what happened to the post with our group lists?
@charlesfm happened.
They apparently had an ooooold cached version of the post. When they edited it, everything was rolled back, by roughly two weeks, it seems
I vote that they break it, they fix it.
oh crap how do I fix it
edit: it’s in the edit history
- You go to the edit history,
- take notes of the edits that happened between yours and now
- Go to the edit before yours, select raw, copy
- Edit the post for real, paste the raw
- Apply your original edit and those of the people after you
- Save edit.
I fixed it (I think)
I was closing old tabs, saw the cache of this thread that I never finished editing, and decided to finish. Didn’t even think twice about it.
Thankfully Disqus saves edits.
I used 捕えるin the previous example, but talking with some Japanese people, they said that my sentence is unnatural (using either verb) anyway.
According to my coworkers, 捉える (とらえる, same pronunciation) is used for more abstract concepts and 捕まえる is used for “moving/elusive objects,” such as a thief/泥棒 (どろぼう). So although the words are similar and the pronunciation is the same, the kanji is different. I imagine if you used it in conversation, you’d be understood based on context. (The example under jisho.org uses both kanji 捉える, and 捕える in the example sentence with the meaning, “to grasp,” which may be a mistake?) Reference here (Japanese only).
Except it says you are level 40 instead of 42
Made it to level 23. I’m sitting in a comfy chair in a café in Concord, Massachusetts far from home, hoping I can learn the kanji for this level on my phone. I’d hate to lose my level up schedule.
It’s possible.
I did two levels entirely on my phone while I was abroad. It’s slow to type answers (mostly because of typos), but it’s doable.
Lessons themselves didn’t feel that different on the phone than on a computer screen.
pffff i’d happily reset to level 1 and take all the levels on an old cellphone of your choice if i could have money to travel even within my own country.
been stuck in the same city forever… but that will change… japan must be the first place outside here i’ll visit, and they’ll pay me to do so hopefully…
I’ve been experimenting with doing my reviews using voice recognition on my phone because I’m not a great phone typist. Especially for longer words I think it saves time.
It works better for meanings than readings, for a couple of reasons. First, you have to switch to Japanese input to get the Japanese voice recognition to work. Second, it will automatically output kanji most of the time, and switching that kanji to hiragana doesn’t work that well. Also, because it outputs kanji you’re kind of cheating because you can see if you said the right thing before clicking the enter button. But it is kind of a thrill to say a word in Japanese and have the right kanji appear.
I hope that dream comes true for you.
that sounds interesting
i’ve never turned on voice recognition / dictation, it just seems weird to me
@riverpuppy hehe just one tiny level and I’ll be the same level but I’ll probably not be able to speed it up ^^ or I’ll get problems with my vocab pile
@Kyasurin always one step ahead of me!!!
Welcome to Level 20 @saiakuma! I was just warming it up for you.
hahaha, thanks!
also, i know they’re not in our group, but the leaders of the waiting for low levelers to eat cake group are gaining on us! (me mostly, i’m so slow -_- )
@Kyasurin, @saiakuma you’re on the edge to become dead!!! yay!!!
I don’t know your exact speed but for me you two are doing just on point. Don’t put harsh standards on yourself. Just keep at it.
I remember when only Nath was on a twenty something level now there are 10 of us. sweet move team!
yes, you’re right! i mean last level was great for me, my fastest level since level 6!!!
I’m looking forward to death haha
oh no, i just realised it didn’t register starting this level yet, does it do that when you do your first reviews from the level? i always thought it was from your first lesson on the level!!!
We’re trying our best!
