Using AI has been very helpful for me learning japanese. I’d like to find away to export my current known/learning kanji so I can put it in gpt to create a story or dialog. I’m sure there’s a way to do this easy, but I’m just missing it.

The Item Inspector script has an export function that could be used for this purpose.
Doesn’t use AI and it’s not stories, but this website gathers and randomizes all the wanikani context sentences according to your kanji knowledge, so you can study them quickly without worrying about unknown kanji. Just gotta give it an API token from the wanikani settings.

You can get it from wkstats. Go to https://www.wkstats.com/. You will need to enter your API key to login if you haven’t yet.
Top right → Items → WaniKani Items.
Under Open config, Group by → None.
Show/Hide → Item type: click on “Radicals” and “Vocabulary” buttons to disable them such that only Kanji button is enabled.
SRS stage: click on “Locked” and “Lesson” buttons so they are turned off. The remaining stages should be kept enabled. You should then be able to see/copy the list of your known kanji under “All items” at the bottom.

Does limiting GPT to a certain character set even works? I just tried asking chatgpt to write me a short story with only N5 kanji and it completely failed. Even listing the kanji explicitly didn’t work out.

yeah i tried that too, same result. However if you ask it for a list of n5 kanji, then say use kanji from that list to make a story, it works decent. Also you can ask it to double check and it will fix it.

I asked ChatGPT to “write me a short story, mainly using kanji that are taught up to level 30 in Wanikani” and was pretty happy with the result. It wasn’t perfect but the few words I didn’t know I saw as learning opportunities.

Here are my stories 
first from gemini and second from gpt, gpt was definitly easier to work with on it. I’d say half the kanji were from my list, so not too bad, it did make me relize I’d forgotten some.

I just used Wanikani Item Inspector + Gemini to do this. Here’s a video that shows step-by-step how I did it!
Here are the steps:
- Open WaniKani Item Inspector. Click the “All Learned Items” view. Click “Export Items Suitable for Word Clouds” then “Copy to Clipboard”.
- In Google Gemini (or ChatGPT), type in the following:
I am studying kanji using Wanikani. I want you to give me a story to read based on what I have learned so far. I understand all hiragana and katakana. Here are the items I have learned: <paste in the list from above>
- Bonus audio step: I copied the resulting story into Google Translate and then had it read the story to me. I covered up the translation; I just wanted the audio.
Here was the resulting story. It’s not a best-seller, but I was quite excited to be able to read it!:
五月五日 (May 5th)
五月五日です。 女の子が一人、ふじ山にいます。 女の子は白い犬といっしょです。 犬は小さいです。 犬の目は黒くて、丸いです。 ふじ山は大きいです。
犬は川に入ります。 女の子は、力いっぱい犬を上げます。 女の子は言います。「ダメ。」

English Translation
Title: The Genius Girl

Last evening, the two went to a hotel. The hotel’s entrance is small. There was an adult woman. The girl handed 1,000 yen to that person. “Please give me a book.” The girl loves books. Because the girl is a genius.
I don’t think 二人 is appropriate here since it’s a girl and a dog. And then buying books in a hotel?
More generally I remain skeptical that it’s worth pursuing this over using one of the million graded readers out there. Yes, they won’t have exactly the subset of kanji that you’ve been studying, but learning to identify and deal with unknown kanji is a very important skill when reading Japanese.

Those are good points! This was mostly an easy and fun way to motivate myself by seeing the kanji I had learned “in action” 
It’s a good idea for me to seek out graded readers that will work for me (and to learn how to deal with unknown kanji!). Thanks for your insights.
