• ホリミヤ １７巻 - someone in the book club thread shared a picture of their new complete set, which included a 17th volume. The series “ended” at 16, so this was a shock to me, but apparently they are doing some kinda random extra chapters like the second season of the anime is doing! So, of course, I dropped everything to go read it They are all new to me, and I really just devoured this volume. So nice to see these nerds again, I’ll take any and every excuse. this volume, especially the first chapter, i think is probably the hardest reading level the series has been, but the rest felt not too out of line.

  Got the standard VN setup to work on my PC (Textractor + Clipboard Inserter + Texthooker), thanks so much to @Daisoujou and @AzusaChan for the help.
  It’s an amazing setup! If anyone is hesitating on trying VNs because of the language skill, don’t!
  With that setup I can just Yomichan anything I want, and since the sentences are directly in my clipboard, can also directly paste in DeepL if the sentence doesn’t make sense to me.
  So I’ll give a go at reading my first VN in Japanese

Finished this week’s Ouran today. Almost done with あん as well - might just end up reading the remaining 4 pages before bed, since I’m curious to see how the story continues.

For now, I’ve finished all the physical manga I’ve bought recently, except for vol 1 of 薬屋のひとりごと, which is honestly… a little overwhelming, with all the technical and historical vocabulary. I feel like it’s not for me right now. I have two more novels apart from the (3) I am currently reading, so I’m trying to hold off from buying physical books for a bit, but who knows. For now, I’ve got kindle unlimited, and I’ve been playing around with some samples of whatever looks interesting - might start on ばらかもん, which I’ve been wanting to try in the past. But there’s also this one that really caught my eye: it’s called マダムが教えてくれたこと, and revolves around a waitress that is captivated by an older woman with a great sense of fashion. The first few pages were really lovely, and… … ok, let’s be honest, I know I’ll start reading it (I just can’t let it get in the way of the book clubs I’m in, lol)

Well...it's not NOT that

it’s not, like, the worst example of animal cruelty that could ever exist, objectively speaking, more callous disregard than like…active intent/desire to harm, but :x He certainly doesn’t care about them suffering either, and that’s the bit that icked me out.

The story starts with him finding this little crab on an early morning beach walk; something about it fascinates him, so he decides to bring it back to his house. He still lives with his parents, but they’re hardworking virtuous people who are heading out to work just as he’s arriving, so he has the house to himself - he himself is 20 and currently unemployed, and he doesn’t seem to have a particularly positive view of himself or society in general. Anyway, he gets home and he realizes that he needs somewhere to put this crab. So to make a place for the crab to live, he takes the fish tank in his room out to the garden and dumps it. With the fish still inside it. The rare, pretty tropical fish, which he specifically took the time to search out and acquire but which are clearly now completely neglected in their moss-covered tank because he got bored of them as soon as he got them. But thinking about them flopping around on the ground, gasping for air on the verge of death, makes him want to laugh. Like someone staring into the flame of a candle, gleefully fantasizing about the light the flames would cast as they burn through houses and people. (That is actually in there, I didn’t make that up lmao) If that doesn’t scream psychopath, I don’t really know what does

So yeah anyway, that’s about as far as I got. I just don’t know if this narrator’s POV is one that I want to keep reading from

Seasons was about a lot of things. First up, happy 野球(やきゅう)の日(ひ)（8/9）. That one’s for the numbers, not history. Also did you know that alcohol has different kanji for temperatures? 冷- normal cool, 涼- 15^C, 花- 10^C, and 雪- 5^C. Dunno who or where uses this. Maybe fancy bars? Also Seasons talked about 行合(ゆきあい)の空(そら), when the clouds are wispy around this time of year.

黒コウモリと白(しろ)コウモリ is a cute tadoku reader I saw so I decided to read it instead of prefectures since it was short and cute. It was easy to understand for me, but the plot felt childish I think I prefer tadoku’s non-fiction even if this one had nice drawings.

Super I finished the reading I was behind on, but I read it right before bed, so I honestly don’t remember it well. I was going to try to read some of JoJo too, but I was exhausted. Maybe tonight will be different. I have evening plans, but if I don’t have energy, I’m cancelling them.

• 19 pages of ガールズ・ブルー, leaving off on pg 116. “二十歳を過ぎたおばさんみたいだ” Excuse me, you’re 17, you’re not all that far off from your 20s yourself! Oba-san, indeed.
• 60 pages of 君の声は魔法, reading ch 10 and the short story epilogue thing 君の声は美味しい, finally finishing this stupid thing. I was smart and read this first today, and then it went straight into the “to sell” pile with much relish.

I dunno if it’s the worst thing I’ve ever read, but it’s certainly up there. And worse than I expected from the first couple chapters.

And now we finally learn the reason Sakuragi felt so entitled to Rin, who by all rights was a complete stranger: they met the summer they were in 2nd and 3rd grade respectively. Rin didn’t remember at all, but Sakuragi remembered him and he apparently fell in love with him back then, and so he felt that that gave him the right “have” Rin when they met again at 23/24 and used fake-dating to deter his fans as an excuse. He also hid that they’d met before from Rin. Not just “he doesn’t remember me and it never came up” —he slipped up once, and then instead of telling Rin, he quickly covered it up and changed the subject. Although he probably couldn’t tell him at that point or he’d endanger what trust he’d built up, considering how far in this was. But apparently it was actually because he’d decided he’d give up if Rin didn’t remember him before the summer was over. Uh huh. Sure. That’s not how he was written, and I’m sure that bit was just written to make it seem more romantic. And sure, not telling him might not inherently be gross or bad, but in light of all the other ways he’s manipulated Rin… I want to throttle him, he’s so gross. But oh, he’s the ~perfect, dreamy prince whom everyone wants~ and ~Rin was actually in love with him the summer of 3rd grade~ so it’s totally okay.

Oh god, and it keeps getting worse from there. I already thought my expectations were low, but apparently they still weren’t low enough. It’s like Hanafusa was challenged to see just how gross she could make this by the end. If I could rate negative stars, this would get them. Sakuragi likes making Rin’s voice go higher during sex because it makes him sound like a child and it’s cute and sexy? -retching noises- And of course when Sakuragi lifts both Rin’s legs, Rin’s position is compared to a baby getting its diaper changed. Because clearly the infantilization and pedo-adjacent shit isn’t complete without directly comparing him to a literal infant. I was just expecting him to be written like a woman like plenty of 受けs who’re described/drawn as feminine or androgynous are (and even ones who aren’t) (just write a frikkin’ m/f if that’s what you want, jesus effing christ on a pogo stick, don’t take a relationship that inherently defies gender roles and shove it into them anyway!!), but this is way worse.

Normally I like* rimming (no idea why, considering I’m hella ace and don’t even really get vanilla sex), but especially in the context of what just happened to Rin earlier in the day (Tachibana, who attempted to rape him a few years ago, showing up and making another attempt) and his previous trauma, um. (And of course that Rin gets no say, Sakuragi just does it without checking to see if it’s okay. Rin’s going “no, stop, don’t” like he has been the entire freaking time—but he “doesn’t actually mean it,” so it’s okay to ignore it, but even if Sakuragi did 100% know that [which he doesn’t, and has been shown not to care anyway], how the hell is that hot? Isn’t it hotter for your partner to be saying how good it feels and/or that they want more, if they can even say anything comprehensible aside from your name at all? The hell is with this trope(?) Even if it’s not actually rape, the whole “oh don’t listen to anyone when they say ‘no,’ especially if their body’s responding to your ministrations [never mind that it’s involuntary], they never mean it” thing just encourages rape, not to mention victim-shaming—and Sakuragi just tells him that it’s okay and it definitely won’t hurt and he’ll be gentle and turn him into a puddle. But then, when has Rin ever actually gotten a say?)

Started the week slowly with just a chapter or two a day, but I’ve had more energy the past couple days. Proud of myself for pushing through though. I decided I’m gonna choose to read my easier manga this week. Even though volume 2 of 異世界の沙汰は社畜次第 ended up on a cliffhanger. Dammit.

more 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２, one more section and then this case is over! things are starting to make a lot more sense now, very curious as to the resolution on this one. barely looked anything up too, which is affirming.

today’s nhk article was this one, and today’s fate episode was マリー’s summer one (uncomfy much?). made a 博多弁(はかたべん) cheat sheet for y5 and ended up barely using it even tho i watched maybe an hour and half, but it’s nice to have.
