Discussion Guidelines

Summary

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Participation

Will you be reading along with us this week?

  • I’m reading along
  • I’m still reading but I haven’t got to this section yet
  • I’ve read this previously but I’m here for the discussion
  • I’m reading this after the bookclub has finished

Spoilers for this part!!!

Ok I read ahead last time so here’s my unfiltered reaction as I was reading (to my friend who’s read the series):

I’m so surprised, I kind of assumed that this was a typical story about superhumans where the bad guys are other humans and the kids are being experimented on or something.

Well now I can’t stop noticing their shoes all the time. Thanks for that, soggyboy. :stuck_out_tongue:

Summary

Very well translated. :stuck_out_tongue:

But yes, people see now why I was curious as to know who was still unaware of the series’ premise. :slightly_smiling_face:

Now might be a good time to have another look at the cover art for the anime

Anime Cover Art

It’s not subtle, but I missed it until the twist back when I originally watched season 1 of the anime.

This part seems really exciting from how everyone is spoilering it

They’re so well drawn! And at different angles and everything too. I’m never going to unsee the shoes.

Everything makes so much sense now.

I also can’t promise I won’t lose my self control and binge the rest of the volume.

Can someone post the last panel that we’re supposed to read? I never get the whole page thing because the online VS physical pages are off by a bit usually.
Oh, is it just until the end of the chapter?

:sparkles: priorities :sparkles:
I really love how detailed they are lol.

Spoilers

Woah :open_mouth: they’re much more creepy in the manga!! I would cry if I saw something like that irl. Poor Emma :sob:. And they somehow managed to overcome their natural bodily response and sneak away without being discovered on the spot.

I also loved how they later referred to the kids with 匹 instead of people~ it was such a clever use of a counter~

Lol, I hear you… it really matches the tropes well. I think the only reason why I didn’t think that was because of the anime poster having literal eating utensils :sob:. Low-key ruined the surprise for me.

I’m not sure I wanna know how the “deed” is actually done — surely Conny got to be excited and happy and never betrayed even in the end :sob: :sob:

Thank you for the transcriptions!

Spoilers for this week

Even if you know what’s coming, this is such a creepy chapter! I love the depictions of the demons, they are so vivid and scary.

I never quite figured out how the children managed to sneak away from under the truck!

I love the setup we reach by the end of the chapter. If anyone can escape it is these three geniuses! It’s just like a game of 鬼ごっこ…

Spoilers from this week

Having not read anything (or even studied) in almost 2 years and getting back into it, out-the-gate trying to parse out sentences about the strategies and dynamics of tag was a little frustrating  Now the poetic, ominuous call back is so chilling :face_with_peeking_eye:

Chapter 2 thread is up. We are reading chapters 2 & 3 over the next three weeks. So chapter 2 over weeks 4-5, and chapter 3 over weeks 5-6.
