Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

Obs! Do note that the physical version seems to come with zero page numbers (yes, zero, I saw none while flipping through a good portion of the first volume). So alternative means of identifying page might be needed.

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number (if you can), and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

This is more ramblings for the future, but I’m surprised by the pace of things so far. Like vol 1 had a Christmas party and already and in this part we have the cherry blossom/spring themed fest. Doesn’t that seem fast? Like that would imply that Honey and Mori are graduating soon wouldn’t it? Unless I’ve misunderstood and the Christmas party wasn’t at Christmastime nor this bit in spring…

The last panel in part 1 is in location 25 of the eBook, so I’m guessing the offset might be just 1? By the way, the “first” page (below) of the chapter is location 8:

location 8

(PS: I think there’s a small mistake with the table in your post - since the week number was not included, all the text is one column to the left compared to where it should be  )

Thanks! Both for the ebook offset and the table thing. The table thing was copy-paste problem that I didn’t notice. xD (I decided to stop counting weeks from volume 2 onward, but didn’t remember that when I made this chapter’s post!)

The first page of chapter 4 gives an explanation:

このまんがは 進級知らずで都合良くお送りします

I guess they will be third-graders forever.

Aw man, I read that line and totally glazed over it. Thanks!

I’ve always struggled with より〜ほう… use it in a harder/longer sentence, and I get a bit lost. I’m guessing that 俺たちの場合 means in our case (our=club members? Or is he just referring to himself despite using 俺たち?) + being admired, rather then admiring + 忙しい訳だが = because we are busy with this => (It’s because) In our case we are busy mostly being admired rather then admiring.
Is this interpretation/translation correct?

How are people feeling on pace? After this week, we have one more chapter of Ouran in one week, and then two weeks of an unrelated short story. In that way, we do have like a longer break if someone needs to catch up, because the unrelated story can always be read at another time.

I’ll probably set up polls for volume 3 soon. Remember to buy that volume very soon if you’re planing to get it in paper.

It’s a little on the fast side for me at the moment, but I think it’s still doable. As you said, we have the short stories coming up, so I’ll personally stick to the pace and try to compensate it then if needed.

Those weeks are also a bit shorter. 22 pages vs current 32ish pages. So that should hopefully help too.

I have a couple of questions.

Page 29 (chapter 4 - early part 2)

What is happening in the marked bubble? “学校っつっても” What is this? I have no idea how to break it down and even ichi.moe got confused. :joy:

I can’t put together what it is Tamaki says in his bubbles to the right. And by extension not entirely sure about the bubble to the left either.

It is 学校って言っても

He is comparing the twins with a (good-for-nothing) painkiller (バフOリン) used by common people.

自分達の思い通りにいかないとすぐコレでね When they don’t get their way, immediately this
できそこないの鎮痛剤の様なものさ It’s like a good-for-nothing painkiller.
バフOリンの半分はやさしさでできているが Half of the バフOリン is kindness.

I guess that means it is the ゆう reading of 言う? Because I don’t see how て + いって becomes つって but I guess て + ゆって would make sense to become つって. The twins… for real, sometimes they just completely stump me.

Thanks! (Also for page 54 help!)

A character in the book I am reading right now talks using a lot of っつ but I did not wonder about it till now  I found this. It seems to be a characteristic of the Tokyo dialect.
From one of the answers:

~と言って の「と」と「い」が縮まって、「つ あるいは とぅ」となっているのでしょう。というか、が、つうか になるのと同じでしょう。

Seems like this mangaka has a soft spot for mischievous twins, doesn’t she? :joy: I’m finding this chapter even more enjoyable than a typical Ouran chapter. I am happy that we decided to read it.
