4️⃣ Quartet 1 - Chapter 1 (Quartet Study Group)

Didn’t get everything I wanted done today, but that’s because I got home from work, went for my daily walk then went and had a pint with my friends.

I’m just so tired at the minute.

I covered the last grammar points, watched tokini andy, and started the workbook (didn’t realise I missed a bit of the Miyazaki page, whoops!) I hadn’t realised the workbook was scheduled for next week, but I think doing the reading comprehension immediately after the reading is the intended path.

So tomorrow is do 読んだ後で, and get the second reading done. Thursday might be a wash, and so is Friday. I won’t be finished this week but it’s a long weekend so plenty of time to catch up then.

Don’t know if it was for the same reason as me, but I got myself confused that I wrote p. 9 and then p. 11, almost forgot to do page 10! I will try to write it page 9 to 10 and so on for the upcoming chapters.

I’m almost done with week 1 too. Just need to do the workbook for reading 2. I’ve also watched the first TokiniAndy video but didn’t find it as great as that time I did Genki. Not sure if I will watch the second part.

Text 1 paragraph 2

Director Miyazaki has white hair and beard, and he wears black rimmed glasses. He has a gentle smile but when it comes to making a movie he becomes very firm. For example, the staff has to redraw the pictures until they are as he says. He saw the pictures of meat drawn by the staff and said seemingly angry “This meat looks like rubber. Is it tough? Is it soft? Think about it carefully and draw it.” A mere 4 second long scene took up to 1 year to get done.

I wasn’t sure of the meaning of the last part “1年以外かけて作ったこともあるそうだ。” what is the "こともあるそうだ” conveying? and why is there a 以外 there? I think I didn’t get it.

Happy to report that this morning during breakfast I was watching anime and picked up a line using とおりに and checked up quickly on my notes to see if I got it right. :rainbow:

I also finished the second text today and answered the questions on my notes. I still have the last question left on the 後で section. I liked the text, I was hoping for some cell talk but I enjoyed the funny anecdote very much.

Does your edition of the book say 以外? That looks like a typo. Mine says 以上, which means “more than /no less” (as in “it took more than a year”).

The そうだ in this sentence and the らしい in the one before both have the same function. They indicate that the author of this text is relaying something they’ve heard or read somewhere. I don’t think there’s a neat translation in English (native speakers of English correct me if I’m wrong), but words like supposedly/apparently/allegedly etc. serve a similar purpose.

The こともある part seems like it belongs to this grammar point. For this sentence, it means that there was an occasion when a 4-second scene took more than a year to make. Since も means “also” there’s an implication that other, similar stuff happened as well.

Awkward translation attempt:

"He apparently once got angry when he saw pictures of meat drawn by his staff and said: “This meat looks like rubber. Is it tough? Is it soft? Think about it carefully and draw it”. Furthermore, he supposedly once spent at least a year creating a scene of just 4 seconds.”

Since the bit about the rubbery meat was anecdotal, I read こともある bit as the author going this is anecdotal too

Thanks for helping me parse it out! I kinda understood the meaning of the whole but I was a bit unsure of the last part.

oh wow, it was a typo of my mind, I read it wrong and I was confused.

3.2003年に、宮崎駿のアニメ「千と千尋の神隠し」はアカデミー賞を取った。彼のストーリーは環境問題のメッセージがある。スタッフに厳しいらしい。宮崎駿は自分に厳しいだがきっかけで芸術的アニメを作る。

What I was trying to say

In 2003, Miyazaki’s anime “Spirited Away” won an Academy Award. His stories have environmental messages. He is known to be hard on his staff. Due to his self strictness, he is able to make very artistic and wonderful anime.

4.俺の国にアニメが人気があらない。アニメが幼稚と思っている大人がたくさんいると思う。でも、最近、ティーンエイジャーにもっと人気がなる。

What I was trying to say

Anime is not very popular in my country. I think this is because many adults think cartoons are childish. However, it’s becoming more popular with teenagers these days.

I’m absolutely pooped these days, but I’m getting some progress in.

Nice that you are posting your writing!
Not sure how we can make it easiest for sharing those, maybe someone has a thought, as we are about to enter the week of writing?
One possibility could be to have a home post and post all the texts grouped there, and the second post of this thread would be an editable wiki to index all the home posts?
I also don’t mind them being posted as they are written, it just has some downsides: less easy to find again, and now for example you would be blocked from posting 3 times in a row until someone else replies in the thread

Good idea, I was thinking of doing something like that for the writing section, having a single ‘home post’ I’d have all my writing bits in, however I guess I’d still need to post something to prompt people to go back to the home post to read.

Maybe 2nd post be a wiki to link to your home post?

I hope my contributions can encourage a few people. I’m not suggesting anyone has to post their own things, but maybe seeing my very basic (and probably error riddled) sentences helps with their own confidence. Making mistakes is tough, and doing so in public, and receiving criticism, is even harder.

So I prepared my post but not sure how to make it a wiki, do you know if I can do it or if only a Mod or a Regular can?

I’m a regular so I can do it if you need me to

Yes please

Just point me in the right direction

The second post of this thread  4️⃣ Quartet 1 - Chapter 1 - #2 by Akashelia

Apparently I can’t :upside_down_face: I can do it to my own posts though >_>

Okay, will try pinging the Mods then!

タスク。書いてみよう

俺が尊敬する有名人は数学者だったジョン・ホートン・コンウェイた。1937年にリヴァプールで生まれた。ケンブリッジ大学に勉強して、ハーバード大学に教授になた。

学校時、彼は内向的な人、しかし、大学時外向的になた。これがきっかけで「the world’s most charismatic mathematician」とあだ名が与えたらしい。

What I intended

A ‘famous’ person I admire is the mathematician John Horton Conway. He was born in 1937 in Liverpool. He studied at Cambridge University before becoming a professor at Harvard University.

When he was at school, he was introverted however when at uni he become an extroverted person. This apparently led to him getting the nickname “the world’s most charismatic mathematician”.

I admire him because he researched my favourite branches of maths. Thes are Group Theory and Game Theory.

He was known to be a fun person, and loved playing games. He invented the famous game “Conway’s Game of Life”. But he was also a hardworking person when he was researching.

Sadly, I never got to meet him. He passed away in 2020.

John Conway and Alan Turing inspired me to study at Cambridge University.
