Picture Book Challenge 2020!

Is it not possible to look at things twice? I was half way through and then I had to go somewhere :open_mouth:

For me it helped to close all ehon Navi windows. When you click on the “read for free” button you have two buttons. The orange one is to open the book in the special app, the white one is to download the app. Did you already download the app?

Same I will join but do it at my onwn speed.

AFAIK you can look at the sample more than once, but you can look at the complete book only once. I think there’s a 15-minute window to open it multiple times.

@Pep95 That’s right, you can only read each book once. You have around a 15 minute window to close and re-open the reader for a particular book as many times as you want, after that you can’t open it again.

On desktop at least, you can leave the reader window open though for as long as you want. So if you end up having to go somewhere during your reading, just leave the window open and come back to it. Not sure how it would work on mobile.

Yeah I closed it so there’s no way to read it now. And I don’t think Tofugu would be pleased if it were posted on here

I’m using ehonnavi on my desktop, so I only have the option to read.

I’m joining too, I need a goal. I might go at my own speed and aim for WAY less books though!

Are you still experiencing issues? If you post a screenshot of the error that you’re seeing, maybe I can help you debug! Also a step-by-step walkthrough of what you did to get to that error would be great too!

@NLeseul The export/import functionality is live! I’ve tested it in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and iOS Safari and it worked smoothly for me. LMK if you run into any issues though!

Also, to everyone else, I’ve started coming across read-alouds of the books on YouTube. I’m planning on organizing the videos into playlists by age group: null - YouTube

I’ll also add links to the app to the individual videos as I find them / have time to add them! Pretty nice that, at least for some books, we can re-experience the books by listening to Japanese speakers read them to us :D!

a. I am not recognizing words written in hiragana that I know in kanji.
b. How to handle the vocabulary I don’t know. I’m not interested in starting up Anki or some other SRS system for this…

Side note: I texted my SO ついてあいで because I just couldn’t figure it out based on the pictures. And here’s when you know it’s not you- he calls me and asked “there’s no kanji?” I sent him a screenshot of the book and then he was able to answer, but I found this so amusing…

I think the idea was just to read through the books without putting too much effort in what you don’t understand (I know, super frustrating ), just for the sake of being exposed to real Japanese (with increasing difficulty) on a daily basis. So no Anki deck, no looking up every word, just trying to figure out what’s happening with the images and the text you’re able to grasp.

Happy New Year !

Happy New Year to you as well, though the clock strikes here later than the rest of the world! :clinking_glasses:

I get the exposure aspect, but in the case of the book title above, looking at the pictures didn’t connect any dots for me, so there was no (personal) value there if I didn’t investigate the vocabulary. Also, I just read the しずかな story and the illustrations are beautiful, as is the language which I would have totally missed out on if I didn’t look up at least some of the words… whatever I could have deduced from the visual would have totally missed the details and the poetry.

All of which is to say, for me personally it’s not satisfying to just look at the Japanese and leave it at that.

It’s still early evening for me as well, so not quite yet the new year, but Happy New Year to you (and everyone as well)!

My recommendation overall is to just try to figure out meaning from context and the pictures as spending time looking up lots of words as I’m reading will definitely slow my pace down. That being said, I don’t think there’s any one right way to go about things. As I progress through the readings, I’ll probably have jisho.org open as well, so I can easily look up words as I want to. Though even if I do look up words, I probably won’t write them down, or create an Anki deck, or any of that.

Due to the sheer volume of content, I’m interested to see over time how much language is repeated. Even if I look up something multiple times, I think that’s fine, as maybe each time I do so I’m cementing it that much more into my brain.

Additionally, as I go, for words that I see often but haven’t looked up, I’m interested to see if eventually, by seeing them in different contexts / sentences, I’ll be able to divine their meaning. Ultimately I still might have to look these words up, but will be a fun experiment!

I look forward to hearing more about how everyone tackles the challenge :). Looking forward to officially getting started in the new year!!

In my real life I don’t have much time to do more than I am doing, and the thought of creating flashcards makes me shudder, so I was just thinking out loud.

I would say the method to my madness is to spend some time, while the books are relatively short and simple, building a structure. So that as the difficulty increases there will be something there and I will be able to figure out the meaning a bit better because I am assuming that the heavy use of pictures will decrease eventually?

Yes it’s not 2020 yet for me either, but I thought I might as well wish it already

That sounds like a good plan! I’m not sure if the heavy use of pictures will decrease, actually, but it’ll be fun to find out together :D. Once you have your structure ironed out, do share!!

Verified (finally)! Exported the JSON from Chrome on my work desktop, imported it from the Samsung browser on my phone, and it looks like everything made it across at a glance. Thank you!

If it helps anyone else, my workflow right now is going to be attaching the downloaded JSON to a note in Evernote, which I know I can get to from pretty much any device I care about. That way I can just update the attached file on that note any time I work on this somewhere.

You know, I wonder if Evernote or any similar site has a convenient API for storing text or files. That might be a convenient way of automating the export/import process a little more without having to set up your own account management. Not a big deal, though.

Hi, I’d love to join but the edit this wiki option doesn’t show up.

i guess i dont have the right level for editing yet but count me in on Joining anyway
