Ouran High School Host Club 🌸 Book Club // Starting Volume 4 on Feb 3rd, 2024 (桜蘭高校ホスト部)

I think they might be easy enough for native speakers who like reading. I love my midwest cousins, but I think they’d struggle.

Oh, so it isn’t that we are learners of Japanese that means it is hard to get a feel/flow, but actually that it is intentionally written a bit awkward.

That does make me feel a bit better. It doesn’t directly help with reading Ouran, but now I know that some things are actually a bit awkward in Japanese, so it will be easier to move on when I’m having trouble.

i read ahead a bit and in case people don’t want to get blindsided (like i was), the love egoist story in volume 4 features teacher/student romance. thought i’d mention it if people wanted to skip it

So… I haven’t read a page of Ouran in more than a month, and there is no way I’m reading volume 2 and 3 before Saturday. So I’m currently completely bankrupt when it comes to this club.

I know @nyxqueenofshadows is ahead of the club and staying there. Go you!

And at least one more member is reading about one volume behind.

So…

What should we do?
  • Hiatus/break for a while longer? (Suggest a time frame!)
  • Pause/Hiatus the club indefinitely
  • Continue as planned

Just as an FYI, if the club decides to continue as planned, someone else will need to take over the leading. If we continue the break for a short while and I’m still not caught up and ready to read with the club when it is starting up again, someone else will need to take over leading.

I’m rather sad about it, but right now, I don’t have the room to follow along with a book club. Reading is low on my list of priority :frowning:, so much else have leapfrogged it. So I can’t commit to any clubs right now or in the near future. (No idea if/when that will change.)

I’m sorry to hear that. I was hoping the break would provide some relief, and we could resume reading with everyone on board.
I want to continue as planned but if you believe the extension of the break will help you catch up I can wait 1-2 weeks more.

1-2 weeks is definitely not going to cut it for me. To read 2 volumes of Ouran in that time would be a very big commitment, and as I mentioned reading is not something I can commit much time for and even less energy for. So reading something hard like Ouran is not even on my radar right now. So unfortunately, it is true that I have no idea when I’ll get back to Ouran. Could be later this year, could be next. As my plans for the year is shaping up, I really wouldn’t be surprised if the next time I get back to it is 2025… :sob:

So I wanted to know where the whole club is at. I believe @DIO-Berry previous offered to take it over. Not sure if that is still true. But I’m sure if there are enough people interested in continuing to read right now, someone to lead can be found.

I’m not planning to continue reading in the near future (read only half-way through volume 3 and lost gas as well) - there are just many other book clubs and stories that are higher in my priority list, and with limited time, I won’t be able to give Ouran any attention at least in the next few months (if I were to continue, it would perhaps be in half a year or so)… therefore I also support an indefinite hiatus. But others may want to continue with the club, of course.

I feel seen =D

In my experience, both regarding my own habits and seeing those of others, I find that the further behind someone is, the less likely they’ll make any progress during a break period. (This doesn’t apply to every, of course.)

That said, my current plan is to get in one chapter every Saturday (beginning volume 3 this upcoming weekend).

I’ve only read the first chapter of vol 3, so I’d be happy to take a longer break. Maybe after another month? I’m much busier than when I offered to take over the club. While I can take over in the future, I’d also prefer a hiatus. I’m only confident in running the JoJo club atm because I’ve read it before and I know the beginning of the anime super well at this point.

I’m not sure the poll gave us much of an answer. It seems people are slightly more in favor of making the break longer. But some wouldn’t mind it continuing now.

So is anyone currently willing to take over the club and keep running it now? Because just let me know and we’ll make the first post a wiki and you can take over and start it on Saturday or even delay by a couple of weeks or whatever.

Or we can reconvene in say two months and check in then? Could also reconvene sooner. But most that were in favor of delaying seemed to lean longer rather than shorter.

I guess in a way I’m saying: Unless someone is willing to take it over right now/soon, I’ll come back and check interest with you all (and myself!) in two months. (Unless we have a strong preference for only one month longer.)

I can take over the club. However, I must confess, I’m a complete beginner when it comes to forum stuff. Point out my mistakes, please.
It is hard to decide whether we should start the 4th volume right away or one or two months later. Which will be the best course of action?

Well, a poll never goes wrong if you’re trying to decide things. And when that isn’t a good option or has an unclear answer you decide for yourself, trying to take into account as many of the people of the club as possible. Do know that whatever option wins (or you pick), you can never please everyone 100%. But we all sign up for that, so it is no problem. (Except something I had to get okay with in my mind. )

@Mods Could someone please make the first post a wiki? Thank you!

After checking the poll results and reading the comments I have decided to extend the break one more month. Otherwise, I would be reading alone  I edited the contents accordingly but could not change the title.
I hope people manage to catch up so we can dive back into reading. If not, it looks like we might be extending for another month.

Fixed the title for you. Normally you need a regular or mod, or as in this case, the post owner, aka me. I still care about the club and will help where I can.

I have created the thread for Volume 4, which is planned to start reading on Feb 3rd. But first, Poll-Time!

Are you ready for the next volume?

  • Yes, bring it on!
  • No, I need more time to catch up.

@heikimi Saw you got volume 4 ready for launch. And fixed the link in volume 3 so it leads to volume 4.
