今日も「D.N.Angel」の10ページを早く読みました。
そして、6ページを読み返しました。
I had time to burn through 10 pages at “get the jist” pace this morning. Then came back and reread 6 of those (4 of which were super cheap) for comprehension. Chewing through inspector Saehara describing the increased defenses was… educational. About a fifth the way through. Getting good proper comprehension exercise for a whole month will be great prep for book club.

I read a bit of mo dao zu shi in chinese cuz I heard people outside of china got crazy into it idk how you guys do it. these cultivation/fantasy-romance books feel like they want the readers to devote every last bit of water in their body to crying.

Finished my first Japanese book today :)))) ! What a fun ride. I typically avoid sappy books and lost interest in reading but reading the plot twists while learning new words have kept me going and I finished コーヒーが冷めないうちに within July! Now to find the next book to read…

Why do I randomly remember today that 険しい is read けわしい after being too lazy to look it up the last several times I came across it? It makes no sense. It’s not like I’ve seen the reading more than a couple times in the first place either (and the last time was several months ago). That wasn’t the only word from today I have no idea how I remembered the reading for, either.

Also I discovered that typing “h” works for “w” as well as “t” (like how “thi” gets you てぃ, “who” gets you うぉ). Of course, that’s the same number of keystrokes as “ulo,” but it’s easier mentally since it represents “wo” in loanwords.

• 11 pages of 2.43, starting ch 5-5 HOME GAME and leaving off on pg 107. Oh man, when Hata said he contacted Ochi’s parents, I remembered they didn’t exactly approve of him staying with volleyball. I never thought about how they might take this. I wonder if we get that. Also! We get Hata’s given name! I don’t think we’ve gotten any part of Seiin’s coach’s name still, though I know his surname somehow, don’t remember from where (it’s Ichijoudani, after the historical ruins in Fukui-shi); mostly he just gets called 先生 or 老先生 lol. And… it’s 試合開始!
• 9 pages of ガールズ・ブルー, leaving off on pg 23. gdi there’s a 鈴ちゃん in this book too, except it’s すずちゃん this time and not りんちゃん. We’ll see how big a part that character plays, but this may or may not have been the best book to read directly after さいとう高校…

Did a listening/grammar mock exam for JLPT N3 (~70 min)

Not much going on Thursday, but managed to finish the mock exam I was doing yesterday. Grammar and reading went… not really great (I had 50-55% I think). But that’s fine, since I have until December to study and I know I should focus on these points (listening and vocabulary went fine, I had 70-75% on these parts - I think if I continue studying at the current pace, I won’t have issues). I didn’t have time to catch-up with all the missing vocabulary from reading, as the chapters of あん are getting quite long now. But I still hope to eventually do so. I should aim to participate in less book clubs by the following months… else I won’t have time to study grammar!

light read today, a little y3 and not much else. it did feature the utterly bizarre sentence of YOUが桐生一馬(きりゅうかずま) which makes even less sense cos that character then spoke in english for the rest of the conversation. baffling.

edit cos i forgot about today’s fate episode, did エルモート’s. used the phrase 四(し)の五(ご)の言(い)う (to grumble about something trivial) which i quite liked

Today I got myself to read a lot, which I am very happy about.

Bunpro
As usually, I do my daily Bunpro reviews and added a word I saw in the japanese description of a grammar point.

Then, I read the assignment of this weeks Absolute Beginner Book Club, which went really well.

Blood Lad
I felt so good from reading the assignment, that I picked up my physical copy of my favourite Manga, Blood Lad and read a couple pages from it. It took way more energy from me, as they use a lot of slang and the characters have different dialects.

So I wanted to read something else. I tried the 1st week of the Beginner Book Club and didn’t really like the choice of the Manga, so I did not intend to read along. But now I got the book and do exactly that. So I read last weeks assignment on that. I didn’t really get everything, but it was still easier than Blood Lad in my opinion.

Didn’t think I would have a lot of time to read the last couple of days because I decided to catch the Oppenheimer-Barbie double feature yesterday but I had a bit more time to read than I thought while waiting for the movies to play. Sadly the actual contents of the book (insanely cringeworthy attempts to ‘rehabilitate’ the main pair’s supposed relationship in the the eyes of the listeners who apparently enjoy their radio show for its candor but can’t stand the thought that they might actually dislike each other) has proven to be less than enjoyable but it is what it is.

Word of the Day: 蘭学(らんがく) - Dutch studies or studies of Western knowledge. The history of Japan’s interaction with the Western world (which, for multiple centuries, was literally only with the Dutch) becomes extremely apparent with this word…

• 大(おお)あり = very much like that
• 卒(そつ)なく = flawlessly
• さらけ出(だ)す = to lay bare; to unhide. Physically, in context; but can also mean to reveal secrets.
• 出(い)で立(た)ち = outfit. Kana-only in context.
• 切(き)れ味(あじ) = sharpness; cutting ability / quick-wittedness
• 相撃(あいう)ち = simultaneously striking each other
• 切(き)りのいい = a good place to leave off. Like a place to easily 区切(くぎ)り.
• 昇降機(しょうこうき) = elevator
• 垢抜(あかぬ)け = sophistication. Removal of dirt.
• 虚脱(きょだつ) = mental numbness
• 酸鼻(さんび) = gruesome. Somewhat similar to 惨(むご)たらしい (惨(むご)い). Hurtful smell, just like acid, in the nose.

• 蒐集(しゅうしゅう) = collecting. Like for interest or research of collecting stuff. Since I see this the second time, I shall take notes. First Kanji is specifically for collecting.
• 散会(さんかい) = ending a meeting. Like 解散(かいさん), but different and more specific Kanji.

Day 22! Finished the week’s assignment for 9-nine-, another 13k or so characters read. I’m enjoying the start of this one quite a bit, here’s hoping its jump in ratings on VNDB is indeed accurate. Found this CG pretty nice too:

I’ve been reading a bunch recently, played a little more Pikmin 4 yesterday which has a lot more dialog to read than I expected, and I’m pretty hooked on 硝子の塔の殺人 now that it’s picking up so I’m fitting in more pages of that too. On top of the VN stuff, I made it to 27% last night! That’s another roughly 8k characters read in that after my VN reading yesterday. Quite pleased I’m managing so much.

The big developments keep coming, I guess that’s just not going to stop until the end at this point. There’s a small chance I might not be able to read tomorrow but it’s low, I think I’ll be fine. Ahhhhh mandatory responsibilities are fun, aren’t they.
