The Japanese wikipedia article for ペンション has a little note about that:
「Pension」とは元来、英語では、「年金」の意味である。英語圏でペンションといっても宿の意味では通じない。
Some web pages say that the Japanese word is a loanword from French, which probably makes more sense than it being wasei eigo or a use of a really obscure sense in English. (The OED quotes for it are almost all referring to French, Swiss, etc, places, so it’s a loanword from French here too.)
Interesting, because yeah I did do a very brief search and found references to it as an English term used in Europe and the like, so I figured it was just a regional thing, but I suppose everyone borrowed it from French in that case. Neat, thanks.

Well this has officially become danger territory very quickly, there’s no stopping at this point once I start reading. Once again didn’t plan to read that much, I’m definitely losing some sleep today 
. I regret nothing. Another day I’ve had to just save and quit or I’ll be here reading for one more hour.
It’s probably the most I’ve ever read in Japanese in one sitting too so far, that feels kinda nice actually. Losing track of time when reading in another language surely has to be a good sign.

I finished ハサミ男 today - review is here but safe to say I loved the book. I had read some review or another saying it was a bit gruesome and didn’t really think that is was until some of the final scenes which indeed were a bit graphic. It’s not torture or anything, but definitely a step up in violence from the rest of the book up to that point.
I have a poll on Natively for what to read next as my 積読 pile of physical books needs to be worked on a bit. I’ll give it a day or two and see how it shakes out.

今日「D.N.Angel」の3ページを読みました。
Today was long. I just had time to crash through 3 pages tonight. Around 50-60% comprehension, I think.
Day 23: July 23rd 
日々蝶々 Volume 1 (0% ➨ 100%)
Final convention volunteer day down! That means no more two-and-a-half-hour (total) daily commutes spent reading easy manga. No more reading in a dark theater between DVD swaps for showing anime episodes.
I’ve been enjoying reading 「ひよ恋」, but I’ve completed three volumes in under a week. It was nice to read something different, even if that did mean starting up a new series rather than reading one I was already partially through.
So far, 「日々蝶々」 is about as easy as I expected based on my volume of words known. The dialogue is light enough that it feels like ABBC material, but the boys use uber-colloquial teenage boy speech that even many BBC readers likely would be completely lost on what they’re saying.
Still low-level and not strong on grammar or dialect, so it’s usually a few pages a day of manga. Titles so far this month:

JoJo was intense. I always forget that Kira brutally beats the shit out of Koichi. It’s so intense, I know why I forget it every time, but it’s amazing how much it shocks me each time. I also noticed, no clue if this is in the anime, but Kira’s eyes well up like he’s going to cry.

There’s a great pattern of declining reading here unfortunately. I’m behind on everything I think. But today I fly home, and have a fair bit of time when I should be packing but will probably read instead. Then I fly back in a week bringing my cat to her new home!

Took basically a full day trip to go visit some friends, do some climbing, and then help one of them move some stuff, didn’t get back until pretty late and was just exhausted, plus was still feeling a bit demotivated from yesterday. Short shift tomorrow and it will probably not be busy, so I’m thinking time for more takagi at work. Realized I’m almost caught up to that club actually, so will probably turn that into a nice leisurely weekly treat once I’m there

It’s probably because I wasn’t doing a whole lot of handwriting reading when I first tried to read this, but even as early as the first chapter she’s wondering if she’s going a bit too far. That kinda early self-awareness wasn’t present at all in the anime, and I didn’t remember starting to show up until way later when I first read it in english. Changes the tone of the first chapter a lot I think, where she definitely finds out where senpai’s limits are by just completely blowing past them.
Partly to make myself feel better and maybe less discouraged, I went to check when the last time I tried reading this series was. If I remember right, it was one of the first series I tried making sentence mining cards for, and it was a real real real big struggle for me back then. May 18 2022, so a little over a year ago. Forcing myself to acknowledge my progress did make me feel a bit better, but it did not make me feel less physically tired, so I’ll end here for now for today.

I’m struggling with reading pure-text novels (vs mangas), I spent a lot of time in home office the past week and I just can’t bring myself to miss the art from バガボンド over just text so most days I read 5-1000 words at best (last 7 days was 5700 exactly), barely finished 1.5 chapters in 4 days. I did spend 1-2 days binge-reading the prior, I’m burning through the volumes in that.
aDoBJG is a struggle but I find it suprisingly useful. The point on differentiating onomatopoeias by voiced/voiceless consonants made a lot of sense. I usually struggle with those because they all look the same. Speaking of that, there’s a nice song by the same name: オノマトペ.
Apparently cats are well versed in the art of the 刀, we’d all do better if we learned from ニャンコ 先生:
The book club for SupaYani is also challenging. Weeks go by fast, but the 1 chapter is like a blink of an eye, I might crack at some point and read ahead if I run out of Vagabond chapters.
I like exotic vacations, but I’m also relocating for work.
I decided to visit Cape York on the northern tip of Australia. Although you have to keep away from the water, I didn’t even see a croc

Probably the first time I’ve read two volumes in a day… but this time I had all the possible buffs: high school environment, romcom tropes (they really used the 花火祭り one early on!) and full ふりがな accelerates this one to mach speed. Big variation in fonts in this one.
For the most part, no, unfortunately.
But I did see episode four of “This Art Club Has a Problem!” and may vote for it in the next BBC poll.
