Promised Neverland - Chapter 2 (Weeks 4-5) - Beginner Book Club

Welcome to Chapter 2 of 約束のネバーランド・The Promised Neverland!

We are reading chapter 2 in weeks 4-5 of the schedule, and chapter 3 over weeks 5-6 of the schedule. So aim to read two chapters over the next three weeks to stay with the schedule. I’ll put the chapter 3 thread up next week.

Discussion Guidelines

Summary

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Some interesting use of furigana in this one.

Oh. I thought that was meant to be the end of this week’s reading. I’ve gone and read the whole chapter. :stuck_out_tongue:

If I’ve got the page numbering right then that’s correct - page 86 should be the end of chapter 2. It was hard to get the page counts right for weeks 4-6 so people preferred we would do it this way.

So we have this single thread for chapter 2, to be on track with the schedule you should be aiming to finish the chapter by the middle of next week. You then have a week and a half to read chapter 3. If you are finished for the whole of chapter 2 already then you get a :star:.

Hopefully all makes sense!

This was mildly confusing (probably because I didn’t pay attention to the previous discussion about this?), I ended up reading the entire chapter. Heck, I’ll read the entire next chapter next week and enjoy a week off most likely.

I also read the whole chapter. I’m hooked now.

I wanted to make sure I was completely following things. Absolutely chilling.

From the perspective of learning kanji, I found this week a little frustrating because of the amount of words that have a different reading from the actual kanji :face_with_peeking_eye:. I was hoping that it’ll ease off a bit after the initial first chapter, but it didn’t… Just can’t really find joy in how many times this literary device was being used~

Like, it’s not hard to read or anything if you know the words… but it’s just reading furigana all the time so it’s a little different from my goal when I pick up native content

The story itself is obviously entertaining, though.

I actually like it! Because if you know the word being spelled with the kanji, you can appreciate the double meaning. I don’t know of any other language that can do this device so I find it really fun.

Oh yeah, I find it nice when it’s not too many. I just feel like here it’s a bit overused. Somewhere in the middle of chapter 2, there were like 5 or 6 words almost in a row across two pages that were used in this way. I think that for me, it’s because I’m reading to learn the kanji (since I don’t do SRS) that it’s a bit frustrating since I feel like I’m not really getting a learning effect.

That being said, I never found it particularly bothersome before in other manga (rather, like you said, it was interesting as a literary device), just the case with this one, I guess because of the frequent usage.

Again, it doesn’t take away from the plot of the manga for me, just from the learning opportunity because it makes me not check the kanji since I know the meaning of the intended word anyway (since it’s as if it were written in kana).

But that’s just me.

Chapter 3 thread is up. Aim to finish chapter 3 over the next two weeks to stay on schedule. You may also be finishing chapter 2 this week.
