vol 8 of ouran here we go! good first chapter all round, could have read two but didn’t want to burn out on it. instead i used my randomiser for another bookwalker manga and it spat out あなたはブンちゃんの恋and ooooh this is exactly my speed! weird, melancholy (actually just straight up miserable in places) and (spoilers) queer. it’s a little difficult, but in the way mushishi was where it’s kind of sparse but full of meaning (tho there was some n1 grammar i’ve never seen before so there is that). only read two chapters but really looking forward to going back to it. art is excellent too
today’s nhk article was this one (plus a little bit of this one), another chapter of the granblue bnha collab (it was five sections this time, and they were all long ), and the entries on にとって and について in aDoIJG
words that stood out
桜蘭:
暗所恐怖症 - fear of the dark
ブンちゃん:
アル中 - alcoholism
ポチる - to buy something online
the grammar was たら~たで as in 行ったら行ったで. renshuu link here
Went back and worked on this chapter intensively with lookups. Was very charmed by this description of an item found in a backyard: 小鳥の水浴び用の石の台 I guess there’s no word for birdbath.
The pistol-wielding mystery box guys are meeting at a secret hideout behind a shady-looking big iron door, which leads to an underground bunker with guns and swords on the wall and they’re all drinking and playing cards. Definitely a yakuza den.
Words found behind the big iron door
敷居「しきい」ー Threshold; sliding door groove; sill
上首尾「じょうしゅび」ー Great success; happy/good result
臆病者「おくびょうもの」ー Coward; wimp
For this one, I can’t really piece together the meaning well. The context is that the guy have more or less dragged her into a taxi to the airport when she was at school. (It is a shoujo manga, go with it. >_> He isn’t the romantic lead, at least, just thinks he is.) So she’s trying to figure out a way to get out of the taxi, so she comes up with the idea that she doesn’t have her passport (as can be seen in the picture).
(The taxi driver must be very oblivious, or willfully not listening to the conversation, or someone who thinks it is normal for guys to drag girls into cabs and take them somewhere against their will. Doesn’t speak very well for that dude. Although same could be said for the kidnapper dude, although I’d say he’s mostly oblivious, although it isn’t entirely clear why he is so oblivious in this situation, comedic license, I guess?!)
Also have some pictures of my cat, since I have them at hand currently:
Kiro is too cute, however he is a pretty naughty cat at times... -.- Especially since it is often too cold for him to be outside right now, so all his energy needs to be used up indoors... ... ...
And today I finished up volume two of 放浪息子. I’m definitely getting through these faster than I expected, so I may have to revise my yearly target - at the end of last year I was thinking 30 manga volumes for the year, I’m 20% to my target with only about 5% of the year done.
I might revise it to to 52 manga volumes and/or some amount of LNs. Probably after this I’ll have another go at the 本好きの下剋上 LN and decide what a reasonable target for LNs is for me.
This was probably the nicest reading session I’ve had of the challenge so far! Only roughly 10 new words across the entire chapter, and after reading through the ABBC threads, my comprehension was pretty spot on as well. Starting to see progress now…
Yes - in the theory of SRS, this is happening all the time anyway on words you don’t see/use/connect with meaning often (in any language – see rarer english words like eg sisquepidelian, antipodean or antidisestablishmentarianism), it’s just more noticeable in an SRS since there’s a pass/fail aspect to the words – though my ‘recall meaning → word’ is a lot worse than my ‘pronouncation → meaning’ or ‘kanji → meaning’ since I almost never practice production really, but what can you do, it’s not really my interest.
Anyway, i’m remembering the short term stuff well enough and my overall revision remains below 30min which is manageable enough for me.
‘Finished’ Dungeon Meshi 1. I say ‘finished’ because using no-lookups the last chapter had probably something like a 30% comprehension rate if that, but I had already read it in English (many years ago) and together with the words got the gist of what’s going on. An interesting experiment, but this series is probably too far above my level at the moment without easy lookups and without furigana. It is really cool to be able to understand more fantasy story vocab though I think, but will have to find an easier starting point and work my way back here later.
I could (and am planning to) just read the english versions in tandem, but not sure how ‘reading’ that is… I think if I do a ‘no-lookup’ pass first and then do ‘study’, I could justify it to myself. But it’s probably better I just read stuff at a lower level for now.
About 6.5 pages of the first Orange light novel today. Only two pages left of chapter 4, but I decided to leave them for tomorrow since I’m a bit tired and I have a class with my tutor tomorrow morning.
はなものがたり chapter 7. There were a few sentences here that I had so much trouble parsing, but I managed to get a good guess after re-reading them multiple times, and that’s good enough (I have to tell myself that, because I have trouble moving on)
Progress:
聞き耳のラジオ Episode 23 - 27
Spanish Short Stories for Beginners Volume 2 - Short story 3 titled “El robot”
Yayyy! Finished my second series on Satorireader this week! The last 5 episodes week got me thinking about the first movie I watched in Japan without subtitles: すずめの戸締まり. Having finished this, I started to reread Ruri Dragon again from the beginning. I had joined the ABBC while it was ongoing upto Week 3 but then took my hiatus in the middle of it. But I intend to use the ABBC to help me with the vocab and grammar. Thanks to everyone who contributed to that!
I also finished a short story in Spanish in one sitting! I might reread it the following week just to review new words.
I said i was gonna read while I was snowed in, but then I went for a walk in the snow and then came home and slept the rest of the day. Also figured I could use this as a chance to cut down on the caffeine a bit, which really dug into my focus and awake time, plus spent a lot of time working on organizing my study log and whatnot.
Read:
some news articles about the 芥川賞 winner, ended up being kind of a bummer how much AI was used in writing it. Really feels kinda like a kick in the teeth to give a lit prize to something written at all with chat gpt, no matter how little.
コンビニ人間 8 → 10 - small bite
宇宙戦艦ヤマト - submitted to natively and did my test read. It might just be that the early exposition parts are hard, but this feels like it might be an honest to god green level range manga: big text exposition dumps, lots of military and sci fi terminology, politics. Struggling through it reminds me a bit of trying to read ナウシカ, but without the benefit of a beloved ghibli classic for context It does, thankfully have furigana, because I think I was probably looking up ~10 words per page of manga. Hopefully the all the 艦隊 vocab will help when I eventually get to reading 銀河英雄伝説 in… whenever I feel up for trying to read something in the 40s
Interestingly today’s Netflix episode of Dungeon Meshi covered exactly the chapter I just finished reading which was quite a nice feeling. (I also re-read it in english anyway just before). Maybe I’ll watch it with jpn subtitles again…
