This post is a kind of remix of this post from July of 2017, (that’s almost seven whole years!) How much have things changed since then?
I’ll start us off.
My favorite kanji is 雨。
The design, the sound, the meaning and the reading are all so perfect. I also listen to Inabakumori who just released 私は雨 (I’m the Rain) and this song just further deepened my connection to the kanji. And I would also say that I resonate with the sad and gloomy mood that rainy days give off.
For the same reason I like 火, with the added bonus that it’s quick to scribble out with a few strokes. I actually write that in my calendar instead of “fire drill” (we do a lot of those)
and they’re not always on Tuesdays
When I first learned 火、I instantly thought “fire!” Most simple kanji end up looking like what they actually are (like 二 or 口) which is really cool and fun to think about!
I’m partial to 志. I find it easy and pleasant to write, the meaning is positive (aim, goal, will, intention), and the reading is 5 characters for one kanji (こころざし).
The stroke order of 月 is quite fun, too; Like you’re expanding from 日、giving 月 a little more personality. And not to mention, it looks like it has little legs! I believe one of the mnemonics for it also mentioned that it was running away from the sun.
@Leebo
That seems like quite a rare and important kanji. The radicals appear to be “Samurai” and “Heart”, which I’m sure pertains to the beautiful meaning that it also has.
@willthelearner
Very cute! It might actually be my second favorite just below 雨。The little 人 look like small raindrops!~
I’m not sure whether it’s my favorite but the first one I learned when getting back into Japanese during the COVID times was 今 which I like as now. It looks almost like a diamond but it isn’t symmetrical. The bottom lacking one side makes it almost look like an arrow pointing forward. There’s only now. And it only moves forward.
世 looks a bit like a simplified world map. You’ve got the equator, the bit in the top right is Eurasia, the left is the Americas, the bottom is Antarctica
I had this experience with 柵. The first time I noticed it, it was on a sign posted on a wooden fence, so I figured how beautiful it would be if it referred to the fence, and then I looked it up and it turned out to be true.
罰 is the first to come to mind. In the Evillious Chronicles at the end of the timeline They name their nuke system 罰 and use it to kill everyone, and I’ve always liked the idea that the world was destroyed by Punishment after years of sins piling up.
It’s also in a side story that had a catchy tune so I listened to it while doing homework for years, but the story is about a bunch of criminals who crime everywhere, and end up getting 罰 at the end.
It might be 光. It’s one of the first ones I’ve seen (they use it on Yugioh cards even in other languages). I also like how this kanji looks like 3 rays of light shine out from the top, making it easy to remember.
