Yesterday I finished scoping out the week 3 reading for the 999 club so I could make the post and such, and today I started looking at next week’s reading. It continues to be fun going back through it all again, and definitely a nice sense of progress I’d be playing more if Hades weren’t occupying my entire brain but what can you do

Summary post

The challenge is going well so far! Haven’t missed a day yet with Spanish or Japanese.

With Spanish, I’ve just been making steady progress on Cantoras without much else to report. The book is definitely getting easier.

With Japanese, I’ve been moderately busy with my Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling translations, but I also managed to finish the first story in Read Real Japanese Fiction!

It’s called 神様 by 川上弘美. I found it very pleasant! There was quite a bit of grammar/vocab that I have still yet to encounter, so I did lean pretty heavily on the translations (and the notes pointing out the nuance of small details were very much appreciated).

I’m considering alternating between the fiction and essay Read Real Japanese books, because it would be nice to get more practice with both, and I believe that both are arranged in order of difficulty. I’m slow enough, my grammar will probably be substantially better by the time I reach the end of both.

As far as TJPW goes, I finished translating two shows! The first was their show in Los Angeles on March 31, which was probably the easiest “big show” translation that I have done thus far (thanks in part to a good chunk of it being in English, though I had to add a few translation notes explaining a couple of the wrestlers’ attempts at English that might be confusing to English speakers due to 和製英語 causing problems from the opposite direction, haha).

The photos from this show weren’t as good as usual (I don’t think they had their normal camera crew due to the show happening in America), but the show itself was fun! Here’s a photo of one moment that I enjoyed:

Miu Watanabe and “Big Kaiju” Shoko Nakajima faced the monstrous duo of Wasteland War Party (Max the Impaler and Heidi Howitzer). A lot of the match was Miu being very scared of Max, haha, but finding the bravery to face them. Miu and Shoko ultimately came up short in the end, though, and lost the match when Max pinned Shoko. Afterward, Max grabbed Shoko’s tail, and Miu carefully took it back, pulling the tail out of their hands.

The other translation I finished was for TJPW’s April 8 show, which had a contract signing for (double champ!!) Mizuki vs Nao Kakuta at the beginning, which meant a little more work for me (in pro wrestling, a contract signing is where the wrestlers officially agree to the match and usually also get interviewed and talk to each other and generally set the stakes for the match to come, which makes it one of the most pivotal things to translate. Sometimes someone goes through the table. Generally not in TJPW, though ).

In just a few hours, TJPW is going to be doing a big show in Korakuen Hall with a couple title matches and some other fun stuff, so that’ll probably keep me busy, reading-wise, for the next week or so!

Read the entries on あげる, but it seems things have changed since this dictionary has been written. It’s very VERY rude to use やる・てやる with people. It’s used for saying when you do something for non-living things like animals or plants. To use it for a person means you’re equating that person with an animal. I haven’t even heard it used among family members. In the cases I’ve heard, it’s always been あげる.

These types of comments would be super useful in the book club; I’m only saying that because it seems you are reading along with the club. Discussion in the club threads is what makes the club useful for people stumbling on it in the future. So I hope you’ll share your comments over there too. (Not saying you can’t share them here, please do, but it would be lovely to have them in the club too.)

@natarin Yeah, I looked at the Mario font and started to decipher it and then decided my life is too short to have to struggle through that font to read tiny amounts of Japanese text. B$'s font that has a few weird quirks is like a walk in the park in comparison.

Since I got the three game mario collection (sunshine and galaxy along with 64), I will probably try Japanese for galaxy too that I’ve also played a couple of times before. However I’ll go English for sunshine because I’ve never actually played that one (except for trying it out at a friend’s house for a couple of hours once). ^^

Finished Harry Potter Book 2 yesterday and started with Book 3. Missed reading 2 days this week, unfortunately. But well, we have holiday time and a lot of other fun stuff to do, so I think I can forgive myself. Trying to get back to routine from now on

I finished Corpse Party 2 Dead Patient and got the normal ending. Actually it’s just the first chapter but I don’t expect this game to ever be finished. The Japanese was pretty easy but I still had to look up some hospital related vocabulary. The font used in the game was not that easy to read.

Now that ボッコちゃん is finished I continued reading Vampire Hunter D light novel.

So I accidentally read the second half of Komi-san volume 3. It is nice to read something extensively. If I wasn’t reading paper copies, I would probably use a built in dictionary occasionally (I do it for English too because there are so few words I don’t know at all. Usually I look up less than 1 word per book), but I am reading on paper, so I looked up nothing.

Komi has been pretty convenient when I air Kiro, my cat. xD I have to be reading something that doesn’t need look ups because it is too cold outside still to settle down for long. (Only a couple to a few degrees above freezing still (Celsius).) But I want Kiro to get to go outside and explore. Soon enough he’ll get to go out all by himself.

Anyway, the dictionary club finally hit the main entries and these I’ll focus on reading only one a day (unless I need to catch up or know I will need to skip). I really could have read two today because the one wasn’t anything new at all. But eh.

一斤染いっこんぞめ - One Catty Dye (a soft pink)

Since crimson dye used a lot of safflower to produce it was expensive and considered to be only a colour for royal people to wear, no commoners allowed, it was a forbidden colour. It was permitted that the peasant folk were allowed to wear a lighter version, which is this colour. It was achieved by using one catty (斤) (600g) of dye for every two tan* (反) of fabric, hence the name.

*反 is a variable quantity of fabric that was just under 30cm wide but depending on what the fabric was for determined how long the fabric was. For general clothes it was just over 6m long (or could be more), for more formal clothes like kimono and haori it was required to be longer.

Today I read Chapter 73 of Shadows House. Only 1 more chapter left in this volume, and I’m really keen to find out what happens next, but I’m too tired to read any more tonight so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow!
