looking things up. (I need to finish the physical I have of this series so I can get rid of them and clear up the shelf space; I’ve decided I don’t like the series enough to keep physicals)
- Will probably keep with my reread of ヤバいやつ9 with lookups today

Caught up to the end of the chapter, which is where I stopped in my last extensive reading session. The next chapter is kind of long (17 pgs?) so not sure if I will want to try reading the whole thing in one go with no lookups. I might get very lost haha.

Reread the first chapter of the Jam Maker on Satori reader. I also read a couple level 0 graded readers on Tadoku and tried to find something easy on Comicon to read, so I read the first chapter of バステル家族. (I got to play with Joshi’s “search by radicals” feature to find that last kanji lol).
Jan. 19
I attempted to read the second chapter of バステル家族, but gave up about halfway through. This was a bit too advanced for me, and there’s no furigana. I thought a simplistic slice-of-life comic would be easy enough, but I guess I got ahead of myself so I’m gonna have to be patient and scale back the difficulty.
I also read the second chapter of the Jam Maker on Satori.
