finally finished part one of case one of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) 2

Been meaning to say, I’m watching this with a lot of interest! I hope you enjoy. That’s more or less the only Ace Attorney game I never played, on account of its lack of English release (I know it got the fan patch but I never did it). I should really consider that as something to read in the near future, though I think I’d need to replay the first for a refresher. I hope you enjoy it! People seem to consider it one of the best of the whole 逆転 series.

I got chapter 4 of あん finished yesterday. I’m glad the next reading starts in a few days because that 4th chapter felt like a cliffhanger.

7月7日 It’s Tanabata and my wish is to be able to keep up with this reading pace, haha.

Finished this week’s chapter 1 reading for 夜カフェ5. It’s nice how fast I can get through the chapters in one sitting now - about 15~20 minutes. I remember spending close to an hour when I first started the series.

I’ve got this week’s reading for 3 book clubs done. Just waiting for the opportunity to really be able to sit down and concentrate on 予言の島 because it feels significantly harder than everything else I’m reading. I would grade it upper intermediate or closer to advance level in terms of language (especially the religious jargon and Seto Inland Sea dialects) and overall writing style.

These last two chapters have been the moment we’ve been waiting for since the beginning of volume 2. What a beautiful, touching scene! アクア pulling ルビー out of the darkness, finally revealing what he has been up to all this time…

… only for the last panel to really stoke the fandom flames. There is clearly a glass door between them when she says it but that’s a big potential Y I K E S. I guess I have to applaud 赤坂アカ and 横槍メンゴ for the audacity? Even if we think it’s 五郎 and さりな there, that’s still sus as hell. I’m sure this is just trolling but good grief.

八咫烏ちゃん is completely right; now アクア really has something to lose.

Edit: now that I think about it, doesn’t Japanese mythology have two separate siblings-as-lovers stories? イザナギ and イザナミ, 天照あまてらす and 月読ツクヨミ… This series has quite clear parallels, even called out, to those mythologies.

風の谷のナウシカ１(p. 27-34)

Planning to dedicate the coming weekend to catch up with this. Tons of lookups for words like 今宵こよい – I don’t think I’ve ever read / heard it before? Also nice to see words like 自治権じちけん and 族長ぞくちょう where I could guess the meaning just based on knowing the kanji.

Thanks! I wouldn’t have noticed this otherwise. This is one of the first romcoms (and err… harems…) that I read in English decades ago. Might be fun to re-read in Japanese, I’ll give it a go. Should be relatively easy?

Another day, another chapter of ふらいんぐうぃっち. Today I got a little tired while reading the whole chapter, maybe because a lot happened. Also, on page 85 someone says たんげタイプだった. (It was a tange? Type). I googled a bit but couldn’t really make sense of it, if anyone might know what that means I would probably run a lap across the room from joy

didn’t have as much time today so didn’t even get to pick up 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２today, sadly. watched some more yakuza (there was actually more left than i thought, tho not by much) and did another fate episode, ヨハン’s. a little on the harder side, cos he’s a character who tends to ramble on a lot, but not too difficult. sort of wish i had an earlier iteration of him so i could get some context. also read this article on how a landslide and rain disaster affected someone’s life, at the time and over the five years up to now.

I haven’t tried reading it yet, but I extracted vocabulary/frequency information for the first four volumes.

Vocabulary isn’t everything, but knowing the most frequently used 1,000 words in the series’ll give you about 80–85% coverage.

• わななく = to tremble e.g. with fear, emotion. Somehow like 戦(おのの)く.
• 沸(わ)く = to boil like hot water, also emotion. Feels like 湧(わ)く.
• 迸(ほとばし)る = to gush forth. No Furigana. I have seen the word some time before, so I guess.
• かいつまむ = to summarize = 掻(か)い摘(つま)む
• まっさら = fresh; brand new. Think 真(ま)っ更(さら), though the Kanji changed to 真(ま)っ新(さら).
• 直感(ちょっかん) = intuition; hunch
• 居(い)ても立(た)っても居(い)られない = unable to contain oneself
• 発破(はっぱ)を掛(か)ける = to motivate with strong words. Actually, ハッパ in context.
• 亀裂(きれつ) = crack; crevice. First Kanji is 亀(かめ).

• ようつばと！４ - Finished chapter 23. They went fishing, and there were a lot of fish names, technical names, bait and so on, that I don’t even know in English. So quite a tough one

• Satori Reader - Finished Akiko’s american foreign exchange, finally! Wow, that took a while (I started it in February), both because it’s very long (134 episodes) and because I haven’t been very consistent with reading it. But now for the past month I’ve been reading 2 episodes per day and that really works for me. Don’t want to binge it because I enjoy the grammar explainations. And since I forget about them 5 minutes after reading them, might as well spreading out the learning in time. Hopefully eventually some things will stick Definitely a good story for a beginner (I had started with Sakura and Suzuki’s love story and that was too hard, because it uses a lot of casual speech, not optimal when you don’t even know how normal speech is like)

Day 7! I read close to 14,000 characters today of 9-Nine for the VN spinoff club! It’s very character focused at the moment, which is nice because we generally have been agreeing in the club that it does these smaller moments better than the overarching plot.

Just taking photo booth pictures in awkward poses, normal anime style nonsense, but it’s cute all the same. I’m pretty happy with my reading progress to be able to sit down and read this much consistently if the writing is on the easier side. This used to be an amount saved only for special days where I really pushed myself. It also highlights the difference material can make – looking at words I mine especially, I can do this amount of reading and get a similar amount of words from what I get in 1 or 2 stories in Ten Nights of Dreams, which are very short, heh.

I’m rereading the book Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon. The first episode of the anime left me wanting more of the series.

I’d like to preface by saying I’m skimming at some parts of the story, but I’m rather pleasantly surprised by how few lookups I’m having this time compared to one year ago. When I read this book back then, I’d look up every single word no matter how ever slightly unsure I was of the reading or meaning (thx to yomichan for fast lookups), but now I know most of the words. Maybe exactly because I tend to do that, I’ve come to know the words more and more to the point that I can’t not know them.

Of course, there are some low-frequency words I don’t have carved into my liver yet, like 単衣(ひとえ) = unlined kimono or plants like 躑躅(つつじ) = azalea. (I don’t know many plants in general even in English, and I enjoy looking up plants and flowers, so if I don’t know it I will most certainly look them up for images, haha )

Another day, another ~30 pages on さくらいろの季節, taking us to page 198 and 67%! Finished chapter five and got some character development, but the sports arc has still not finished (how do I keep ending up with so many sports-related scenes in every novel I read. it’s a conspiracy). Poor めぐみ got so nervous and upset during a practice match that she threw up, fled the building without saying anything to anyone, and then yelled at her sister who’d been coaching her, leading to a very sad heart-to-heart, but things seem to be maybe looking up as we go into chapter 6. Played video games for a few hours (kana-only sucks, as much as kanji hurt my brain they really are so useful) and dug out a couple of manga volumes to try my hand at for later while I wait on my next order of books to come in.

I got a lot of reading done yesterday! I’m hoping I can do the same today. Yesterday I looked at how I was reading JoJo a year or two ago and it’s really motivating me to put things into overdrive!

Seasons was about 小暑(しょうしょ) which is the current season. I hate the name lol. Apparently this one sticks around until about August 6 and then the weather cools down? Seasons said to prepare for more heat and to deal with the heat, we should try as they’ve done since the Edo period, which is drink 甘酒(あまざけ). I’m not so sure about that advice.

The nice thing about this stretch in Nausicaa was that I didn’t feel like I hit any big roadblocks- the difficulty remained about the same throughout.

JoJo was great! I really appreciate Kira’s looks. The anime made him look too perfect imo, but in the manga, due to the lankiness and the style, he looks more like an average person rather than a model, which fits so much better with his character. I also got to the start of the Cinderella arc, which I’m a bit meh about, but it was interesting to see Joseph try to help Yukako.

I also read a bit of Zucca x Zucca . It’s a manga by a friend of a friend. It’s about a Takarazuka otaku. It’s surprisingly relatable due to the otaku fervor and it’s also interesting to learn about the kinds of things that go along with Takarazuka. I’ve been interested in the trope since learning that the Lobelia girls school in Ouran is based off them. It was a lot easier to read than I expected, so I might read this whole volume. My friend also gave me another manga by the same friend about her ? supportive? fellow otaku? husband. It’s got a plot and higher text density, so I might only read the first chapter.
