Seasons had a delightful pun- 味がよいからあじ。 Aji are a tasty fish

Even though it was a long day, I was able to get a chapter of JoJo in and a bit of Nausicaa. This arc might be a bit more difficult than I originally thought. There’s a bit of economics/business talk and the phrasing/words aren’t what I expected but also the middle school character’s speech seems like it might have many(?) errors? I noticed in the anime that they show his youth/lack of language ability when he writes stuff in a notebook but doesn’t know how to write simple kanji.

Nausicaa was short but fun. I mostly stopped there in order to get good sleep (success!). I liked when the older guys in the other ship were messing around with Nausicaa’s copilot. Silly wholesome elderly characters seem to be something Miyazaki excels with.

June 27th!

Today I read 2 and a bit more pages of コンビニ人間. I’m finding this weeks section much tougher to read than last week. I’m not sure if thats because it is harder, or whether I’m just super tired this week.

The sportsani blog I follow on tumblr reblogged kazetsuyo art today so now I wanna read that, but also あの空はキミの䞭 (bought with my CDJapan points) got here today so I wanna read that
Augh! Why can’t I read faster!

  • a bit of the preview for 震える倩秀. I plan on reading more of it tomorrow (too tired today), bit it seems super interesting so far. This is almost certainly going on my wishlist.
  • アオのハコ ch 8. I knew this chapter was gonna be great, and it was!
The club’s pace is too slow for me, so I’m kinda considering just reading it on my own, but on the other hand, I know reading with the club will keep me consistent and mean I’ll actually finish it, whereas there’s a much greater chance that, if I read it on my own, I’ll get partway through, get distracted, and then just forget about it. Ah, what to do

  • the rest of バッテリヌ vol 7
  • 2.43 枅陰高校男子バレヌ郚 第〜話のアむキャッチずあらすじ
  • 15 pages of ステヌゞ・オブ・ザ・グラりンド, starting ch 2 and leaving off on pg 94. Things have definitely been picking up now since Tsurugi moved back toward the end of ch 1. Yukito is quite content with his peaceful, ordinary life, but Tsurugi is not having it lol and drags him unwilling back into baseball.
Some vocab of note:

虚を突く (きょを぀く) [expression, カ五] to attack the enemy in their unguarded moment
芚える (おがえる) [他䞀] to feel

Read:

  • アオのハコ ch 8 - incredible chapter, truly
  • ロゞカずラッカセむ ch 7, 8 - suffering
  • コンビニ人間 pg 9 → 11 - i tried to read the whole section but kept getting distracted and then it was suddenly midnight

Yeah, it’s hard too since the manga is a weekly release and hasn’t really had any breaks. It also (knock on wood) doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon, which means the club would just be about 2 years behind current release perpetually.

But, it seems like there’s been less interest in volume 2 so far, so maybe this club kinda peters out at some point. I’m still enjoying it and reading w the club, but also in the “could definitely read this much faster” boat. Maybe we revisit speed again if there’s enough interest for vol 3

One thing I’ve noticed on the wk forums is that there are a lot of book clubs for reading stuff from the beginning (just the first volume, like with the level clubs, or read 1 ch/wk forever in an offshoot club), but not a lot of clubs for stuff that’s currently being published. I guess part of that could be people prefer volumes, and fewer people are going to want to get caught entirely up on a series just to join in the current discussion. But, I think that would be a kinda cool concept: to have a club work pretty hard to catch up to a series, and then just have a group reading it weekly/biweekly as new chapters get published.

Even with something like yotsuba, which many people are caught up on, it seems like most people are waiting for the next volume to release to read it though (myself included, though I won’t say those chapters don’t tempt me), so maybe there’s just not enough people interested in the weekly style for something like that to work.

If that’s something you’re worried about, I’m planning to start a club that reads a chapter of JoJo a week starting in January. So it wouldn’t be the only club like that. The manga is still ongoing, although at a chapter per month release now.

I think part of it is a scarcity issue. People may not like to read digitally or can’t use a vpn. Or if they want the physical copy, it’s prohibitively expensive to buy weekly instead of just when the vol comes out.

Oh that’s gonna be behind like forever forever  (sign me up, though )

Yeah. I wouldn’t say i’m worried worried about it, since obviously plenty of clubs have found success reading like this. It’s just something that I’ve come to enjoy a lot with my english reading/watching communities that I haven’t quite seen reflected in anything here. Like, reading and talking about Blue Box, Nagatoro, Komi, One Piece, etc with my friends as those chapters come out has been a ton of fun. Especially with anime, watching episodes directly together with people and then getting to go on twitter and see the firestorm of memes and discussion has become a huge part of why I enjoy reading/watching stuff (shout out 氎星の魔女, which is currently making up about 70% of my twitter feed in both english and jp).

Yeah, this is definitely true. The main uh.. “resources” that people use to read a high volume of currently running stuff in english definitely fall into the gray area at best, and for some of these series I honestly am not even sure where they even get raws? Like the english fan translation for komi is a week ahead of the official digital japanese release somehow?

Some series are definitely better than others, most of the current stuff I read in jp is on pocket shonen magazine’s site, which is usually fairly reasonable with prices as long as you can deal with their annoying web viewer (I think most are like 40 or 50pts per chapter, and points are technically 1.1pt : 1円)

The pro wrestling thread is probably the most “current content” focused “club”, haha, though that’s largely due to the nature of pro wrestling, which makes the current stuff always way more exciting. We occasionally read/watch old stuff in there, usually on our own time and not as a group, but the vast majority of the discussion ranges from very current to stuff that happened within the last several months.

With manga, I unfortunately tend to get frustrated reading it chapter by chapter because individual chapters can feel so short, though I suppose maybe the extra work it takes to read something in Japanese could make me feel less inclined to want to binge-read

I’d say it might be worth just going for it and starting a club and seeing who shows up! There are probably other folks who’d be interested but who never considered it before, or who never publicly voiced a desire for one so it never happened until someone organized it.

Nah, just a twenty year commitment . For me at least if I run it the whole time. People are welcome to pop in and out as they please of course though

I feel like I should start keeping an actual list of people to @ since probably 5 people have already said they’re in
. In any case though, 2024/1/1 Monday is the date to watch! It’ll be either here (unless they nuke the forums or kick me for criticism) or Natively’s forums if I can’t post here.

I’m working on making comprehension questions to help people get a better grip on the Japanese that doesn’t translate well in the subs/dubs/scans

That is such a mood. I used to be part of my college’s anime club and it was really great being able to watch and talk with each other. With my other friends, we tend to binge and go brain dead from all the binging lol.

How is 氎星の魔女? I keep forgetting to check out more Gundam. I’ve only seen the original movie trilogy.

I don’t think any of those places count as gray

There was a big One Piece bust a few years ago. Essentially, someone in the production process sells or posts the leaks (I believe it was selling to Chinese publishers in OP’s case) and then they get distributed from there.

Ah, don’t they have an app too? I’m under the impression that it lets people read something like a chapter a day. Pixiv might also be worth checking out if you want more material. There are a number of series being considered for physical publishing that are free until they get popular enough. That’s how おじさたず猫 got published. Then there’s bookwalker and similar websites that have free previews or time limited digital copies. I don’t use them too much though since I’m trying to read through my book collection and I still have 200+ vols to go lol :joy::sob::skull:

Today’s Bonus Colours

玺こん - Dark/Deep Blue

耐色かちいろ - Pounded (Indigo-Leaf) Colour / Victory Colour
(Very dark blue, darker than 玺 but not as dark as 黒橡. Can also be read: かちんいろ.

The name comes from 搗 which refers to the pounding of indigo leaves into a dye. かちいろ can be written as 搗色 or 耐色, but it could also be written as 勝色, ‘Victory Colour’, because of this the colour started to become associated with warlords in historic tales. All three can also be read as か぀.

Nowadays 耐色 is also the name of another colour, a dark brown, but that’s read as: かっしょく. Though in modern writing 耐色 is much more likely to refer to this dark brown colour than the dark blue colour.)

Listen first and is the priority. Prologue was listened and read a while ago. Discussion thread is in Natively.

  • 駆(か)け巡(めぐ)る = to fly about. Somewhat like 駆(か)け回(たわ)る.

  • 劎咳(ろうがい) = pulmonary tuberculosis (肺結栞(はいけっかく)) in traditional Chinese medicine

摔跀 (shuāi jiāo) to trip and fall / to wrestle / wrestling (sports)

Chinese, but look like that anyway in Japanese locale. Maybe the publisher wasn’t sure whether it would render correctly?

Read:

  • コンビニ人間 pg 11 → 14, finished this week’s section. I couldn’t find the end phrase as I was skimming to highlight it, so I thought I had like way more to read than I did. But then I just kinda stumbled into it. I’m enjoying this book a lot and I want to keep going!! but I still have to catch up on other stuff too
  • あん chapter 1 - lil harder than コンビニ人間, but enjoying it so far

That’s definitely an option! I’d probably want to do it with something that’s either pretty popular on its own, or has a popular recent animation, and is also fairly short to catch up with. Maybe something like Bocchi the Rock! (~70 chapters of 4コマ, natively lvl 28) or Oshi no Ko (~130 chs, natively lvl 29) would have enough pull. Like I remember kaguya doing fairly well in the IBC polls for a similar type of popular show (manga has since ended), but those both skew a little hard for most people to ready quickly enough to catch up, probably.

Personally, I’ve really been wanting to catch up and read Skip and Loafer now that that anime is over (~60 chapters, natively lvl 24, and on pocket magazine site, but only 1 new chapter per month).

Oh yeah! I’ve looked at a couple things on Pixiv, but it gets kinda weird once things do get picked up for publishing. I noticed sometimes chapters seem to get permanently locked, which is what happened with that seal manga. I had to go buy a few random chapters on another site to read them. Some sites have the couple most recent chapters free as well, and you only need to pay if you want to read the backlog. It’s so inconsistent based on site/publisher and series; Would have to really play it by ear depending on the series

less topical replies

I definitely know the brain dead from binging feel lol. There’s something about spacing shows/manga out over some time frame that I think makes me appreciate them a bit more I think. Binging through some shows is fine (or necessary for longer stuff), but there’s others that I’ve really enjoyed taking my time with and talking to people about as we watched them. Going back and looking at particular shots for composition or color use, or rewinding to catch particular bits of dialogue and compare them to the subs, I love getting to see what details other people notice that I might have missed. It’s hard to get that level of detail when you’re going through like a full season in a day (not that we don’t also do that sometimes )

In the legal sense? absolutely cut and dry, you are correct they aren’t even remotely close to legal. Morally? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ there’s at least some genuine discussion to be had with some sites and projects, especially those focusing on stuff that wouldn’t be popular enough to ever get a licensed translation/release, or older stuff (especially shoujo) that’s english releases are out of print and ludicrously expensive on the resale market. Like until the new fruits basket anime started and there was an english reprint, one of the most iconic shoujo series of all time would run you like $40/50 a volume in english if you wanted to read it officially (one of my friends in HS paid I think like $1200 for the full series) Or the english release of mushishi will currently run you like 70/80 per volume, if you can even find some of them

It’s been great! It’ll be interesting to take a step back after it finishes and kinda think about the big picture of whether it was “good” or not, but it’s been a super fun roller coaster to be on for the last few seasons. My gut feeling is that 26 episodes is just too short for them to fit in all of the side stuff that they clearly wanted to include, but the main through-line of the show has been incredibly strong. It takes a lot of cues from Utena and works them into a slightly more modern format that I think works very well. Animation and music have been incredible (if you are a sakuga person there are some drop dead gorgeous cuts in basically every episode). Even if it ends up not quite pulling off as much as the show wants to I think it’s been one of the most interesting anime-original shows in a long time, and definitely will be one of the main shows people recommend as an entry point into gundam.

vaguely spoilery but not plot specific spoilery note: The show spends a lot of time focusing on how stupid revenge, karma, and notions of deserving punishment are, which is honestly really refreshing. Not excusing or asking for forgiveness or doling out punishment for the bad things people have done, nor wallowing in self-pity or grief, but trying to moving forward and trying to reduce the harm done by those actions. There’s a phrase that gets repeated a lot, and for a while it feels very empty and cliche, but by the time real shit starts to go down you can tell that they are not just pretty words. It really is the spiritual heart of the show and its main character.

Also Suletta is just a perfect lil tanuki look at her. LOOK AT HER

It is basically a completely new timeline that you can jump into without having watched any other gundam though, only a few tangential connections or references to other series. Just make sure you watch the prologue first if you decide to watch it, it adds a lot of tension to what might otherwise feel like a fairly slow start to the show.

・薬屋のひずりごず 9 (64% → 77%)

Instead of going back home for summer vacation, I’m having family visit me instead :3 Very nice of them to travel all the way here. It’s great to see them again! Also, nothing beats mom’s homemade food :chopsticks:

Today there was one unusual furigana word: 象城(トレヌドマヌク)
In this case with the meaning: “the trademark characteristic of a particular character”

Thanks! Yeah, probably better safe than sorry.

June 28th!

Today I finally finished reading this weeks assignment of コンビニ人間 for the IBC Primer club.
I only read 2 pages today, but this book is a very tough read for me, so I’m ok with it only being a small amount.

My bad, I thought you only meant from a legal side, that’s on me. I totally get what you mean about morally. I think it’s really clear with video games especially as a lot of retro stuff is stuff people would gladly pay for, even at the rate of a new game, but the lack of ability to is what drives people to make illegal copies.

I totally understand. I did my undergrad thesis on piracy in the anime community at large. Essentially, if the media is available at a fair price and lacks difficult technical barriers (online workarounds, proxy shipping, etc), people would pay for it.

I feel like enjoyment is more important than quality personally, so that’s promising

OH HO?!? OwO

:eyes: :eyes:

Re spoilery stuff

That sounds really satisfying. I’ve been playing video essays on the same topics lately and getting a lot out of them.

Catgirl!! :heart_eyes_cat:

Sweet, thanks!

I will be checking my streaming services when I get home  This has been the best endorsement for the show I’ve seen so far

Seasons was about a type of jasmine flower- 梔子(くちなし). In flower language it means to bring joy or something along those lines.

I read another chapter of JoJo. This arc feels so much shorter in the manga than in the anime, it’s pretty refreshing. There are also some little things that I can’t tell if they’re actually in the anime, but just blink and miss or not there at all. They add a nice touch and I’m glad to take the time to read them.

I could have read more last night, but I decided to get a proper amount of sleep instead. So far today I don’t regret it lol.

Yeah! seems like we’re coming at it from the same kind of understanding but words are just hard sometimes :upside_down_face: (also if you have any writing from that you’d be willing to share I’d love to read it  it’s a topic I’ve like read some bits and pieces about, but I haven’t read a ton about it wrt anime community specifically, despite that obviously being important historically and currently)

  • コンビニ人間 (pg0-10). First book club :person_cartwheeling:

  • コヌヒヌが冷めないうちに (pg0-16). While waiting for next week’s book club to post, couldn’t stop the urge to buy yet another book :walking_man: Sentences are definitely a bit nuanced and taking me longer per page. Roughly 30 min of read?

  • Some light novel (~10pg)

big mood lol

Thanks! That’s quite sweet of you. After I finished college, I ended up not publishing after I graduated because a friend made an offhand comment about something or the other and when I looked into it, it was the exact same process and reasoning for many subscription models. Tv channels, phone hacking, books, it’s all the same exact trends time and time again. The way out is a new platform with enough major players to prevent monopolies or too much cooperation. The only big difference with the past is the more international aspect, but honestly that ends up being more of a technical barrier than unique. People are either knowledgeable enough in a language to translate or they make it up/rely on resources such as dictionaries/Google Translator/etc. Since it’s just a continuation of a trend, I didn’t feel like I discovered anything and therefore I didn’t have something worth publishing.

When I tried scanning あの空はキミの䞭, Bookmeter actually brought it up! No idea why I couldn’t find it literally any other way, then, even typing in the ISBN. I copy-pasted both the 10 and the 13 in turn and there was nothing? All right. Well, I’m glad I do still get to have it on there.

  • 27 pages of ステヌゞ・オブ・ザ・グラりンド, finishing ch 2 and starting ch 3, leaving off on pg 124. Oh, Yukito quite literally gets dragged back to baseball, this is great. I’m definitely enjoying this book so far.
I’m halfway through now! I think I’m getting used to the writing, so hopefully, time and energy willing, it won’t take me too many more days to finish.
  • this article on the baseball use of トンボ. I remembered seeing it in 2.43 ch 3 and seeing it could also mean “somersault,” so I was like, “Well this is when everyone’s going home or getting ready to after the 球技倧䌚, I guess it makes sense for them to be messing around
?” and shrugged it off. Nope, they were raking the ground to level the dirt of the diamond. Although, the usual collocation is トンボをかける or トンボがけをする, but Kabei-sensei wrote トンボを転がす, so
? Maybe they were messing around with the rakes? Well, at least I’ll understand it in the context of baseball now, even if I’m still not entirely sure what Kabei-sensei was saying the 野球郚員 were doing there.
