another section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２ and with that the middle chunk of case 3 is finished! yes it took me that long. trying to keep this case straight in my head with no notes and over like two weeks was a mistake

today’s nhk article was this one (nice and short) and today’s fate episode was ウラムヌラン’s which was a bit odd. they’re also doing a promotion atm so all my hard work of working through my fate episodes is slowly slipping away from me again watched more y4 (maybe an hour?) and i’ve got less than an hour left total. saw kido’s betrayal coming from a mile off but i like him so i hope we get some sort of closure on him beyond his body disappearing down the lift and that’s it. oh and i read more of what i started on pixiv the other day (it’s quite long and has a lot of words i don’t know like だに (the particle)).

the sheer amount of character names alone you must have had to learn by now

So far I can only really recognise Nobunaga and Hideyoshi in kanji, there’s no way I can remember the others

It has helped with recognising (kanji) names as names though and not thinking they’re words. Especially some of the family names that are still pretty common today.

One of the few books I have completely stalled out on is a book of short stories about some of the less successful figures of the 戦国 era, by the crime novelist 松本清張. I found it just excessively difficult, largely because of the blizzard of historical names without furigana, where the author expects you to recognise 伊達政宗 or 武田 信玄 or whoever when they make a brief cameo appearance in a story…

I think I maybe have just read too much Sengoku stuff because I recognised both those guy’s names right away

In this, thankfully furigana is given every time someone new is introduced, and if they’ve been missing from the action for awhile then they get furigana again when they return. It’s also nice how it’s written, each chapter usually only revolves around a small group of people, so Hideyoshi and a few friends one chapter, then a couple of guys plotting on the sidelines the next. There’s only been a few chapters were a huge mass of kanji names have appeared altogether so far (but they are usually big battle scenes, were you get assaulted with a huge list of names for them to only all die a paragraph later).

It’s 奥羽の二人 if you want to try it (or avoid it!). The Natively ??38 level is about 7 too low in my opinion.

I’ve read other historical fiction by this author, and it wasn’t this difficult; it’s just something about the style or subject matter of these stories somehow…

Day 35! I read just over 10,000 characters in Fatal Twelve for the club today. I’ll save most thoughts for that thread, but I enjoyed the direction it moved quite a bit.

I like this character’s aggressively angular facial features, haha. I will say, some of the opening week stuff had longer sentences but wasn’t SO tough in my opinion for being slice of life-ish, but at this point especially I do think this is the toughest thing the club has read yet. Lots of long sentences with multiple words I was looking up today. I think it’s a nice little stretch for myself, definitely in the realm of things I can do without awful struggle, but I hope it doesn’t cause anyone to struggle to keep up.

Was hyped to see 心筋梗塞 so soon here after learning it in 硝子の塔の殺人, haha.

I’ve been wanting to start the novel of キノの旅, but I worry it will be too much together with the other 2 books I’m reading… perhaps once I’m done with the volume of D-Gray-Man. Anyway! I started reading キノの旅. Really happy with it so far; I feel like the difficulty level is great for me at the moment - a couple new words for me to learn, but the reading still feels fluid enough, like コンビニ人間.

Finished 本好き manga P2V2 and about to start V3 which was originally due 17 July.
I should be caught up to my manga reading schedule by EOW if all that polite speech doesn’t do me in first. Good practice though!

Started Fatal Twelve, by which I mean I spent 20 minutes setting it up and hooking it, and about 10 actually playing. Realizing it’s probably going to be harder to track % read than 999 was. I’ll finish last week’s reading tomorrow and hopefully this week’s on Sunday depending on if I can keep a similar pace as with 999 or not.

Well 2 days ago I messed up with the cat by letting the previous cat slip past into her area, he chased her down the corridor (not aggressively, I think), the she turned on him and there was a brief fight with a bit of fur flying. I think she’s forgiven me now but we will have to go very slow introducing the two of them properly.

Reading-wise, I’ve been going well. I’ve caught up on Spy Family and made good progress on the dictionary. Other books are about 2 weeks behind but should manage to catch up with them too now.

August 3rd was 鬼(おに)の霍乱(かくらん), or people who normally have great constitution but are surprisingly taken out by hot weather maybe they added too much to their tea. Today is taxi day, but not for wordplay reasons. The first taxi driven in Japan was driven on this day in Tokyo in… I didn’t write the year down…

JoJo was fun. I think my comprehension was better than yesterday too. I finished up the alien arc, which was fun to see the end of. I think I like this arc in the manga, but only the parts Rohan is in lol. I thought too that it was a shorter arc, but it seems that was just my imagination. Maybe it’s because I read the beginning of it pretty quickly? Next arc is Highway Star, which I’m really looking forward to

• Flowers - printemps ~1k characters - set this up to make sure it was working today and then read a bit to check the level for it. Looking forward to reading this! I might actually start early so I can ramp up the speed a bit more
• ふくよも volume 1 - the allure of the bookwalker freebies got me again, like a fish drawn to a shiny hook anyway, super cute. short volume, no furigana, but very simple overall. There’s like 9 volumes, but not quite enough going on in it for me to keep reading I think
• 化物語 little bit more, no page numbers so it’s kinda hard to track but probably 80% done w volume 1

Luckily the main portion of the game does use hiragana as usual, except for half a line so far where the MC was speaking literarily. The regular font’s also much easier to read

Also, that fishbowl is way too small and bare for that goldfish. I feel sorry for it

His father sold goldfish, so he’s confident in how he raises/handles goldfish since he learned from someone he sees as a professional, but his father’s fish apparently often died, and, hm, I wonder why. They also handle fish with their bare hands to change the water and stuff (scoop fish out with hand, dump out water, refill, dump fish back in), which I’m sure can’t be good for them either.

• ちかちか(.) = (on-mim) glittering; painfully bright
• くゆらす = to smoke (of cigarettes). Of 紫煙(しえん) (= cigarette smoke) in context.
• 引(ひ)けを取(と)る = to be inferior to. In context as ひけをとらない.
• 身(み)の毛(け)がよだつ = to have one’s hair stand on end; to give creeps. Also, 身(み)の毛立(けだ)つ.
  • 身(み)の毛(け) is body hair. よ part is what? 夜(よる)? 寄(よ)る? Dunno.
• はだける = to uncover (of a clothing); to open wide (of mouth). IME gives 開(はだ)ける and 肌蹴(はだけ)る.
• 下卑(げび)る = to be vulgar. Verb counterpart of 下卑(げび).
• 集(たか)る = to swarm; to gather; to be infested with
• 荒立(あらだ)てる = to aggravate
• 気高(けだか)い = noble; sublime; high-minded. I think of 毛並(けな)み, but that’s a different Kanji.
• つれない(.) = cold; heartless; unfriendly

• 係累(けいるい) = dependents (e.g. family ties)
• 汚名返上(おめいへんじょう) = clearing bad reps. 汚名(おめい)を返上(へんじょう)する in context.
