…I know I just mentioned I couldn’t read a lot of Ouran at once, but I do have these weird days where it just flows better in a single sitting I guess I got engrossed in the story (+ a few pages barely had text, which helps). Not sure if I’ll be able to finish the chapter tomorrow though - will probably focus on あん, since I have one more chapter to go for this week.
You’re welcome ;D (I’m sure others also contribute, but I have to say I do add a lot xD) Reading the digital version sure does help for adding to the vocab sheet, though - I’m already at the computer doing the reading most of the times, so might as well look things up and just add there right away. With physical books, I tend to carry them a bit everywhere, circle the words I don’t know, and eternally forget to look them up… I’ve been meaning to add to the あん vocab sheet for a while, but alas.
Just kidding! I forgot the HSR events were ending and spent my Saturday on that, doing last week’s read on Sunday. I got two hours in before my brain fried (the sentences really are longer). If my reading speed is comparable to 999, I should be averaging 135 characters per min, and thus about 3 hours per each weeks reading, so probably another hour to go which I’ll do tonight. If I’m going slower and need another hour I’ll have to push another day and plan accordingly going forward.
Honzuki P2V3 manga meanwhile is nearly complete. I must be getting used to the writing since it’s getting quicker (except those prayers lmao).
I’ve got 1.5% more to read this week for Konbini which I’ll probably get to Wednesday or Thursday.
A productive reading day! Read some more コップクラフト (30 → 35%) and finished 僕が愛したすべての君へ (91% → 100%!!). Feels good to finish a book. Hadn’t done that since ユージニア in January… my goals for this year aren’t looking great but let’s keep reading.
A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : 2 entries
Finished off volume 1 of Ouran. I’m almost caught up. I’ll probably be caught up in another couple of days. I also think maybe the art is already a lot better in volume 2… I need to put them side to side, but it looked crisper. For all I know, that is just the printing, which is why I’ll do a visual comparison to be certain. But not today, so tired. Was gonna get a good start into volume 2, but only read the character page, the omake, and the first page. Then was the introduction-y wall of text which probably reads the same as the couple of times it showed up in volume 1, but my brain noped out.
Didn’t read anything last weekend, I was focusing on improving my schedule and some other stuff that needed tweaking (all of it very successful, which I’m very happy about), but I’m back to reading now c: . I met some new Fatal Twelve characters, and at first sight I liked them quite a lot. So far they have all been pretty nice. Enjoying the music and art of this VN and the feel they create a lot, too.
Also because of some firefox sync shenanigans I didn’t remember that by default addons are synced, so I naively said “oh I don’t need this and this for this setup in particular” and deleted them, and of course then they were all deleted from my main setup . Luckily they were only a few, that I remember, but one of them was Yomichan which was pretty painful. BUT, silver linings, after a whole lot of setting it up to how I had it configured before, which took quite a while yesterday with dictionaries and Anki Connect and whatnot, I discovered that Animecards has a new format for the mining deck template that they used to have, which is what I use, and it’s super nice so I converted my previous cards to it (all of them had the same layout so it was an easy conversion, it just arranges things a bit differently now). So I ended up with a better setup after all. And now I’m using a modified Yomichan version that supposedly will make it super easy to export dictionaries and settings to eventually Yomitan (TheMoeWay’s fork of Yomichan, after Yomichan announced cease of updates; they’ll apparently keep developing the thing). Lesson learned though, addon sync is off.
Day 34: Aug 4th
What did I read?: かにみそ
How much did I read?: 2 pages
How long did it take me?: 52 min
Well today we learned that the narrator is probably a psychopath-
His poor fishies I don’t consider myself that sensitive in terms of fictional animal deaths, but this kinda made me want to nope right on out, ngl. Like…why? What was the reason? The way the narrator thought about it and the callousness of that whole moment was just…ick.
I know it’s labeled as horror but I didn’t expect we’d be getting to that vibe so quickly Sortaaaaa thinking I might drop this one. It’s hard and the narrator icks me out, I think I sort of thought he’d be more sympathetic (like…even just for 2 seconds? lmao idk, like we’re only on page 4, man). I guess maybe I was hoping for surreal not-that-horrifying “horror” vibes and got “oh no he’s actually seriously disturbed” horror vibes instead?
All of this once again begs the question, WHY is the cover so cute? D: I feel cheated and lied to
Day 35: Aug 5th
What did I read?: ふらいんぐうぃっち Vol 12
How much did I read?: 29 pages
How long did it take me?: 26 min
The end of volume 12 already
Day 36: Aug 6th
What did I read?: 晴れのち四季部 Vol 1
How much did I read?: 13 pages
How long did it take me?: 26 min
Day 37: Aug 7th
What did I read?: 晴れのち四季部 Vol 1
How much did I read?: 8 pages
How long did it take me?: 23 min
I feel like parts of this are going over my head, because it’s 4-koma (I never understand them as well as other things for some reason?) but it’s cute nonetheless. I love how the panel with a million words was literally labeled with a little footnote - 読まなくても大丈夫です Ok, if you say so
かけおちガール volume 1, chapters 3-4, which finishes off the volume! That was the fastest (in terms of days) that I’ve finished a manga volume in a while (but that’s partly because it was relatively short with not very dense text). Will definitely continue reading this series!
It’s funny thinking about how almost all the series I’m reading right now (other than series I have physical copies for) were ones I started reading because there was a limited-time free version. So I guess the companies that run them really know what they’re doing
Thank you for helping to look into that for me! Even though I still ended up finishing the volume today, I felt a lot less rushed for time. I guess now I know checking Bookwalker is a good trick for when the Kobo listing doesn’t have an end date listed (since it seems like they’re often synced)!
I’m also interested in mystery story, so thank you for the recommendation. You guys found it dense? I’m reading Bakuman now and boy it feels like a novel squished inside speech bubbles!!
Day 38! Haven’t been posting but I’ve diligently kept up lots of reading as usual. Big news is that I’m a little over 94% through 硝子の塔の殺人, and should be finishing it tomorrow I hope! It’s good; I’ll write a natively review at that time probably. Looks like it took me about 26 days for this ~500 page book (271k characters) which is not bad on its own, but also I’m reading many other things in Japanese alongside it so…
Now that I know there’ll be a club for Flowers in some months, I’m holding off on that so it looks like it’s time for more novels. I’ve committed to making 家庭用安心坑夫 the next thing I read, sounds weird and interesting! It’s pretty short, too.
No clue if it’s written in a difficult way or not, but I’m just jumping into whatever I feel like; there’s no longer any need for fear of difficulty.
(ok there might actually be but I am going to behave as if there isn’t and we’ll see when/if I get smacked down to reality one of these days)
Still plugging away. Chobits Ch. 2 in progress, and random pages of some manga magazines when I’m running late and too tired to follow a plot. Interesting how different it is to read things that are advertisement pages or other non-dialogue material vs the typical dialog and narrative of a comic. I’m branching out as I learn, I promise!
Today I actually took the time to translate two of my sentences into Japanese and write them that way in my daily work log, which is unofficial and will not impact anyone but myself. I definitely need to work on my grammar, but getting there one step at a time.
preview for 欠けた月とドーナッツ. Utterly baffled by 何 getting furi
元ヤンパパとヒツジ先生 よつば④
元ヤンパパとひなたくん. It’s a full-color 4コマ booklet! So cute
おばちゃんたちのいるところ story 15, which was about 7 pages. Although honestly I just skimmed the last 2
27 pages of 君の声は魔法, reading ch 9 and leaving off on pg 240. Urg, the acting role Rin landed sounds a lot like Sakuragi toward him… Also it’s really funny how Tachibana (a guy from Rin’s past who’s shown up again) is portrayed as bad but Sakuragi is portrayed as romantic yet they’re exactly the same. The only difference is Rin grew to want Sakuragi’s advances, so of course his earlier unwanted advances weren’t going to be portrayed as bad either! I hate this book so much. At least I’m close to finishing it, but I should still stop leaving it for the evening and read something I actually like before bed…
To be clear, I didn’t even start reading it. Look through the sample and you’ll understand what we mean. I read manga because I like the mix of art with text, and I also remember I didn’t care for the art either in that one.
I asked for mystery manga recommendations here, so you can check out the replies to see if you find something interesting. A lot of good recommendations—well, I haven’t read them yet, but they seem good.
You started かにみそ! I didn’t realize you meant it when you said you wanted to read it because of the cover (which is admittedly super cute)
Tell me more please! I’m interested in the book, but I get vague animal cruelty vibes from what you wrote and I hope that’s not the case. I don’t mind spoilers, especially since you’re so early on in the book.
back to 逆転検事2 and this case somehow gets even more complicated that said, some of that was my fault for reading something wrong/misunderstanding the situation.
today’s nhk article was this one plus this easy one, and i’ve finished what of the jjk collab is there atm. there’s gonna be more at some point later in the week i think? watched the next bit of y5 and oh boy was that humbling. it starts in fukuoka and all the characters (bar like, three) speak 博多弁 (or some other variant) and i was looking up so many things i’ll treat it as a crash course in the dialect, that’ll make me feel better
words that stood out:
逆転検事2:親近感 (affinity, closeness), 時効 (statute of limitations)
龍が如く:like, all the 九州弁 ばってん、やけん, and ばい turned up the most i think
MissDagger alluded to this but just so you know sort of what you’re in for
