We’re reading the unrelated story included in volume 2, well, the first half of it:
And now the second half and the rest of the volume:
After this is a one week break and then on to volume 3!
Volume 3 is here! This week we are reading chapter 8.
And now chapter 9!
Here is chapter 10.
We’re not having that many comments, are we? I’m very behind and not likely to catch up anytime soon.
After this volume, I won’t be able to continue the book club until after new years. I’d be happy to take it up again at that point (hopefully I’ll be ready). But if anyone else wants to take over running it and keep it going without a longer break, I’m totally cool with that.
Sorry, I’m quite behind too. I could take it over after you stop if you’d like, but I think anyone who’s more active than me and wants to should have priority. If no one steps up and people are still interested in having the club in general though, I’ll gladly take it off your hands.
I’d be completely fine with the club restarting after new year’s - while I enjoy the story and I’m relatively up to date now, I find it quite a heavy reading and I’m definitely in need of a break (I was already planning on a longer break after this volume to be honest). I’m also already a bit too busy with other book clubs (and hosting them), so I wouldn’t be able to take this one over.
Well, maybe I should have seen this coming, but it seems a poll is in order! It will be open until at least Tuesday next week, possibly until the end of next week because life.
- Break until after new year, MissDagger will likely stay as host
- Continue as we have been and let someone else take over (DIO-Berry or someone else if they step up)
- How about XYZ? Comment below with your suggestion!
Please vote for the option(s) you prefer. Honestly, I want what is best for the whole club. So don’t feel like you are voting me away from leader if you want the club to continue with its current pace, because you aren’t.
Maybe I should have made this an anonymous poll, but multiple choice and anonymous don’t work well together, in my opinion, and I’m still running this so live with it?
Honestly, when we first started reading this manga, it felt like repeatedly hitting my little toe against the corner of a piece of furniture. Now, I find pleasure in reading it, but deciphering the handwritten text requires a lot of effort. On the bright side, there are some truly unique expressions used there, making the effort worthwhile.
I’m fine with whether we take a longer break or not. In fact, a longer break might be good for me as well. I have a bunch of series that I want to give a shot.
New week. Because I don’t have laptop/desktop until after the weekend I will do all the links in OP here and the volume 3 thread when I get that again.
Chapter 12 this week:
Next week will be the last chapter of the volume, one of those unnumbered ones.
Also, according to the poll, people are happy to have a break for this club until the start of next year. So after next week, we will have an extended break of roughly 2 months.
If you’ve caught some my personal reasons for wanting a longer break (with leading clubs) then I’m happy to report that I feel less burnt out with it, and I look forward to having a break (to fully get the burnout gone), and hopefully I can catch up with the club in that time.
お疲れ様です! Let’s have a good relaxing break
And the last chapter/section of volume 3 is here:
This coming week I’ll look at volume 4 and come back with a proposed schedule, I’m assuming we want to continue on pretty much the same schedule we have been, but I’ll make a poll at the time when we know chapter lengths and such things.
But remember, volume 4 won’t start until the start of 2024, I’ll come back with a suggested date with the post on the schedule.
ToC for volume 4:
- Chapter 13 - 3-34, 32 pages
- Chapter 14 - 35-65, 31 pages
- Chapter 15 - 68-101, 34 pages
- Chapter 16 - 103-133, 31 pages
**seems to be a short something with the Ouran characters, but not as high school students and not canon—from looking up はみだし and also flipping through the pages
Well, considering we read ロマンティック・エゴイスト as part of the schedule for volume 2, it would make sense to read the sequel, ラブ・エゴイスト, in volume 4.
Considering the chapters are basically the same length as last volume, I assume people would be fine with continuing at the pace we have been?
- 1 chapter per week
- Slower than 1ch/week
- Faster than 1ch/week
The more important question for the schedule is whether to split ラブ・エゴイスト in two or not.
a) If splitting, the best option would be to lump in the はみだしマンが and the egoist club together with that, and split the resulting 52 pages in two. (26 pages per week.)
b) If not splitting, a short week of 12 pages for the はみだしマンが and the egoist club would follow. (40 page week followed by 12 page week.)
- Yes (a)
- No (b)
My suggested start date is Jan 6th. By then anyone celebrating the holidays at the end of December should have had time to get settled back in. If they like doing new year resolutions, they would have had a chance to get a solid start on them. If anyone have another date they would much more prefer, please comment below.
I’ll make the mock up schedule earliest in 7 days when I’ll close the polls above.
Volume 4 schedule done! I think I found a slightly better break so the page divide for the last two weeks becomes 24 + 28, rather than a straight 26 + 26.
Let me know if you spot any mistakes or if you think I should change anything.

Much love , if nothing comes up, I’ll see you all at the start of next year!
@ChristopherFritz @DIO-Berry @snowwater I’m moving the discussion of difficulty over here.
Consider there are several of us having that difficulty. I was wondering if there was something we could do to alleviate it?
Would something like a read aloud session help? (I’m not entirely sure how those have worked in the past, but we can always customize it to our needs.) Could we drill down and figure out what is so difficult and then put together some resources to maybe help with that? (Like Tamaki’s speeches.)
Just throwing out suggestions here. I thought it might be worth discussing, since we’re all interested in actually reading it, but finding it hard. And I’m not entirely sure what it is exactly.
For me at least, it isn’t always hard grammar or unknown vocabulary, I guess I’m just having trouble finding the feel of the text, if that makes sense. Like there is an ingredient I’m missing to make some of it fall into place and it just being unknown vocab/grammar.
I feel something similar. I cannot put my finger on what it is, but I have a hard time getting into this ‘feel’ of the text and I always end up feeling blocked when I encounter unknown vocab/grammar, even though with some other books I might be able to easily ignore it and move on with the story.
But, to be honest, it’s also been really busy in life for me. To the point I’m just overwhelmed by things. And book clubs, of course, keep continuing, and some really interesting ones that grab my attention keep popping up. So it just becomes a matter of having too much in my hands and choosing what I like the most, which unfortunately just isn’t Ouran at the moment.
For me, I think the biggest thing is the vocabulary.
Consider the following stats.
If I encounter a word I don’t know, and I do a search for its appearances in manga I’ve read, and I get zero results outside of Ouran, it’s difficult for me to learn the vocabulary.
tbf, the wording and content is intentionally awkward. Like it was such a relief to talk to a Japanese friend and get confirmed that it is just a bit of a weird manga that can be difficult or awkward for native speakers too.
