I spent a lot of time on a personal project, so I’m happy that I still managed to read every day this week!
Mostly it was Tadoku books, but I also managed some pages of The Tileworld Chronicles.

My current strategy is to read a sentence, try to guess the meaning, if that doesn’t help use ichi.moe to cut up the sentence. Because it is cut up, it is easier to see how the sentence flows. I am somewhat passable in pronouncing words seperately, but a sentence feels like one long word and leaves me confused on how to handle it.

(Like, even if there is a new one coming out on like the 19th or something this month and I’m unreasonably excited for it considering I’ve got a whole 11-3/4 volumes to go before I get to it…) I haven’t even finished 2.43 and that’s literally the first thing I started reading! It’s been two years, and that’s only 6 volumes. I read way too slow for this still, I can rarely finish something before another book is stealing the “#1 priority” spot out from under it. I’m convinced it was a miracle I actually finished HQ. I can’t even finish manga series 1/3 its length, much less any novel series apparently

Week 1 Recap

I had a moderately successful start, hitting my goals five out of seven days. I read a lot of NHK Easy News, a little from a textbook I used when I took formal lessons, and a little from 美知子の星空 (Michiko’s Starry Sky).

I noticed that my kanji recognition has improved immensely, and that I’m often able to get the gist of an article or story even if I don’t understand every detail. I also noticed that I need to work on my grammar .

As always, I’m aiming to read something in both Japanese and Spanish every day (this chart will almost definitely not be kept up to date)! So far, I have kept up an unbroken daily streak of practicing immersion in both languages every single day this year. Will this be the challenge that breaks me?

…Honestly, if it’s going to happen, it’ll probably be now, because October and November are historically the busiest months by far for me. I’m doing a daily drawing challenge for October, and I’ll be busy with National Novel Writing Month in November. But I survived last year and the year before, so I think I got this!

What I'll be reading in Japanese:

My main priority is, as always, my Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling translations. I translate the in-ring promos and post-match comments for every TJPW show, using 週刊プロレス’s transcripts of the wrestler’s speech alongside the video footage, so it’s sort of both reading/listening practice, but is mostly reading.

I’ll be counting the TJPW translations for this challenge, and that’ll probably make up the vast majority of my reading.

Besides that, I did start reading しまなみ誰そ彼 along with the LGBT+GSRM book club here on the forum. I’m reading this pretty extensively, though I do have a copy that I ran through Mokuro, so I’m using Yomichan and such, but I haven’t been spending more than a minute or two per page, and I probably won’t be posting much in the club thread. I feel like my comprehension is decent, though!

I also have a goal of finally finishing 大海原と大海原 volume 3. It’s a bit ambitious to aim for that now, but I sort of want to try to finish it before December? I’m running nearly two years behind the book club for it, haha. Manga has gotten so much easier for me to read now, it should go quicker now than it has in the past.

And finally, I’d like to finish Read Real Japanese Fiction by the end of the challenge period! I’ve read the first short story, but that’s it.

Besides those things, I’m still trying to catch up on A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar book club, so hopefully I’ll be getting back into that soon, but I won’t be counting it for the purposes of this challenge, so that’ll be happening on top of the other reading I’m doing.

I also won’t be counting any of the Tobira reading or exercises that I’m doing.

I have a couple additional translation projects that I’ve backburnered for the time being that I might end up working on, though… If I do, I will count those!

What I'll be reading in Spanish:

In the last challenge, I started reading a novel called Las malas by Sosa Villada. The writing is pretty tough, so it’s been slow-going, but the book is good and I intend to finish it! I’m guessing it’ll keep me occupied for the entire challenge period.

If I do miraculously finish it and need to find something else to read, I’ll probably look for an easier book next, though I don’t really have anything in particular in mind.

Today I ended up selling my copies of しろくまカフェ and 火ノ丸相撲, as a final send-off to the OCJB (operation clean out javerend’s bookshelf) from last challenge. That brings my 積読本 (physical) stack down to a mere 79!!! That’s the lowest it’s been in a long long time. Still not quite within striking distance of finishing everything I own, since a lot of the stuff i’ve kept is still quite hard for me (3月のライオン, 蟲師, and ナウシカ especially), but I have a bit more space and a better idea of how close I am to being able to work on those now, i think! Everything I have left is something I for sure want to finish, though. There’s a few I want to finish and might not keep afterwards, but most of them are probably permanent residents of the bookshelf.

The only series I’m not super sure about the level for is the 東方 one, so I still need to read the first volume of that to test at some point. I assume ~30, with how wonky the characters talk and how much religious vocab and/or made up fancy words are in it.

• とらドラ！pg 15 → 21 (6 pages) - still very slow, but generally following well I think. Looking at it again, I guess one thing コンビニ人間 has going for it is how short it is this is about 100 pages longer at my font size. I’m finding that I really l want to keep reading this, despite my stamina preventing me from doing so. Once I have some time to recover from last week… ohohohoh. I think I am gonna do this one, though, after looking through my test reads and feelings about the other stuff I was considering.

Finished the weeks reading of 本好き on time, and I also read a few pages of おかえり、初恋, which I got on Kindle unlimited. For today, I’m not sure yet what I’m, going to do. My goals were to finish the grammar part of a JLPT mock test, Somatome and the dictionary of basic Japanese grammar this week, since my new job starts next week. So probably will work on some grammar. I also wanted to get started on reading あん, as this week is also finally the last week so I’m almost done with the book. Might add in some lighter manga reading to all that.

idk what happened today but i didn’t get nearly as much done as usual. chores piled up on me i think. managed this week’s ouran (the lesbians have arrived! not sure they’ve aged super well tho) and finished my watch-through of kurohyou (what was that final boss, guys you were doing so well😂) but did no nhk article or aDoIG entry. tomorrow will be better!
