hi everyone! i made something for myself that i figured i might polish up a bit and share with the community writ large. i’m a little over 6 months into my language-learning journey and am somewhere around a mid-N4 level - one thing that i find myself struggling with is finding native immersion material that is in a “sweet spot” where i understand enough to glean what i’m reading that isn’t too difficult or too easy.
so, i made a tool: https://www.crabigatoraid.com
What’s it do?
-
using your (free) WaniKani and Gemini API keys, it will peer into what you’ve learned on WaniKani in order to build short (3-4 sentence) stories
-
additionally, it has a tool for evaluating a sentence you write from a randomly selected word from your WaniKani API
-
more stuff i will add at some point as inspiration strikes (if there’s anything you’d like to see, let me know!)
How do I use it?
-
simple instructions are on the website, but first you’ll want to get your WaniKani API key from here, generate a free-tier Gemini API key from here, and link them up on the website
- (quick note: no API keys are being stored anywhere at any point on the backend; everything is contained within your browsers local storage only)
-
there are hard rate-limits for free Gemini keys: these numbers seem a bit “flexible” and i can’t get a good handle on them, but you can circumvent this with a paid API key. i myself haven’t hit the limit while testing, but if it becomes an issue i have an idea for a workaround
Some notes on AI
-
it’s AI. it’s inconsistent in its output. it’s wrong all the time. think of this as a “study buddy”, not an actual native Japanese tutor
-
always defer to actual native material on questions of native clarity or nuance
